Chapter 80: The Announcements

[You have 13 days left to live]

A knife was between my eyes. Verbal, metaphorical knife, but it threatened to pierce through my skin and mush up my brain just the same as a real one.

"Fuck you mean?"

[Your lifespan was mostly used up in the teleportation spell, remember? Right now, your body is extending through mana. You can live longer than 13 maybe, but that is the range]

It had been a good few months since the day I met a grimoire while cleaning up the library in the Grim Palace, the house of the most solitary being in the world, the Queen of Witches.

And now, my old friend the Grimoire was looking at me straight in the eye and saying bull crap of the highest order.

"So... what is keeping me alive?"

[Mana that you have absorbed. It is fusing with your soul now, since it needs to live.]

"You mean I am turning into a being that can sense mana?"

[Not quite. Your body is still the same, you are just a container. But your soul is changing as well. It means, well, you’re becoming less human?]

"Hell does that mean?"

[As a species from the ethereal realm, you are changing.]

"I am not from there though. I am from my mother."

[That- That’s not what I meant...]

The Grimoire sure was stupid.

"Okay, so from what I am understanding, for living I need sustenance, and this sustenance for my soul, that has been cut into so many bits because of your stupid ass weak ass wacky ass spell, is mana?"

[That’s not what I said at all, but it’s exactly what I mean!]

Woah! Self aware, I liked that.

Rare for the Grimoire.

"So how do I live longer?"

[Isn’t it obvious?]

"Is it?"

[Sex.]

"It is obvious..."

Obvious that I am going to burn this shit. I tied the Grimoire in my bedsheet first and pulled out a metal rod. I swung it up high and slammed it down on the cloth. It started to fly around to dodge. Flutter and explain itself? Nuh-uh, I can’t see your words while you’re hidden in the cloth, bitch!

The two of us played around like that for a while. Tired, finally, I sat down. The Grimoire crawled out from underneath the sheets and finally turned to me.

It opened the pages.

[Everything you do will increase your life span a little, but you’ll need to keep doing it to live a normal life.]

"Got it man..."

I rested my hands on my knees and looked to my side.

A thief of hearts. Was that my fate? From Phantom to Playboy? From the ghost to a bunny?

Damn it.

***

The issue of my life, which I could definitely extend by a day or two here and there.

I didn’t have to worry that much about action. I was never on the path to wizardry anyway.

When I went downstairs, a strange but familiar face was here to greet me.

"Gnome boy? What are you doing here?"

"..."

"You want to talk to me and Miss Witch?"

In a turn of events that was most natural for everyone living in Serenia, the Gnome Golem had somehow become the mayor of the City of Serenia.

"..."

"You want to show us something?"

I guess we could. Downstairs, playing with her black cat as she sat listlessly on the porch of the house, was Weiss.

"Weiss, Weiss."

"What? What?"

"The Gnome wants to show us something."

Like a cat, her ears perked up as well. She rolled on the floor and stood right up.

What could I say... our Miss Witch was currently in a strange dilemma. Not once in the history of her post was the Witch Queen recorded to have brought a whole city near the Grim Palace.

At the same time, she couldn’t leave the whole city of Serenia, that would have been destroyed by a weapon unlike anything else in the world, alone.

She was in equal parts proud of herself and doubting herself for having fucked up the very legacy she was entrusted with.

My advice to her was simple.

"There is no god without worshippers."

It was true. She should believe that.

She kept saying I am not their god just someone nearby, but they were clearly under the Witch Queen’s protection now.

"Let’s go," she said. "It’s good to be busy."

And so we went out. The Gnome in the front, Jake and John accompanying us as well, we left the two beastkin kids back there and came to the city.

There was no path yet, the city was just half an hour’s walk from the Grim Palace. The people were still adjusting to the place.

One of the first things they decided was to not build walls. Once they were fallen, Serenia as a location had already changed. Over here, there was little need for walls.

Development certainly was taking place. As soon as we reached, we saw the old lord of the city along with all the guards.

"Miss Witch! Mister Phantom!"

Lord Soren came rushing over to us. He had a straw hat on top of head and was holding a pickaxe. Not too far behind him were the officials of the city.

"Thank god you came!" he said. "There is a big problem!"

A big problem? What could it be.

All of them were huddled and talking in hushed voices, unsure of what to do. When the old Lord took us from near the officials to further ahead, their faces eased a little.

"Oh, Miss Witch is here."

"Thank god..."

"Now nothing will happen."

The Lord took us to the far end of the city.

"It’s right here," he said. From a cliff, the edge of where Serenia had teleported, we peered down.

It was a short drop, and a few houses had fallen from the sky to down there as soon as the teleportation happened. There, underneath, a bunch of trees were standing.

On the ground was a message.

{Humans not Welcome. Get out}

Hey... what the fuck?
