Chapter 79: A New Era (End of Volume 1)
I awoke back in my room in the Grim Palace.
There wasn’t anybody around. The ceiling was still open. I could move, finally.
Slowly, getting off the bed, I looked around. A glass was kept on the table, along with flowers. My body felt clean too, and my clothes were much different.
A book was at the edge of the bed, near my feet. Not the Grimoire, but a different book.
"Hmmm..." A sigh left me.
The last thing I remembered was the teleportation spell, and then the conversation with the Grimoire. The fact that I was back here, back home...
It felt really good. A strong sense of calm spread in my chest. That was great. Everything ended properly, did it not? All issues, solved.
"Should I make breakfast?"
I started to change and leave the room, the door opened at that very moment.
"This is not a joke anymore butler, get up—"
Absently, she walked in.
My dear miss Witch. She froze as she met my eyes, and I froze as well. Largely because I was changing my shirt.
"What’s up," I said.
Weiss smirked. "You’re up. Joint?"
"Pfft. Is that something you ask a sick person?"
"Why not. Who gives a fuck?"
I shrugged. Fair enough. We both sat back down on the bed, and she pulled out my emergency stash. Wait, how did she know? How long has she been eyeing my weed? Will I have to hide it somewhere else?
Weiss started rolling, not letting me do it.
"You were out cold for four days, you know?"
"Four days...? That’s not a lot."
"It is a lot. The whole city of Serenia shifted to our backyard in that time."
"For real?"
"I mean, there’s a good bit of distance. I told anyone who came too close that I’d uproot the city myself. They all were pretty scared when they realized they were at the mercy of the Witch Queen now."
"So it’s out."
I expected no less. The whole city had been teleported here. We would have to explain, and of course, terrorize the people. That’s okay too.
She looked to be smiling.
She was smiling.
"I never thought we’ll end up this way, Butler."
The joint was rolled. She lit it herself, took a puff, and passed it over.
As the high started to seep through my veins, she rolled one more and gestured at me to follow along.
"Let’s go, see the place."
"For sure. I mean, I have been sleeping for four days and my body is really tired."
"Fuck that."
Fuck that indeed. I was a thief, this much was normal. Of course it was.
"Do you want to eat something first?"
"Eh, we’ll see."
"We’ll eat something in the city."
And so it went. Weiss and I took off to the city of Serenia. Things were quite strange here, this time.
As we went by, she told me about what happened. People panicked first, then they rallied around Adam and the others.
Once they learned what was going on, and that they were in the forest behind the Grim Palace, they became scared. So Weiss took to the air again and threatened them all.
I’ll let you live here, as long as you do not interfere with me anymore.
They were all scared and understood it. Clearly, a super cool sight that I missed.
We reached the city soon. The walls had fully fallen down, with only some bits of it still standing merged into the trunks and spines of trees. It looked more like a modern art installation than walls for a city.
People were out and about. Most houses had been destroyed, all of them ’superimposed’ on the trees. By all means, we had escaped easy.
"Lady Weiss!"
"Our Queen!"
"The Queen is here!"
Immediately, as soon as people saw her, they broke into wide smiles. Some bowed and others rushed over.
"The butler is here as well!"
"Woah! Butler Axel saved us too..."
Butler.
Butler these motherfuckers too.
While I was pissed about that, I turned to see Weiss first.
"Scared?"
"They’re terrified."
Someone teach this shut-in how people work. They were anything but scared.
A child rushed over and brought a bowl of something.
"M-miss Queen! Mother sent this."
Weiss gently leaned down and took the bowl from the child, then patted his head.
"See, they even rush to bring in offerings."
It was a bowl of stew. All of them, aware that they were all on the ground and now together, were bringing her food because they genuinely thought she was as hungry as everyone else.
I could even hear the whispers.
"How has she been living here for so long..."
"All alone. And now taking care of us as well..."
"We have all been left out."
I gulped, and looked at her.
Weiss picked up a spoonful of the stew and ate it, then offered me a bite.
We took a walk around. The whole place. People were building things back. New types of ideas, mostly just enough to live for now.
Only two-thirds of the city had come along with me. As far the mercury stretched. A large part of the Blue Danube, and the roads through the Ring Road were all gone. Surprisingly, even the Lord’s Castle had a third of it missing.
Adam and Arlene had gone back to the city, along with the Reinvelt Knights. To show that they were alive, and to continue what was next.
That was, before Weiss dropped the biggest bomb on me.
"Apparently, the Emperor died the same night they attacked Serenia."
My eyes widened.
"The Crown Prince will now become the Emperor."
"Say, Weiss."
I could tell what she was thinking.
The legacy of the Queen of Witches. Lilith? That was just a person.
It was this title that held all the power.
"What is it, Phantom?"
"Do you..."
People, abandoned by the world.
Abandoned like her. Abandoned like I.
This entire city had been left for the dead. For what? For nothing other than the fact that it profited the ones in power.
Was such a life what people wanted?
"My mother used to say... don’t cry about how unfair the world is, so I always tried to do things."
Weiss met my eyes.
"But she also said, when you can, change it."
A land.
A place to belong.
For all of us left behind by the world.
"Do you wish to bring that change?"
Weiss smiled.
"Yeah," she said. "I want to change the world for people like us. For all of us abandoned... I will carve out our own space."
The land of the Witch Queen.
The legacy.
Was to be born.
