Chapter 78: A New Era (3)
In the forest behind the Grim Palace. An Ent was happily stuck to the ground. It looked at the spot below frequently.
A mango tree would grow here soon. He would make that an Ent as well. The Ent had started to look at things differently these days. Many things would happen in life, instead of complaining about it or counting his misfortune, wasn’t it best to just look at the good in everything?
It closed its eyes and could see them again.
Those two evil faces had scared him most, but.
"Even if the entire forest was to be cut down and turn into a city tomorrow... I shall not be sad."
That, was peace.
That was escaping dukkha by breaking the cycle of rebirth, of want and desire. The Ent was proud of himself.
He opened his eyes again.
"Did it work...?"
The Ent’s eyes widened. Where the mango seed was planted now stood the scary face he had just imagined.
Phantom! The Ent turned to the sky.
"I-it can’t be...!" The ent was the first voice to break the silence of the place.
There stood the Witch from that day... and all around him. The forest! The forest had turned into a city.
"hahaah! This is a jest! Gods are jesting with me."
Near the West stretched a giant wall, and down East was a bigger city yet. He could see in the distance a castle as well.
The forest! So much of the forest.
It had all become a city.
"Noooooo!"
***
Elita was hanging the clothes from the orphanage, standing outside.
Walls painted, borders built, the whole orphanage in Kroma village had transformed.
A strong gust was blowing, she hoped these clothes would be dry by morning. She turned around.
A mushroom cloud entered her vision. Far, far away.
Then.
A shockwave.
A buzzing sound like the scratching of nails on a blackboard shook her body and ears. She couldn’t even move her eyes.
The border walls, and everything beyond. Large forests, mountains and passes, and beyond the city of Serenia.
A giant chasm replaced it all.
Her feet trembled, as she walked closer.
The world... had been carved out.
***
Wilthorn finally woke up after many hits to his head.
"Damn it! Where did you go!? Hiding bastard—"
The General rushed out from the tent, and was greeted by a flash of bright blue light. Extremely bright. His vision went away first, then his breath.
His lungs melted away from the sheer energy, and in almost no time, from the front of his body he was swallowed by the light.
Delete.
His existence was deleted.
And so were the lives of all the other soldiers unlucky enough to enter this war with Serenia.
Everything was gone. Everyone, was dead.
***
I fell to the ground, exhausted. For some reason every bit of energy in my body was gone.
People looked around, and their gazes focused in the very distance. Tilted sideways, a large pillar of blue light flashed, then disappeared.
We were very, very far from the city. That was all I could hope.
The book fell in front of my eyes as well.
[Good job. You used your life force to make up for the rest of mana]
"Fuck... does that mean?"
I could only move my mouth and let out a feeble voice. It felt horrible, as if I was paralyzed. Even though my mind was sharp, which it always was, it didn’t translate to this groggy mortal vessel whatsoever.
[It means you killed a lot of yourself.]
"Where...?"
[Oh. We needed a location tracker to make sure we teleport. Actually, if you just try to teleport to any random place, you would end up in the middle of the Universe drifting away from the planet.]
What? What was with that?
[It’s all Lilith’s knowledge.]
"So what did you use?"
"OH NO!!! My Forestttt! My beautiful trees, look! They are mauled and merged with those houses? What have you done! Thy beast! Thy wench!"
I looked to my side.
It was a familiar Ent. The one we had bullied into working around for us.
[There was a mango seed.]
A bigger chuckle left me.
So the Grimoire had turned the mango seed into a marker? And everything from there reconstructed over here? Seriously? That was what the magic spell was about?
How insane was that.
Everything around me was still the same. The walls, though not fully constructed and were crumbling, had also come here.
From the skies, Weiss started to descend and fall as well.
My body wouldn’t move, or I would go there to catch her.
Nothing was moving.
She didn’t need me there, this time, she landed on her feet and ran over to me.
"What happened...?" Someone said.
Children cried, and parents hugged them. Weiss stumbled and fell. The Brats were coming here too, Treska and Delka, Treska heavily injured.
Arlene and Nea also rushed toward me.
The butterflies had started to flow into dust, turn away. A loud rumble resounded as the city walls, only from the sides where people still stood, started to fall without the rest of its support.
Many buildings had merged with the trees around, and the ground had uprooted.
From the distance, the one leading this war raised his sword up high and yelled into the air, into the people, into their bones and into the fears gripping their souls.
"We’re saved!"
Adam’s voice reached my ears.
"We... Serenia has been saved from that weapon! The war for Serenia is over!"
Where was he? I couldn’t even look around anymore.
"The city is safe!!"
Everything was weak. My muscles spasmed. As if I was made of lead, heavy. The blood flowing in my body felt like stones.
This was magic? Fucking hell...
[Congratulations, Phantom. You have saved the ones you wanted to save]
"Seriously... what in the world are you?"
[I thought I told you on the first day itself.]
[I am Lilith’s Grimoire]
I finally collapsed.
