Chapter 134: Sad Story

"I know it’s bad, but that doesn’t stop me from eating it. At worst, I’ll eat something else to neutralize these junk foods, right?"

The way Catherine said it was self-righteous, but what it translated to in plain language was: She had a craving.

"Just say you have a craving. You eat so much and still waste it. Everyone else who eats fried chicken and cola turns into a pig, yet you’re still flat as an airport runway."

"Ah!!!"

Just as Catherine was about to explode in anger, Andrew pointed to Scarlett’s bedroom, "Professor Scarlett is unhappy, don’t you dare shout."

"You!!!" Catherine was so angry she almost saw stars, and left immediately.

"I can’t be bothered with you. You figure out how to comfort Professor Scarlett yourself."

Catherine huffed off to wash the dishes. After tidying up the kitchen, she went back to her own room.

After washing up, Andrew quietly walked past Scarlett’s bedroom door. She was still quietly looking down at her phone, exactly the same as half an hour ago.

He quietly walked over. Scarlett still didn’t react at all, completely unaware.

It wasn’t until Andrew quietly sat down beside her and spoke softly, "Scar, what’s wrong? You seem a little unhappy."

At this moment, Scarlett snapped back to reality, looked up at Andrew, and then looked down again.

"It’s nothing, I was just looking at old photos."

The photo on Scarlett’s phone was a very old group photo, and it was a record taken by photographing a physical picture with a phone, so it was a bit blurry.

In the photo, a young Scarlett was leaning against a woman, smiling very happily.

The woman was very beautiful; in terms of looks, she was in no way inferior to Scarlett.

"Scar, is this your mother?" Andrew asked softly.

"Mm.".Scarlett nodded.

Andrew wanted to ask more, but felt it was inappropriate. He opened his mouth, but ultimately drew back.

However, Scarlett took the initiative to continue speaking, "My mother is gone. She passed away nine years ago."

This piece of information startled Andrew.

He had guessed many possibilities, Professor Scarlett’s parents might have divorced due to family conflicts, or perhaps they had both moved abroad, but he never expected this outcome.

Andrew thought about saying something to comfort her, but felt that anything he said would be inappropriate.

He gently reached out and pulled Scarlett close, choosing to comfort her only by listening silently.

At this moment, Scarlett was like a little girl, lying quietly on Andrew’s shoulder, seeking spiritual refuge.

The room was silent, extremely peaceful.

After a moment of silence, she opened her eyes and said slowly, "Starly called me this evening. She said she was very tired and missed her mother too. I comforted her to cheer up and not put too much pressure on herself, but as we talked, we started reminiscing about our past lives."

"Starly and I are about the same age. When we were little, my mother treated Starly like her own daughter. Those were the happiest times; Starly and I would play all day, just like you and your sister."

As Scarlett spoke, a smile couldn’t help but spread across her lips.

Andrew also laughed, "Hey, a family is happiest and most interesting when they have lots of fun together."

"Mm." Scarlett responded with a smile, agreeing with Andrew’s point.

Then, she gradually let the smile fade from her face and continued in a low voice, "But later, the family company ran into trouble. Father and Mother were often too busy to even come home, so Starly and I were sent to live at Grandma’s house."

"At that time, I often wouldn’t see my mother for a long time. Every time I did, I felt like she had aged a bit. Back then, my mother always lied to me, saying she would come spend time with me once she was done being busy, and she wouldn’t be busy anymore."

As she spoke, Scarlett pursed her lips, and her breathing became a little ragged.

Seeing this, Andrew held Scarlett tighter, gently stroking her to comfort her while listening in silence.

After a long while, Scarlett spoke again. Her voice was much more muffled, but she wasn’t crying; she maintained her composure.

"But that period of being busy lasted for three whole years. In those three years, my mother transformed from a woman as beautiful as a celestial being into a matron whose wrinkles needed makeup to be hidden. Her jet-black hair became thin, and she couldn’t even tie a ponytail anymore."

"I only found out later that during those three years, Mother traveled all over the country, even abroad, trying to secure investments to pull the company through the crisis."

Reaching this point, Scarlett took a deep breath, seemingly doing her utmost to control her emotions, "I thought my mother could finally rest after being so busy, but when I came out of school and saw her again, she was already lying on a hospital bed, completely emaciated from suffering from cancer, her voice incredibly weak even when speaking."

"Every time I saw my mother then, I would burst into tears, but Mother always comforted me not to cry, telling me she would get better. Yet, her health deteriorated continuously, and no matter how good the hospital was, nothing could change it."

"Until the very end, my mother still smiled and comforted me, telling me not to be too sad."

After finishing, Scarlett slowly sat up from Andrew’s embrace, "I’m sorry, talking about unhappy things has made you feel down too."

"It’s alright."

Andrew had expected Scarlett to be crying and had intended to wipe away her tears, but to his surprise, she wasn’t crying, only her eyes were red-rimmed.

She took a deep breath, "Now that I’m with you, there’s no need to hide these things anymore."

"Scar, is the reason you never go home also because of this matter?"

Andrew didn’t finish his sentence, but he could sense that Scarlett held considerable resentment toward her father.

Scarlett shook her head, "It’s just that. I don’t hate my father. After my mother passed away, my father never smiled again."

The next moment, Scarlett’s tone was firm, laced with anger, "But what I hate him for is that he brought that woman named Cathy home the very next year!"

Scarlett clenched her fists tightly. Both her actions and her tone revealed her fury, "I know my father remarried for the sake of the family business’s development, but he could have married anyone else, just not that woman! As long as that woman is his wife for one day, I will never forgive him!"

"Mm."

Andrew nodded. He would always stand by Professor Scarlett’s side.

After venting, Scarlett felt much better. She reached out and tidied her messy hair.

"I’m going to wash up and get ready for bed."

Scarlett was a bit tired and didn’t want to take a full bath.

"Scar, sit here. I’ll help you wash up."

Andrew finished speaking and left the room to prepare hot water for Scarlett to freshen up. She didn’t even have time to refuse.

She hesitated for a moment, just about to get up and tell Andrew she could manage her own washing, when Andrew returned with the hot water, already having wrung out a hot towel for her.

"Scar, shall I wash your face for you?"

Scarlett had originally intended to take the towel herself, but she thought letting Andrew do it might be a bit more amusing.

The atmosphere had become somewhat heavy after all that talking; this was a good chance to lighten the mood.

"You wash for me." Scarlett said, stretching her neck slightly, closing her eyes, and leaning her face a little closer to Andrew.

Andrew held the hot towel, feeling a bit expectant. He carefully extended his hand and began to wipe Scarlett’s face seriously.

But the moment he placed the towel on Scarlett’s face, she nearly suffocated from how Andrew was doing it.

She quickly snatched the towel back and pushed Andrew’s hand away.

"Who wipes a face like that?" Scarlett was both annoyed and amused. Andrew’s action of wiping her face was like scrubbing a table, it wasn’t exactly rough, but it certainly wasn’t gentle.

"Hee hee, it’s my first time washing someone’s face, I’m not used to it," Andrew said with a grin.

Scarlett suppressed a smile and pursed her lips, handing the towel back to Andrew, then extended her small foot, "Wash my feet."

If wiping a face was awkward for Andrew, washing feet was something he was skilled at.

"Be honest, did you offer to help me wash up because you wanted to rub my feet again?" Scarlett asked, sitting on the edge of the bed and looking down at Andrew.

"Heh heh, helping you wash your feet and rubbing your feet aren’t mutually exclusive, Scar."

"Little Pervert,"

Scarlett huffed out, wiggling her toes slightly and hooking them around Andrew’s hand.

After freshening up, Scarlett asked Andrew, "Do you want to sleep with me tonight again?

Andrew immediately agreed, "I want to! Of course, I want to!"
