Chapter 135: Koala Scar

As the days passed, their lives continued much the same as usual.

After finding partner stores, Andrew spent a few more days running around to various departments to apply for operating licenses.

Before, he was just running ads and only needed a company name to hide behind, but now that he was doing this group-buying delivery model, he had to have other licenses.

Andrew encountered quite a bit of trouble during the process; after applying for an operating license, he was told to come back in half a month to pick it up.

Time was already tight for him; if it were delayed for another half month, that would be disastrous.

With no other choice, Andrew had to turn to his old man for help again.

Sure enough, the operating license was finished the next day. Someone from the department even delivered it in person, which made Andrew feel a bit embarrassed.

"Just how powerful is that old geezer to be this formidable? Then why is he as timid as a dog at home?"

Andrew became even more curious about what exactly his old man did for a living.

But the man simply wouldn’t say, and there was nothing Andrew could do about it.

Once everything was ready, the software went online, and with the promotion of advertisements and discounts, the results were excellent.

Who wouldn’t take advantage of a freebie?

The strategy was simple: Andrew used 30,000 dollar to provide catering subsidies in the form of red envelopes. As long as it was a group purchase of four or more people, the red envelopes could be used to deduct a large portion of the price.

Then, he would slowly reduce the deduction amount of the red envelopes until he turned a profit.

Andrew continued this process for nearly a month. By December, he had reduced the red envelope deduction amount to a profitable level. Although he lost quite a few user orders compared to the beginning, he at least had a relatively respectable revenue.

"Wow! Boss, this move of yours is really ruthless! Even if only one-fifth of the order volume remains, it’s still quite impressive."

Hannah couldn’t help but feel admiration as she looked at the now-stabilized number of user orders.

A month ago, when Andrew told her to spend all 30,000 dollar on subsidies to attract users, Hannah almost thought he had gone mad.

At that time, she even tried to persuade Andrew, telling him that this would only attract ’freebie hunters’ and that he shouldn’t do it because it would only lead to losses.

But to her absolute surprise, even though four-fifths of the users left, a significant number still remained.

"Don’t doubt my ideas; this was all carefully considered by this old master. There are always only a few people who hunt for freebies. After they’re done hunting, they’ll either go to the offline cafeteria to eat or order takeout. Then, after comparing, they’ll see that group buying with us is a dollar or two cheaper than ordering individually on other platforms, so they’ll choose us."

Seeing Andrew’s smug look, Hannah gave him a disdainful side-eye, "Just a gambler, that’s all."

"Oh ho! Is that any way to talk to your boss?"

"By the way, Boss, it’s only a dollar or two cheaper. How can you be so sure people will use ours? Nowadays, you can’t even buy a bottle of mineral water for one dollar. Besides, other platforms are so big, they have way more variety than we do."

Hannah couldn’t quite understand this point. If she were ordering, she would definitely still choose the yellow-colored food delivery platform she had always used.

Hearing this, Andrew waved his hand smugly, "Let me give you an example. Suppose right now, there’s me, you, Sweety, and Mark Vane, five of us getting ready for lunch. You want pizza, but you see it’s a bit expensive, so you start to hesitate. You think about looking for something else, but you don’t know what to eat."

"Right! That’s exactly how it is when I order takeout. What I want to eat is too expensive, I want to change to something else, but I don’t know what to order." Hannah deeply related.

Andrew continued, "At this moment, Sweety suddenly suggests to us, ’How about we go for a group-buy grilled fish?’ Then Mark Vane and I agree. Now we’re just one person short of the four-person group-buy limit. The three of us persuade you, and since you don’t know what to eat anyway and see that the group buy is quite a bit cheaper, you agree too."

"Holy crap! You’re a genius, Boss! Why didn’t I think of that!"

With that explanation, Hannah suddenly felt a sense of enlightenment, and everything became clear, "And university dorms usually have four to six people, so a four-person group-buy limit is perfect. Then we go and squeeze the prices on the sellers’ side to support high volume with low margins, it forms a closed loop."

"Because you’re not the boss, of course you wouldn’t think of it."

Andrew raised his eyebrows smugly.

This model actually couldn’t make huge money, since it could only target the university student demographic. Where would ordinary people in society find four people to form a group buy?

But Andrew’s primary goal now was to win the gambling agreement. At the current rate of over 50,000 dollar in daily net profit, averaging 70,000, he would definitely be able to cover all previous losses and make a full 250,000 profit before New Year’s Day.

"Boss, since we’ve basically won now, and the few of us have worked so hard for so long without even taking a day off, shouldn’t we celebrate?"

Hannah suddenly raised her eyebrows and spoke to Andrew with a grin.

Looking at this cheeky appearance, Andrew felt she looked more and more like himself, ’Damn, is the way I usually act so punchable? No wonder Professor Scarlett wants to deal with me.’

Although Hannah’s request smelled like a trap to fleece him, after working hard for so long, he really should reward them.

"Alright, this weekend, I’ll take you guys out for a big meal!"

Hearing Andrew agree so readily, Hannah was excited for a moment, but she quickly calmed down and became suspicious.

"Boss, you’re not going to take us to some dirt-cheap, crappy little shop again, are you?" Hannah asked Andrew with her arms crossed and a very disdainful look.

"Hey, hey, hey! Am I really that much of a cheapskate?"

"Yes."

"I can’t be bothered to argue with you. Professor Scarlett will be coming along too, so it definitely won’t be some generic shop." Hearing that the ’boss’s wife’ was also going, Hannah knew it definitely wouldn’t be bad, and a smile appeared on her face.

"Aha! That’s fine then. We’ll wait for your notification, Boss."

"You guys keep busy, I’m heading back first."

After Andrew left the office, he went straight back to the rental apartment.

Scarlett had no classes this afternoon and had gone back at noon.

When Andrew opened the door, he found the house very quiet. Thinking Scarlett was busy preparing for lessons or working again, his movements were very careful.

When he quietly walked to the bedroom door, he saw a round, bundled-up thing curled up on the bed. A laptop was placed on the pillow, playing the ’Ben 10’ animation.

Moving closer, he saw Scarlett completely shrunk inside the quilt, with only her head poking out.

Seeing this scene, Andrew was stunned, "Scar? What are you doing?"

"I don’t know."

Andrew was a bit dazed. What on earth did "I don’t know" mean?

But he soon reacted and checked the date. Seeing it was already December 7th, he understood.

Whenever it was near the middle of the month and Professor Scarlett’s "relative" visited, she would turn into an extremely cold-sensitive koala, wishing she could curl up under the covers all day long without moving an inch.

At times like this, he needed to coax her a bit.

"Scar, are you hungry?" Andrew leaned in close to Scarlett and asked softly.

"I don’t know."

"..."

Scarlett wiggled her body under the covers and murmured again, "I really don’t know. I feel a bit hungry, but not very hungry."

"Mm..."

Andrew’s brain was thrown into a storm once again.

A bit hungry, but not hungry.

He understood every single word, but why did they sound so unlike human language when put together?

Was it Schrödinger’s stomach? In a superposition of being hungry and not hungry?

Scarlett was about to say something more when her brow suddenly furrowed, and she curled up completely.

Seeing this, Andrew immediately comforted her, "Scar, wait a moment. I’ll go brew some ginger tea for you."

Knowing Scarlett suffered from menstrual cramps, Andrew already kept brown sugar and ginger at home. It didn’t take long to brew a steaming bowl of ginger tea. After feeding it to Scarlett, her complexion improved slightly.

But Scarlett still huddled under the covers, not wanting to move.

"Scar, do you want to eat something now?" Andrew asked gently.
