Chapter 379: I Challenge You, Levis Ann

[At that moment, the Allocen Front.]

The back-and-forth exchange continued. A traditional battle between the human alliance and the Demon King’s Army, one where the concept of prisoners didn’t exist, raged on.

"Percival. How many human soldiers have we killed so far?"

"Fifty."

"And how many have we lost from our legion?"

"...Five. All the same person."

At Percival’s report, Gremory beamed. In terms of casualty exchange ratio alone, the results were nothing short of overwhelming.

"Are you alright?"

"Heh heh, it’s not as if I actually died. An avatar’s death doesn’t feed back to me at 100%."

"...Even so, there must be some pain involved."

"It’s nothing. The less mana I put into making the avatar, the greater the pain, sure. But it’s fine. I’m not so stupid that I’d endure excruciating pain just to hold the line."

The Allocen Front was still locked in a standoff. The attacks from House Sagittarius were growing less frequent, but at the same time, the continuous fighting had given the orc and Worwolf units considerable combat experience.

The only one who had died was Gremory’s avatar.

Gremory’s division was holding the enemy back quite successfully.

"We’re doing our job well here... he’d better not be losing over there."

"There’s no way. He’ll win for certain."

"Right. He’ll win. Which means we can’t just sit around either."

Gremory spread her wings. Percival climbed atop his partner Worwolf and gripped the swords he’d taken from the enemy tightly in both hands.

"This time, we’re driving House Sagittarius’s soldiers completely out of the dungeon."

"Rider unit, prepare to charge!!"

At Percival’s cry, Gremory soared into the sky. House Sagittarius’s soldiers, entrenched in the dungeon, raised their shields one by one and readied themselves for battle.

"Engage!!"

The fireball Gremory had gathered above her head flew forward and exploded, and battle resumed.

***

Crunch!

I swung the seax in a wide horizontal arc. The adventurer blocking my path lost his head in a spray of blood. The thick scent of iron tickled my nose, and I shoved his body aside and charged forward.

"Raaagh!!"

Three adventurers leveled their swords at me with tense faces. Clad in steel plate armor, they looked like they wouldn’t cut even if I buried an axe blade in them. On top of that, the steel shields in their hands, fitted together with their armor as if by design, were a real nuisance.

"Die, human scum!!"

But I swung the seax again. As it came in at an angle, the adventurer raised his shield to deflect it.

Clang!

The seax struck the bottom of the shield and slid off at an angle, dropping to the ground. Behind the shield-bearer, I could see the others preparing to cast spells. Reaching past the shield to deal with the casters was too much from here.

So I’d deal with the armored one in front of me first. I let the sliding seax slam into the ground as if driving it down.

Thunk!

The axe blade bit deep into the earth. The shield-bearing adventurer smirked at me, thinking my attack had missed, but it hadn’t. I was simply setting the weapon down to switch to another.

"Heavy armor needs to be bludgeoned!"

I snatched up the mace hanging from my waist. The club-like mace was already stained red with blood from the many people it had reduced to pulp.

"Oh no!"

The shield-bearer scrambled backward, trying to dodge. But given the weight of his armor, it was already too late. I swung the mace at an angle his shield couldn’t protect.

Crack!

"Aaaagh!!"

The blow to his thigh buckled his stance instantly. One hit landed; now it was time to follow up. But the shield-bearer had bought enough time for the adventurers behind him to act.

"Duck!"

The shield-bearer ducked his head. Beyond him, a red ball of fire rippled into view right before my eyes. Not a will-o’-the-wisp; a fireball hurtling straight at me.

Too late to dodge. So I raised the mace again.

"Raaagh!"

My target was, naturally, the shield-bearer’s head. I hoisted the mace high overhead without a care for the ball of fire closing in on me.

"Wh, what?!"

The shield-bearer was aghast at my willingness to take the fireball head-on. As if I intended to kill him and die alongside him. Sorry, but only one of us was dying.

Whoosh.

A breeze grazed my back. Invisible arrows flew in from both sides, curving through the air and striking the fireball.

Boom!

The fireball burst. A ball of flame it may have been, but in the end it was manifested from mana; wind arrows carrying mana of their own were more than enough to intercept it.

"Nice work, Lune!"

Without even looking back, I brought the mace crashing down. With a dull thud and a sickening crunch, the shield-bearer’s neck snapped.

"Uurgh...."

Disbelief on his face, the shield-bearer toppled backward. I kicked him in the sternum and sent him sprawling. The moment his attack fizzled, the moment the front line collapsed, the adventurers behind him broke and ran.

"Where do you think you’re going!"

I hurled the mace forward. It spun through the air and struck the fleeing robe-clad adventurer square in the back of the head.

Thwack.

A red spray of blood erupted as the mace bounced skyward. I imagined it miraculously coming back down on another adventurer in freefall, but unfortunately, the other one was fleeing in a completely different direction.

"I’ll handle it."

With a quiet murmur, a wind arrow shot out horizontally. I retrieved the seax lodged in the ground and caught my breath.

"Aaah!"

The adventurer pitched forward and collapsed. Through the hole torn in his robe, blood poured freely from a pierced leg. She’d shot the fleeing prey right where it would stop him from running.

"Once more."

Lune came up beside me and fired again. The downed adventurer crawled along the ground before slumping over for good. A finger-sized hole of wind had appeared in his temple.

"Lune, you alright?"

"Still in one piece. What about you, Master?"

"Good as new. Whew, there are a disgusting number of them."

The battlefield was chaos. We’d charged under cover of darkness, but the vibrations from our advance gave them plenty of warning, and the enemy had prepared well for our attack.

Raaaagh!!

Die, die, die!

You filthy monster scum!

The clash of arms rang out in every direction, hatred and killing intent surging between both sides. So different from battles in a dungeon; the aura of a battlefield overflowing with blood and slaughter stirred my body to greater heights.

"The battle... seems to be dead even."

Maybe it was because I was a Legion Commander, but I could sense the state of the battle instinctively. Despite pouring in our legion’s full strength, we were locked in a 50:50 fight with the subjugation force. It was almost laughable.

"If we’d just charged in head-on without any prep, it would’ve been a disaster. Right?"

"But still, a 50% win rate is pretty good, isn’t it?"

"True. We either win or we lose. And obviously we’re fighting to win."

The legion’s soldiers were fighting for their lives to win. For every ten human corpses in sight, at least one monster lay bleeding out beside them.

"Lune, break’s over. Let’s go again."

"Get that orc! He’s the leader!!"

A priest in a lavish-looking robe pointed at me and screamed. Several adventurers raised their weapons and closed in, but when I leveled the seax at them in warning, none dared come too close.

"That’s right! I’m the leader! Where’s yours?!"

"Wh, what are you doing?! Kill him this instant! Whoever slays that monster, the Goddess will watch over them even in death!"

"Like hell she will!"

I gripped the seax and charged forward. Two adventurers hefting considerable shields stepped up to block my path.

"If you want to kill me..."

I planted my foot on the ground at full speed and leapt. I stepped on the angled steel shield and vaulted clean over the wall of adventurers. The priest behind them stared up at me with wavering eyes.

"...then be ready to die first!"

Slice.

The downward diagonal swing of my seax split the priest in two. If he’d been able to use even a shred of divine power, he might have shielded himself, but the blade carved through his body perfectly.

"Uh, huh...?"

"Hmph. Why don’t you go check for yourself on the other side? Whether the Goddess is watching over you."

Hiss.

The red glow of my heated body began to dim. The buff I’d temporarily activated through the power of my tattoos was fading. I’d need a bit of time to reactivate them.

"N, now’s our chance!"

"Tch!"

A sharp-eyed adventurer leveled his sword at me. Others pointed their weapons my way, slashing and stabbing. I swung the seax back out of the ground in a wide arc, but I was just a hair short on power.

I got cut. I got stabbed. Lune was a beat too late to respond.

But even without Lune, I had other subordinates to back me up.

"Keeeh!"

Behind the three adventurers who had turned to face me, the Andras rushed in with claws bared. Black talons sank into their necks.

"Protect the Legion Commander!!"

Orcs came roaring in. Two adventurers who’d been eyeing me hastily spun around to face the charging orcs.

"Shoot upward!"

Lune fired an arrow into the sky. The nearby elves followed suit and loosed their arrows skyward. Some of the arrows arcing overhead rained down on the adventurers targeting me, scattering them.

"You filthy orc!!"

The adventurer closest to me drove his sword at my chest, at my heart. I twisted my body slightly, seax still in hand.

Squelch.

"Heh heh, get excited, did you?"

"Wh, what are you..."

"Ah, this is what you call a blade catch."

I clenched my arm tight so the sword wedged under my armpit couldn’t slip free. The adventurer strained with everything he had to pull it out, but it wouldn’t budge.

"If you wanted to live, you should have let go and run instead of trying to pull it out."

"Ngh, aaagh!!"

"Too late."

Crunch. I yanked the adventurer’s arm toward me and seized his head. He grabbed my arm and thrashed in desperate resistance.

"Why, why won’t the robe tear..."

"It’s a blade-proof robe, you moron. Satisfied?"

Crack. I twisted the adventurer’s head a full 360 degrees. Sent him to the other side in one swift move, as cleanly as I could without spraying blood.

"Aaagh!"

The adventurers swarming around me were dying off one by one. Bodies slashed by blades, pierced by arrows, gouged by claws lay in rows across the ground.

"Whew, thanks everyone. Are you all okay..."

"Messed up-ras."

One Andras was slumped on the ground with a dagger buried in her chest. The skin visible between her feathers was visibly rotting; she’d clearly been hit with poison.

"Legion Commander, I have a request-ras."

"Don’t say it."

"My hands won’t work anymore-ras. Please... make it quick-ras."

The Andras wore a face of resignation. The Andras beside her raised her claws, but I stopped her and picked up my axe instead.

"I will bring you back. Rest easy."

"I trust you-ras...."

Slice. I put everything I had into giving the Andras a peaceful end. When I returned to the dungeon and opened the system, her name would surely be on the Bond Summon list.

"Whew.... I’m starting to wear down."

It wasn’t my body that was tiring. It was my mind. I could kill as many enemy soldiers as needed, but having to put down our own soldiers like this, with my own hands, left a bitter taste.

"Let’s get stronger. Let’s get so strong... that no one has to die."

Someday, the mere knowledge that the Legion of Wrath stood before them would be enough to make enemies raise the white flag. Until that day, we would build our history in blood.

A sting. I gripped the seax tight as my skin began to prickle. At the same time, the monsters around me started inching backward, one by one.

"...The star of the show finally makes her entrance."

Roaaaar!

In the distance, a massive spear of light erupted toward the sky. The explosion of divine power sent orcs and Andras flying into the air and obliterated them.

"All units except the elves, listen up. Stay well clear. Focus on hunting human adventurers and keep as far away from our fight as possible."

I pulled back the soldiers who were vulnerable to divine power and charged forward with the ones who could withstand it. There, amid rows of our fallen monster soldiers, I spotted my quarry: hunched over with her spear planted in the ground, gasping for breath.

"Found you! You bi...?"

I’d been about to call out to Levis Ann and rush in. But something off about the way she was moving stopped me in my tracks.

"Ungh, hnngh...!"

Levis Ann was letting out strange, strained moans as she struggled to steady her breathing. At first I thought it was backlash from overusing her divine power, but...

Sniff, sniff.

I smelled something. Distinctly different from the others; the sharp, heady scent unique to women who possessed divine power tickled my nose.

"Heh, heh heh, eheheheh!"

I couldn’t help but laugh. Only then did Levis Ann notice me and flinch, her expression going rigid. But I already knew, instinctively.

"Well, well, we landed a whopper. Never in a million years did I expect you of all people to get caught, and yet here we are. Keheheh!"

"Y, you filthy orc...!"

Levis Ann aimed her spearhead at me with trembling hands. The gesture was still threatening, but her flushed red face was far less intimidating than before.

"I’ll be as filthy as it takes! As long as I win!"

"H, how can you call winning like this a victory?!"

"Of course it’s a victory. Just the thought of pinning you under me is about to make me rock hard."

A massive perimeter closed in around Levis Ann. Seax in hand, I approached her and gestured in every direction.

"Heh heh heh. I don’t know about anyone else, but to you, there’s one thing I’ve always wanted to say."

"Wh, what...."

"I challenge you to a duel, Levis Ann!"

Hummm! The red tattoos blazed to life across my entire body. I gripped the seax and charged into the world dyed crimson before me.

"Right here, right now, a fair fight!"

"You son of a bitch!!"

I challenged Levis Ann to single combat.
