Chapter 173: Ch173: Midnight Defiance
Daniel slipped the strand of Queena’s hair into his pouch and sat on the bench as if nothing had happened.
The shamans ate their meal, rested for half an hour, and resumed their training.
As for Daniel, Marco had him focus on physical exercises — running, carrying Veilwood for his comrades, and all sorts of manual labor — so the day wouldn’t go to waste.
...
Hours slipped by, and the afternoon sun sank toward the western horizon, painting the sky in orange and yellow.
The fifth day’s training had come to an end.
One after another, the shamans tossed aside their sweat-soaked shirts and ran to the cool river to wash away the dust and sweat clinging to their bodies.
"Cannonball!" Zushio shouted as he leaped into the river.
*SPLASH!*
"Haha! Nice one!" Pise laughed.
"Check this. The Dolphin!" Brad exclaimed as he did a backflip and plunged into the river.
Molex answered with a front flip.
Jerald, Vraden, Tridon, and Bernard jumped in one after another without any fancy tricks.
Meanwhile, as Daniel sprinted into the river, his head suddenly grew heavy.
A sharp ringing filled his ears.
His vision blurred, the world tilted around him, and legs gave out beneath him.
Before he knew it, he collapsed into the river.
*Splash~*
...
*Blink-Blink*
Daniel woke up around midnight, his head still spinning as though every ounce of strength had been drained from his body.
Beside his bed, a stool held a plate of food covered with another plate, along with a clay cup of water sealed with a clay lid.
"Ah... What happened to me?" he wondered.
*Glug-Glug-Glug*
"Mwaah... what’s this?" he muttered as he lifted the plate covering the meal.
*Grr...*
His stomach growled.
Without another thought, he picked up a cold flatbread, dipped it into the chicken curry, and ate his dinner alone in the quiet room while his comrades slept.
*Nom-Nom-Nom*
’The moon is bright. Helen and Zane could be in serious trouble. I have to tell them about the secret hideout,’ he thought, chewing the dipped flatbread.
Soon, he finished his meal and carried the plate outside.
But, what he saw made him stop in his tracks.
Out on the training grounds, someone was striking a human-shaped wooden dummy with lightning.
"Is that... Bernard?" Daniel murmured, narrowing his eyes.
Even though Daniel wanted to ignore him, Bernard was standing in the middle of the path leading to the river.
He set the plates down without making a sound, slipped into the shadows along the edge of the grounds, and crept toward Bernard barefoot.
"What are you doing?" Daniel asked in a low voice.
Bernard jolted and spun around.
"H-Huh? Oh, it’s you." He let out a breath and turned. "I’m training."
*Bzz Zap!*
A bolt of lightning shot from his palm and struck the wooden dummy.
’Damn it. I can’t head toward the river while he’s here,’ Daniel thought.
"It’s better to get a good sleep than wear yourself out," Daniel said, his tone calm.
Bernard didn’t look at him as he replied, "I don’t need sleep. You can go if you want."
Daniel fell silent for a moment before speaking again.
As long as Bernard remained on the training grounds, Daniel couldn’t sneak past him without being seen.
"Come on, don’t be ridiculous. There’s no point forcing yourself. Save your strength for tomorrow. You’ll perform even better," Daniel said.
Yet Bernard paid him no attention.
He’s not listening to me. Then, I got no choice but—
"So, you’re not going to stop? Fine. Then I’ll have to make you stop myself," Daniel said as lightning gathered in his palm.
Bernard turned as he sensed the lightning behind him.
"You think stopping me from training will help you rank higher than everyone else? Don’t make me your enemy, Daniel. I’m warning you."
"You left me no choice. Don’t blame me for what’s about to happen," said Daniel.
*Zap!*
*Zzzt~*
A bolt of lightning burst from Daniel’s palm and shot toward the wooden dummy.
Bernard unleashed his own lightning, intercepting Daniel’s attack.
The two bolts crashed into each other, bursting into branching arcs of electricity that lit up the night for a split second before vanishing into the air.
Bernard gritted his teeth.
Daniel channeled another bolt of lightning into his palm with a mischievous smile. Just as he was about to throw it, the smile vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating stare.
After a brief pause, he raised his hand and discharged the lightning into the sky instead.
*Zap!*
"Haha... Relax. I was just messing with you, Bernard. Go on with your training. I’m leaving," Daniel said with a chuckle before turning away.
Bernard frowned, unable to understand what he had just witnessed.
Daniel picked up the plates and headed to the well, placing them beside the pile of unwashed dishes.
After washing his hands, he pulled out his grimbook and began drawing the ritual diagram for a new doll.
"Veiliquandè Mikora Jim Bos Ariqueisà."
Grains of sand slid across the ground and gathered within the ritual diagram, burying the doll beneath a small mound.
Black smoke rose from it, fading to gray, then white.
Within a few minutes, a sand hand emerged from the mound, holding Queena’s doll.
*Sniff~*
"Mmm... what an interesting smell," Daniel murmured as he picked up the doll.
He then drew another ritual diagram and placed the doll at its center for the Mana Link ritual.
"Veiliquandè Mikora Jim Bos Ariqueisà."

Daniel closed the book and shoved it into Veil’s Pouch.
However, the moment he turned with Queena’s doll in his hand, Bernard rounded the corner and spotted him.
"What’s that in your hand, Daniel?" he asked, his expression filled with suspicion.
