Chapter 172: Ch172: Lightning Fails

*Thump... Thump... Thump... Thump...*

"No pain, no gain! Come on, faster!" Marco shouted as he stood at the center, urging his students on.

Daniel’s eyelids felt heavy, and his vision blurred from time to time. Not only that, he had used up a large portion of his mana during the previous night’s pursuit.

Every morning began with a jog — forty laps around the training ground, which was roughly half the size of a football field.

Some of his comrades had already finished their forty laps and were stretching on the sidelines, preparing themselves for the real training.

Daniel, however, was only about to begin his twenty-fifth lap.

"Haah... haah... I feel so tired for some reason," Daniel muttered as he wiped the sweat from his forehead.

Marco tilted his head as he watched Daniel. ’What happened to him?’ he wondered.

*Hachoo!*

Daniel sneezed but kept jogging.

...

Soon, the shamans lined up before their human-shaped wooden targets.

Everyone was in position except Daniel.

"Focus, Daniel. Feel the metal... then the core within it. Guide your lightning through it, and when the flow is steady, unleash it," Marco instructed, his tone encouraging.

Daniel placed his palm against the square metal plate, felt its cold surface, and released his lightning.

*Zap!*

The lightning failed to pass through the metal plate.

"Again! Focus!" Marco called.

Daniel gave a small nod. "My bad, Master."

A few of the shamans chuckled as they watched Daniel struggle.

Marco placed a hand on his forehead, disappointed but unwilling to give up on him.

Daniel took a deep breath, steadied his mind, and tried again.

The lightning fizzled out before it could pass through the metal plate.

He tried again.

And failed again.

"Haaachoo!"

Daniel covered his mouth with his forearm.

"Ah... excuse me, Master."

"Haaachoo!"

Seeing Daniel’s condition, Marco told him to sit in the shade of a nearby tree and get some rest.

He then turned his attention to the other students, who were still struggling to break the human-shaped Veilwood dummies.

’I need to... sleep,’ Daniel thought’ I need to tell Helen about... Zero."

Just then, Queena entered the training grounds with four workers carrying breakfast. Her gaze fell on Daniel lying beneath the shade of a tree, brows furrowed.

Marco walked over to Queena and said a few quiet words. A moment later, both of them turned their attention to Daniel.

Queena made her way over to him with a gentle smile and crouched beside him. "How are you feeling, Daniel?"

Daniel’s eyes drifted to her breasts."I’m feeling great... now."

Queena let out a soft chuckle, stood and raised a hand.

"Sharowa Florea Rejuvena."

A purplish magic circle appeared beneath Daniel, and rays of purple light rose around him, filling his body with gentle warmth.

’What is this feeling?’ Daniel wondered.

The drowsiness weighing on his eyelids faded, and the exhaustion in his body melted away within few seconds.

The other shamans paused, their attention drawn to Queena’s spell.

The master shot them a glance. "Focus!" he barked. "Eyes on your targets."

"How are you feeling now, Daniel?" Queena asked, her tone concerned as she lowered herself beside him.

Daniel’s gaze drifted to the gap at the front of her black robe. "I feel better now."

Marco walked over and looked down at Daniel. "Feeling better?"

Daniel responded with a small nod.

"Good. Get up. We still have a long way to go," said Marco.

...

However, not long after, Daniel’s lightning failed to appear.

"What’s wrong? Focus and unleash it," Marco said, his tone firm.

Daniel gritted his teeth and forced more mana into his right palm, but no lightning appeared. "It’s not coming, Master."

Marco narrowed his eyes and removed the necklace from his neck and placed it in Daniel’s hand.

The gemstone remained dark.

"What? Where’s your mana?" Marco asked, his brows knitting together.

Daniel avoided his gaze, even though he already knew where his mana had gone.

"I... don’t know, Master."

"And where is your necklace, Daniel?"

"I... uh... lost it."

A breeze swept across the training grounds, and silence settled between them.

Without mana, there was no point in continuing the training.

A look of clear disappointment crossed Marco’s face, but he only let out a quiet sigh and turned away."Go eat your breakfast. Your training is over for today."

With that, Daniel walked over to the serving table, picked up a plate of breakfast, and sat beside Queena on a wooden bench.

*Nom*

"What happened?" she asked with a curious expression.

Daniel forced a small smile. "Nothing."

’These four people... how should I distract them?’ he thought, scanning the surroundings.

Queena’s attention remained on the young shamans training ahead.

Marco moved from one student to another, correcting their stances and guiding their lightning, while the four workers sat behind her, eight eyes preventing Daniel from reaching for his shears.

He knew that if he reached for them now, he’d be caught red-handed.

Yet, Daniel refused to give up that easily.

...

Lady Queena, what element do you wield?" he asked with a hint of curiosity.

She turned with a smile. "The element of shadow."

Daniel kept the conversation going, asking one question after another.

"How long have you been a shaman?"

"What’s the power of the shadow element?"

"Have you always lived in Raven Town?"

"Is Master Marco always this strict?"

Queena smiled. "He’s always been like that. Even back when we were classmates."

She answered each of Daniel’s questions with the patience of a teacher, while Daniel played the part of an eager student.

Yet the more he asked, the closer his right hand inched toward her hair.

Soon, the training session came to an end.

Out of the nine students, Bernard was the only one who managed to crack the Veilwood dummy, earning praise from Marco.

As the shamans headed back for breakfast, Queena rose from the bench.

"Ah!"

"Oh, I’m so sorry," Daniel said almost immediately.

"It’s okay, it’s okay," she replied before walking away.

A faint smirk formed on Daniel’s face.

Resting in his palm was a single broken strand of Queena’s hair.

Hehe... thanks for the hair, Lady Queena.
