Chapter 174: Ch174: Goth Ignition
Daniel pulled his hand behind his back, slipped the doll into Veil’s Pouch, then brought both hands out in front of him.
"What? My hands?"
Bernard closed the distance between them. "I saw you holding a stick."
Daniel blinked, wearing a puzzled expression. "Oh, that? Yea I just picked up a twig from the ground and tossed it away."
A sigh of relief escaped Daniel as Bernard’s expression eased. Even so, Daniel continued holding Veil’s Pouch in his open left hand, invisible to everyone but him.
"What happened to your training?" Daniel asked, his tone casual as he slipped the pouch into his pocket.
Bernard pulled a bucket of water from the well and began washing his arms and legs. "In a few hours, it’ll be morning. I’m heading back."
With that, the two of them returned to the dormitory and went back to sleep.
Not Daniel.
His mind raced as he cooked up a plan.
...
Early the next morning, training continued as usual. The shamans stood before their human-shaped wooden dummies, while Daniel remained off to the side, pressing his palm against the metal plate supported by two wooden posts.
*Bzz! Crak!*
*BOOM!*
Just then, Bernard split the wooden dummy down the middle, exposing the metal rod running through its core. With another strike, he shattered the dummy into pieces.
"Great job, Bernard," Marco said as he walked over to inspect the broken dummy.
*BOOM!*
At the same moment, another shaman split his dummy cleanly in half.
Every head turned toward him.
"Zushio!" Marco exclaimed, a smile appearing on his face. "Well done!"
Marco called both of them over and set up two fresh dummies to test the strength of their lightning, as the previous ones had only broken after countless strikes.
Seeing that, a surge of adrenaline spread through the remaining shamans.
None of them wanted to be left behind.
FOMO.
Meanwhile, Daniel closed his eyes and felt the cold metal plate beneath his palm. Guiding the fierce lightning through his veins, and gathering it in his palm before releasing it.
Then, a flash of memories crossed his mind — the night he had sneaked into the underground hideout.
*Zzap!*
The lightning didn’t pass through the metal plate or reach the copper rod connected to the crystal sphere.
The crystal remained dull, showing that the current had failed to pass through.
A flicker of disappointment crossed Daniel’s face, but it vanished a second later, replaced by determination.
He channeled lightning into his palm once more.
*Zzap!*
...
A few hours later, Queena arrived in her usual black robe, accompanied by four workers, each carrying food and other supplies.
Bernard managed to break the dummy in two strikes of the Third Form, while Zushio needed three consecutive strikes.
Even so, there was no denying they were getting stronger.
A look of pride filled Marco’s eyes as he watched his students enjoy their breakfast.
A surge of excitement rose within him at the thought of writing their progress report, but he held himself back.
The month had yet to end.
Every morning, breakfast was usually light.
Today, however, it was different, packed with protein — chicken breast, boiled eggs, beans, and several other dishes Daniel had never eaten before.
It was more filling than usual so that, the shamans would stay full and continue their training until late afternoon with plenty of energy.
"How is this chicken so small? Hehe... Looks like the chicken hadn’t grown up yet," Zenim joked as he chewed on a piece of meat.
"It’s frog meat," one of the workers replied.
A few shamans paused for a second before continuing to eat.
"It tastes great, though," Vraden said as he reached for another piece.
"Molex, can you pass me the bowl? Thanks," Brad said as Molex slid it across the table.
In the meantime, Queena sat across from Daniel, yet her gaze remained fixed on him.
’What’s happening to me?’ she thought as warmth began to spread through her body.
’Hehe... she’s feeling it,’ Daniel murmured as he chewed his breakfast, eyes locked on Queena.
She crossed her legs, hands clasped together in her lap as she fought to stay calm and composed, but her body betrayed her.
She bit her lower lip.
The gesture alone enough for him to notice the change in her.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of Daniel’s lips.
...
Hours blurred by, and the day’s training came to an end.
The shamans headed toward the river, but Daniel slipped away from the training grounds as soon as the session ended.
*Sip~*
Daniel sat at a window-side table inside a bakery, sipping warm milk and eating biscuits as though he were waiting for someone.
Not even a minute later, a woman sat across from him. She wore a black tunic, a long black skirt, and a hood that concealed much of her face.
"Yes, Lady Queena. Why did you want to meet me at the bakery?" Daniel asked, acting innocent.
"I can’t tell you here. Follow me to my house, Daniel," she said before rising from the stool.
From the bakery, he followed her like a shadow into the residential district.
To his surprise, her house stood directly opposite the one where Helen, Zane, and the fake Zero were staying.
Daniel pulled up the front of his tunic to cover the lower half of his face before following her inside.
’Shit,’ he muttered under his breath as he stepped into the house.
From the outside, the house looked plain and dim beneath its dark roof tiles.
Most of the houses in the neighborhood looked much the same, differing only in small details.
Inside, the front was small and cozy. A wooden shoe rack stood beside the entrance, and a hallway led to the other rooms.
"Hey, Daniel," Queena called from the hallway as she lowered her hood, revealing her face. "What did you do to me?"
Daniel narrowed his eyes. "Do what? What are you talking about, Lady Queena?"
Queena stepped closer and pushed backed Daniel against the wall. Before he could react, she caught both of his wrists and pinned them above his head.
Even then, her eyes never left his.
"You think you’re the only one who can seduce others?" she said with a faint smirk. "Heh... boy. You have no idea who you’re dealing with."
