Chapter 37: Stormguard: The Main Base

The next morning Draxus woke up feeling way more refreshed than he had ever been, he slowly made his way out of the tent only to find out that the others were already awake.

"Looks like I’m one of the last to wake up." He said with an awkward smile.

"Maybe because you don’t recall the past events." Isaac’s voice came behind him, who had come over to call Draxus the moment he was up.

"Good morning general." Draxus greeted with a smile which still seemed to puzzle Isaac.

’Looks like he really doesn’t care about the attack yesterday does he?’ he thought inwardly, unaware Draxus only regarded Dyteria as an illusion, a simulation where the people in it would not actually die and he would not either, their attack didn’t actually seem like a life threatening situation to him because he knew he wouldn’t actually die even if they succeeded.

"What do you mean by me not recalling the past events?" Draxus asked after withdrawing his hands then glancing round the encampment.

"After the huge shadow that cast over the planet, the Corruption which followed shortly after and the beings that caused mass destruction across the planet those left lived on with the traumas and scars of those events, most are still unable to have a peaceful rest while a few can’t fall asleep at all, only a rare few can still shut their eyes and sleep peacefully." Isaac explained then left with a wave of his hand.

"Catch up! We should reach Stormguard before dusk so we’ll be able to spend the night there."

---

The rest of the journey for the day was free and safe without a single obstacle, the trucks sped along the tracks, by evening the convoy finally arrived at a huge metropolis bigger than Alumera with huge skyscrapers, nearly half of skyscrapers were already crushed but some still stood, emitting neon lights here and there.

Despite the city’s dilapidated appearance it still gave off a feel of what it was once like at its peak appearance.

"We’ve arrived." Isaac called out to Draxus who was sitting nearby.

"It’s not even evening yet, I thought it would take longer."

{Beep! We’ve arrived at the designation, all passengers on board should prepare to alight from the truck!} The AI system blared, giving off multiple warnings to those onboard.

The ten trucks continued travelling across the city and just like back in Alumera there was not even a single soul in sight, the city was dead aside from a few shadows and critters that passed by occasionally.

"Don’t look at it." Isaac cautioned Draxus who noticed a shadow dart past by the truck at blinding speed.

"What’s that?"

"One of the rogue critters in the city, already corrupted but not with the main pack, they either lost their way back to the pack during the tides or were just too strong for the corruption to control." Isaac replied, picking up a few objects from the control panel then turned towards the entrance.

"Too strong for the corruption to control?"

"Yes, you’re probably one of those types, I’ve never seen a human withstand the corruption’s influence though so you’re a first."

The trucks gradually came to a stop before a huge stadium the size of four football fields, the walls erected at its borders were over six meters high with several automated turrets placed above them.

"Holy, if anything actually gets close to this place they’ll get blasted to pieces."

"Don’t underestimate those automated turrets, a single one is over ten times stronger than our strongest cannon shots here." Isaac said with a grin, he was obviously proud of the main base’s defensive formations.

To be able to defend against massive amounts of mutated beasts and humans affected by the corruption multiple defensive functions and systems were put in place, just the sight of it was intimidating enough to scare Draxus, he couldn’t even imagine attacking such a huge fortress.

’Quick question, if I were to attack would I be able to break through the stadium?’

{Don’t think of it, you can’t unless you increase your grade to D- or D}

’It’s just a single grade difference though, would it change a thing?’

{It would change a lot, you were only able to use your lightning abilities when you reached grade E, the difference between a grade F and a grade E is that huge that a single grade E could take on twenty grade Fs comfortably, do you think grade D would be any worse compared to that?}

{Each grade presents a significant increase in abilities and techniques that cannot be replicated by just stats increase, when you are able to attain grade D you’ll be able to figure out what I mean}

’Alright so the main point is to not attack the stadium and stay under radar for the next three days’

{With their defensive system I doubt anything would be able to break through to even get an attack through, even if their so-called tide arrives they should be able to deal with it so you’re basically halfway done with the quest but hey? Your luck value is so low I doubt it would actually be that simple}

’Don’t jinx it.’ Draxus then walked towards the truck’s entrance along with the others also exiting the truck.

’This will probably be the longest three day time span of my life, or maybe not.’
