Chapter 19: Ant Swarm

"Orion, don’t you think you can escape from me, you promised we would stay together forever, why did you run away?" The black figure said in a rusty voice, its teeth grinding against each other as it slowly stepped out from the black tide rushing towards the convoy on its hind legs.

With hooves on its heel and two giant horns on its head it looked like a demon pulled straight out from hell with its swirling pitch black eyes.

To the soldiers manning the cannons mounted on the trucks, the attack being launched at them came from all directions. Even the path ahead was gradually getting closed on, their target was very plain and obvious: the convoy.

"We’re in deep shit, the convoy’s surrounded!" One of the soldiers manning the cannons screamed into his comm, his voice trembling constantly as he muttered incoherent words.

"I can see that, do not panic, I repeat do not panic and stick to the original path, gun down anything that gets close to the convoy and protect it till we break through the encirclement. If any of the trucks are left behind we will not hesitate to leave you behind and move forward." Listening to the orders given by his superior the soldier took in a deep breath then focused the cannon on the black tide along with the others stationed on the truck.

"I knew I would die sooner or later but I didn’t expect it to be this soon."

"What do we do?" A soldier beside him asked with a bleak look on his face.

"What else? They won’t reason with us so we might as well take the one option left for us, I’mma fire this cannon and exhaust every last ammunition before I die!" He said while glancing through the cannon’s auto lock function, he disabled the plugs and aimed it at the beasts with a mad look on his face.

"Who needs auto lock and precise aiming when there’s an endless number of them to fire at!"

Bang!

Aside from him the other tricks had also received the same order to fight their way out till the tide was left behind, every soldier took it upon themselves to fire every last shot on it to their heart’s content after all, they didn’t really have any other choice. Surrender? Dying would be better than turning into a mindless puppet or eaten alive!

In the first van Draxus was still in a stupor as to what exactly was going on, the voice had searched for him like it knew exactly where it was and what its target was, followed by the endless number of creatures rushing at them.

"They appeared out of nowhere?" Draxus asked Isaac who was still glaring at the staff checking the radar constantly sending in new reports.

"N-No not that, more are still appearing but it doesn’t look anything like teleportation, they are filing out from the ground, they were already around here before and were only attracted over by something that incited them, the heat detection devices are sending signals of hundreds of thousands more emerging from beneath the ground!" The staff said in a trembling voice, his hands tapping around on the devices with frantic eyes.

"The ground?"

{Ants}

"Ants?"

"Yes, our opponents this time are most likely ants, there’s no way to win this battle, we need to escape from their territory, that’s the only way out." The staff replied to which Isaac’s brows furrowed for a second before his eyes lit up, he raised his comm and sent an order to the other nine trucks.

"Switch the weapon camo, use the Nova flamethrower as the primary weapon and the SRP-camo as the secondary attachment, disable the auto target functions and spread them out in a mass format, I don’t want anything to get within a fifty meter radius round the convoy!"

Following Isaac’s command the soldiers and Ai command regulating the weapon functions took action immediately, switching from the regular SSR- Cannons to the nova flamethrower with sonic resonance pulse weapons attached to them, the SRP- camo emitted shockwaves at an extremely high frequency, strong enough to affect the ants who moved around using their feelers, it was basically disabling their means of sight with the flamethrowers to finish them off.

{This guy’s a little smart, he would make for a nice commander}

"Huh?"

{He barely took a single second to devise a stable plan with just the normal human average intelligence and mind, to create a comparison if you two were given the same intelligence value he would still outsmart you in every way possible}

"Yeah sure, but I still won."

"I won or not? I won, that’s what matters at the end of it all."

{Intelligence matters more than you think Draxus, not just values, not just braindead empty values but real intellect is when you can put those values to good use, I can boost your abilities and give you powers beyond your limits and the understanding of anyone else but it will all be for naught if you can’t even use them}

"Ugh, I can’t even start creating a race right now can I? We’ll deal with it when I can, I’ll find a way then but for now the main issue at hand is to pass this challenge." Draxus then walked out of the general’s compartment towards the hatch to the truck’s roof.

{What do you intend to do about the ants?}

’Nothing, for now nothing.’

’If whatever came here is looking for me then it would come over, if it can’t bypass their firepower it’s all good and if it does I’ll find a way to deal with it then, if I still can’t deal with it I’ll run and find a way to survive for the next four days.’

{You don’t seem to care about their life or death do you?} The system replied to which Draxus let out a frown, closed his eyes then reopened them seconds later.

’I don’t even know, maybe because it’s just a simulation, they aren’t real humans after all.’
