Chapter 204: Improvisation
The glyph winding up Seth’s arms stirred, mists of shadowy gas brewing as a pair of golden slits flickered to life.
Seth’s eyes blazed with a brilliant haze, a tint of gold lining the pupillary border as a cold rush of formless dark essence surged through his essence nodes.
Filled with a rush of new power, he charged forward, the cold wind bathing his body as his hands balled into fists. He arced high, appearing above the monster in an instant.
Channelling might from his stance, his fists burst through the air faster than the eye could follow—a dark membrane coating his body in the same instant.
Seeing this clash, the outcome should have been obvious. Even with his armour enhancing his prowess, he hadn’t been able to put a dent in the creature’s defence—and now he wore nothing, wielded no weapon.
But somehow, his spectators felt their heartbeats quicken at the sight.
There was no sound as the first blow struck—no impact, only penetration. A smooth, unhindered plunge.
Eyes wide, they watched as Seth’s attack dug deeper and deeper until his elbows disappeared into the monster, the thin flickering veil of shadows coating his figure slowly dwindling.
The faint growl of a dragon reverberated through the air, the glow in Seth’s eyes remaining steady as his essence streamed, fuelling his Gene skill Armageddon!
And there the air exploded...
Crackle! A sinister current bearing destruction welled from Seth’s arms, the same instant the Shadow Veil skill effect of his pet companion died down.
The Immortal King, Ancient Ruin, who had been in the motion of raising its massive club, suddenly froze—the glow in its eyes flickering erratically as a wrecking wave of deadly currents detonated inside its energy core.
As a spark ignited in an oil chamber, the wave of annihilation latched onto the divine remnant’s essence, devouring and growing—black bolts running amok deep within its innards.
Seth winced, feeling the sudden, searing pain of forcing his skill through something of such dense mass, but he gritted his teeth and focused on pouring essence into sustaining the wave of annihilation.
The immortal King’s grip over its weapon slowly loosened, the glow of its eyes growing more unstable, as gleaming cracks slowly fractured across its figure.
For the first time, the immortal King seemed to make an expression, Rage!
Its lips, cast from steel and once perceived as immovable, actually moved.
"You are not a mage! You deserve no honour!"
Its aura grew more unsteady, its frame remaining rigidly frozen as its demise slowly crept closer.
Seth blinked, bearing through the pain. "Fuck off!" he hissed.
A wave of blue swept forth!
And that was the last straw. Raw primal force supported by thick, dark, devastating currents ripped through its insides, the gleaming cracks spreading wider as the entire plain began to rumble—as though the earth itself sensed the encroaching demise of the Immortal King.
The monster never roared from the pain, only keeping its haunting gaze fixed onto Seth as the cracking gleams crept up its neck.
The cracks widened, fracturing cracks groaning and creaking as pieces of its being slowly crumbled under the destruction raging from within.
It couldn’t thrash around as a dying being was meant to, slowly losing all life.
Aside from its raging, rebellious essence destroying its system, the other reason was simply that its sheer mass didn’t permit it to.
What was once its greatest advantage had become its greatest weakness. Had it been any other immortal King, Seth being this close for this long would have been a death sentence.
Even if he was inflicting damage, the furious struggle of a being close to death was never to be underestimated.
Its joints creaked with metallic screeches, its gaze dimming as it slowly crumbled into simmering motes of drifting light.
Seth felt an instant wave of relief. The part of his arm that had been submerged in his foe’s core was now swelling red, leaking traces of annihilation sparking at the edges.
His eyes carried no satisfaction of overcoming a strong foe—in fact, only disappointment could be seen...
"No drops?" Seth lamented feeling quite regretful at the lack of one.
He glanced around at the empty, silent plain. This time the battle had ended faster than the first—he felt he was on the right track.
Clearing this thing at such a fast pace was for the best.
His understanding of the quest had previously been limited to the clues he’d been given, and he genuinely regretted not thinking outside the box sooner.
The seven foes, seven paths—the dungeon trial. While it did imply that seven classes represented seven ways to slay his foe,
in truth, it implied far more. Just because a class was a name given to a particular style of existence didn’t mean only that class could get the job done.
Knowing which class was suitable to bring down his enemy didn’t mean he could only win by emulating that class.
No—now that he had the method, he could find all other paths that led to the same destination: victory!
Which was exactly what he’d done just now. By understanding that this foe was meant for a Mage, Seth instantly understood why.
Because energy attacks were the only things that worked, he had to find a way to make his attacks bypass the creature’s defence.
Seth, not currently having the means of a Mage, decided to improvise—and to his surprise, it worked.
And now that he had fully grasped the true nature of this trial, it was safe to say things would only get faster from here on out.
Seth didn’t have any more essence crystals, so he could only recover naturally. He eased himself into a lotus position and slowly let his essence replenish.
Minutes passed and before you knew it he was already brimming with a strong aura fully recovered, and fortunately, he didn’t use nearly as much essence in this battle as in the previous ones.
He stared down at the flashing interface offering him passage to the next stage and clicked yes without hesitation.
And once more, Seth saw no Greed of Consequence offer. Instead, space undulated and swallowed him whole—his figure vanishing as the cold breeze swept across the now-empty plain, the world itself beginning to quietly unravel behind him.
