Chapter 203: Immortal King Ancient Ruin
[Warning! Immortal King: Ancient Ruin Awakens!]
Seth readied himself instantly, the Xenon sphere appearing above his outstretched palm.
Unlike the grand commotion the previous Kings had made when they awakened, this time was quite different.
Ancient simmering sparks of light kindled in the atmosphere, slowly gathering together in a languid whirl. The mere aura wafting off the stray presence of whatever was arriving was enough to make the earth tremble.
Seth instinctively glanced at the Divine weapon’s slot and frowned as he noticed it flashing red, meaning it was unable to be equipped.
Fortunately, things remained fair. Seth perceived the brewing aura of his opponent and detected no divine energy.
While the aura was palpable, it wasn’t anything remarkable—at most comparable to the Immortal King Blood-Sea’s presence.
The Xenon sphere ruptured into a liquid metal swirl, forming a pair of trusty blades in his grasp. He settled into a stance as the form of the Immortal King fully coalesced.
For the first time, Seth laid eyes on an Immortal King of a noticeably smaller frame compared to the others, towering around 8’7" if he was correct.
While that sounded tall, it wasn’t—at least not compared to its peers.
Eyes flashed as the demonic-looking Immortal King took its first step forward, its gaze burning with a savage glint.
Its body resembled cast steel etched with inscriptions that echoed ancient grace, gleaming with a bronze halo. Its face bore a resemblance to that of a demon goat.
In its grasp it carried a deadly silver club, its eyes glowing with the same brilliant bronze. It stared at Seth, and for the first time he felt the gaze of a being wholly absent of emotion.
While the creature bore a certain grace, it still held the rigidity of a sculpture—a mechanical puppet of sorts.
Another massive clang rang out as the Immortal King took another step forward, the mace dragging against the earth leaving dancing sparks in its wake.
Seth’s grip over his weapon tightened, his muscles clenching firm, his footing becoming grounded.
His gaze narrowed as the monster took another step, its metal foot colliding with the granite earth. Seth’s frame leaned forward—in a blur, he was already before his foe, swords swinging in a graceful arc.
The Immortal King, Ancient Ruin, barely reacted as Seth’s blade met its steely skin, the metal edge rebounding as fast as it came.
"Shit—" Seth barely let out a curse before he could even think to withdraw, a shadow closing over him.
The massive club barreling down through the air came in his direction. Quick on his feet, Seth swerved to the side, narrowly evading the strike.
The sheer wind from the force of attack whipped his hair backwards, the cold breeze licking his skin.
BOOOOM!
The earth rattled as a small crack ran through it—the blow had narrowly missed its target.
Seth remained steady, his swords flashing into myriad strokes that sparked against the Immortal King’s surface...
"Impenetrable!" Seth realized, instantly backing up as he sensed the monster charging another strike.
Gaze locked onto Seth, the Immortal King pressed forward in a slow, steady rhythm, its pace never faltering in the slightest as its mace scraped against the earth.
Just this brief exchange was enough to tell Seth everything he needed to know, but he still had to confirm something.
Once more his gait swayed as he instantly flashed forward, currents of annihilation coursing through the silver surface.
He struck with the ethereal grace of a nimble swordsman, as myriad arcs, thrusts, and swings all rebounded, weak sputters of annihilation flickering off the surface of its defense before dying down.
Seth frowned as blue light welled from his frame, his Will spilling into reality to coat his blades, bolstered by his essence trait. Once more, he rushed out of range.
This Immortal King’s fighting style was steady, rigid, and predictable.
It had such an abominable level of defense that pouring much into any other attribute would have made the Divine remnant feel entirely impossible to surmount.
Which was why both its movement and attack speed were excruciatingly slow—but with that level of defense, did it even matter?
Seth swayed forward, his enhanced blade wreaking another storm of silver flashes against its body, weak sparks flying—white marks left in response to his fury.
Seth winced as the rebound from his attacks was already taking its toll, his joints beginning to ache. The shadow of the mace rose once more, and Seth drew back in time to evade the sundering descent.
The swords in his hands flowed back into their true form as Seth’s gaze narrowed.
’It’s not the Knight, nor should it be the Reaper... the Mage, maybe?’ Seth squinted, pondering.
All seven Heroes represented a class. Seth had long discerned the true class of six of them: the Swordsman, the Knight, the Reaper, the Archer, the Prophet, and the Mage.
These six were obvious, but the last—the Ruler—he couldn’t quite figure out yet. One thing was clear though: if physical damage didn’t work on this creature, then it cancelled out the probability of either the Reaper or the Knight being the key to winning this battle.
That left the other three, but something in his gut told him it was the Mage.
His eyelids twitched. This would be the most annoying class among them all to emulate—setting aside the Ruler.
The reason why this was so, was because it involved a means that was his only flaw: long-range energy attacks. Seth had tried several times to output his essence the way he could his Will.
But he just couldn’t. It wasn’t something in his current means. The nearest he could get to something like this was the Hand of Tide Gene skill.
But even that was merely transmitted force through the air—it used essence as fuel to build raw, primal force, not energy attacks.
And besides, ordinary energy attacks would clearly not work on this creature. He would need an advanced Gene skill—something that could bypass defense.
Unfortunately, he didn’t have a single item on him that could do this. He frowned as he stared at the steadily approaching creature, a chill welling in his heart.
This thing seemed slow and sluggish, but it was arguably the worst foe one could face among the others so far.
Just when he was thinking of a way to remedy this flaw of his—defeat this thing and be on his way—he felt a stir in his chest... or to be more exact, on his chest.
His eyes widened as an idea struck. ’It should work,’ he thought, wasting no time, instantly dismissing his battle armor and the Xenon sphere.
He remained bare of any armor—vulnerable, some might argue—but just then, the winding glyph across his chest stirred, billowing with a shadowy mist.
His Will concentrating into his eyes, he saw beyond the plane of the physical, discerning the flow of energy in the world itself—fixing his sight on his foe and finding exactly what he was searching for in a single glance.
"This should be an easy win," he smirked...
