Chapter 202: Third Trial...
Seth’s mind slowly came to, the steady beat of his heart reverberating in a soothing rhythm.
His eyelids parted as the blurry sight of a sky lined with withered trees came into view...
[Welcome back, Master....]
Mark’s voice rang from within his helm.
Rising to a sitting position, the armor cranked and restructured itself, reforming back into its exoskeletal form.
"Hi Mark... any update?" he asked, feeling relieved.
[None in particular, Master.]
He nodded. The fact that he was still alive clearly meant the Immortal King was dead.
Seth sighed. The battle had been both effortless and costly; it seemed wielding divine energy came at far too high a price.
Even though he was fully recovered, his body still felt sore, his existence suddenly lackluster.
It was as though, after being baptized by a higher form of energy, his body had been permanently altered, now existing in a constant longing.
He could feel his essence instinctively building upon itself, his muscles retaining some of the might they had carried when that arcane force of divinity coursed through them.
He could tell stat-wise his strength and speed hadn’t increased, but his efficiency with them had soared.
Just two attacks, and he was left in this state. He still had five more enemies to face. "Yeah, I’m not sure I’ll be pushing my luck."
He summoned the system interface, notifications popping in...
[Congratulations! You have slain Awakened Grade Divine Remnant Verdania!]
[You grow stronger...]
[+245 Essence]
[+210 Vitality]
[+182 Intelligence]
Seth’s eyes flashed as he scanned through the prompt, licking his dry lips, unable to help but feel that slaying these Immortal Kings was truly profitable.
At this rate, he would be pushing the peak of the Awakened rank before he even left.
In fact, if he were anyone else, he might have had a chance at maxing out his stats—but Seth had a dual-class constitution, his stat capacity double that of others.
He scrolled through the remaining notification blocks, and apart from a few warnings about his low essence and vitality, there was nothing else of note...
He did notice that his use of divine force cost more than just the exhaustion of his primary reserves—it had also caused a fatal shortfall in his Essence Unit Capacity by [200] and his Vitality by [50].
Just like that, he had lost stats. Though his gains from the kill covered the losses, it still showed him why this was not a force he could mess with on a whim.
This was a devastating power that could bring ruin upon his foes, but one that came at an understandably steep cost.
He rose to his feet, already feeling impatient. He stared at the screen offering progression to the next level, and while he wanted to accept and move on immediately, his greedy nature wouldn’t allow it.
He had to search for loot first. Since he wasn’t fully clear on the dungeon mechanics, he needed to confirm.
The ground cracked beneath him as a heavy gust of wind burst outward, and Seth instantly took to the skies, off to locate the spot of his enemy’s demise.
Within seconds he arrived above the now rough, uneven terrain—the exact spot where he had landed his finishing strike—his pupils flickering bright as they honed in on something glinting in the distance.
Seth honestly hadn’t carried much hope of finding anything, but he had wanted to check regardless.
So seeing this, he was naturally surprised. He wasted no time diving downward, the gales of wind howling as he drew close enough to see.
"Hehe, bingo!" he grinned, his gaze sparkling as he got a clearer look at what it was.
A bright yellow spiraling orb levitated in the deep crater, surrounded by nothing but debris and upturned earth.
Seth was already beginning to understand a great deal, and now he knew a yellow orb signified Awakened-rank loot.
But the deeper the color, the better the quality—it could even be used to gauge the grade of whatever it held within.
Grinning ear to ear, Seth snatched the orb. It vanished the moment it made contact, automatically registering itself to his inventory.
Eyes lit with curiosity, he searched for the description of whatever he had just acquired.
He reckoned whatever a divine-level enemy dropped couldn’t be disappointing—right?
[Bracelet type item: Wood Talisman!]
[Rank: Awakened]
[Abilities:]
- Wood Escape!: Wherever there is wood, there will be a way. You gain the ability to instantly transport yourself through the network of wood, unbound by spatial interruption.
- Nature’s Incubation: Whenever nature thrives, your recovery rate of both essence and vitality is boosted by 70%.
Seth would be lying if he said he wasn’t disappointed. He had anticipated something more groundbreaking and stunning—but this?
Not bad, but not something to be overly excited over. He instantly summoned the wooden bracelet—three crusty brown vines intertwined, forming a band around his wrist beneath his battle armor.
The passive effect of the Gene skill Weapon Resonance instantly amplified the bracelet’s abilities to a new level.
Seth took some more time to check around in case he was missing something else.
Nodding to himself, satisfied, he instantly accepted the screen prompting whether he’d like to progress to the next level.
His eyes held a bright glimmer of anticipation—would he be given another Greed of Consequence offer?
Just as he waited in silent anticipation, his surroundings warped, his vision spinning...
In an instant, his figure vanished from the plane, ascending to the next level.
Already growing accustomed to abrupt teleportations, Seth barely felt the weight of the transition—he was more confused than anything.
He blinked, taking in the sight of the new location. ’Wait, just like that? No offers?’ he lamented, half regretfully.
Even though he would have felt hesitant accepting it—after all, too much was never always a good thing.
He still expected an offer, as it would have provided the vital clue he needed to clear this stage.
But he got over it rather quickly, finding intrigue in the setting of the new plane—unlike the others, which had borne the illusion of an infinite expanse.
This place was starkly different. "A battle ring?" Seth wondered, as that was the best way he could describe his poorly lit surroundings.
The ground, made of inscribed granite, spanned at least 20–30 kilometers. Due to the platform being entirely level, his enhanced eyesight could see all the way to the end, which appeared to be enclosed by golden woven ring-ropes.
As for what lay beyond the barriers enclosing the platform—merely a grey haze of nothingness.
In that very instant, the earth began to rumble in a strange rhythm... his fists clenched as he steadied himself, getting ready.
The Immortal King was awakening...
