Chapter 198: Greed of Consequence

Within hours that passed, Seth recovered himself properly, his essence brimming to the maximum. He rose to his feet, dry crusts of blood and grime peeling away.

Without wasting any more time, he welcomed the cold embrace of his genetic battle suit, clenching and unclenching his fists to make sure he was ready.

He let out a heavy breath. "Let’s see the next stage." His eyes gleamed as he focused on the Gothic red screen glowing in his view.

His finger hovered over the option for several seconds, steeling his nerves before he tapped Yes. Anticipating another abrupt but instant teleportation, he was taken aback to see a follow-up screen appear.

[By clearing the first leg of the Trial you have been granted an offer....]

[Greed of Consequence!: Accept the ancient relic of the ancient hero deity The Archer? Yes / No]

[Warning!!: Accepting means lifting limits over divine remnants...]

[NOTE: While their rank in power will not go beyond Awakened, they will regain their grasp over divine energy! BEWARE!!!]

Seth’s eyes flickered, a mix of both confusion and intrigue washing over his mind...

As he read through the warning and note, his uncertainty and wariness grew. He frowned deeply.

’Divine energy? Never heard of it...’ he mused, immediately summoning the Oracle crystal to see if it had answers.

The emerald crystal appeared beside him. He asked straight away, "What is divine energy?"

The crystal pulsed, processing a reply. Only this time, several drawn-out seconds passed, and it still remained silent.

Raising a brow, Seth turned his gaze to the crystal. It remained quiet, still processing the information.

’Strange... it has never taken this long before...’ he wondered. Even when it didn’t have the information, it was always frank and fast.

’Could it be—’ Before he could finish his thought process, the crystal finally responded.

[Information regarding the divine has been censored, and remains unavailable...]

Seth’s eyes gleamed with intrigue as he received this reply. This was a first for sure.

He had encountered abrupt restrictions due to tier privilege limits, but facing something censored? That was new.

He almost felt tempted to ask why it was censored, but that was redundant. If the crystal could give a response to that, it would have relayed it along with the censorship warning.

He waved his hand, dismissing the Oracle. He didn’t have time to waste. Though he wasn’t on any particular timer, he had friends probably waiting for him back in the origin realm, plus many more goals to accomplish before Earth’s upgrade was complete. He was in quite a hurry.

He stared at the offer once more, feeling hesitant to reject it. While enticing, the implications were something he couldn’t quite fathom.

If taking down the Immortal King Blood-Sea was already so difficult, how much harder would it be to defeat the others enhanced with divine energy?

It was a deadly risk anyone in his shoes would have cautiously avoided. After all, clearing the trial was already tough as it was.

Adding this to the mix? It would be countless times worse...

But... he wasn’t everyone. A smile stretched across Seth’s lips as he made the calculation.

While anyone else would have avoided this offer, not everyone had Seth’s Absolute Weapon Resonance!

Thanks to this gene skill, Seth’s ability and versatility scaled with his arsenal. The stronger his weapon, the more absurdly powerful he became.

That wasn’t to say he was weak without weapons — he was evidently not. But it did imply that Seth with high-grade items was the equivalent of a tiger with wings.

And besides... "This is a clue." He whispered, his grin cracking wider.

While this offer seemed to be the subject of discussion, it carried a crucial hint about the next trial.

His eyes focused. ’The Archer, huh?’

Briefly acknowledging this hint, which might have been the true purpose of the offer, his finger dropped casually upon Yes.

The screen flickered, as though in a glitch, distorted pixels cracking across the interface...

It reformed.

[Are you sure? Yes/No]

Seth chuckled coldly. "Of course I am!" He tapped on Yes once more, his decision firm.

The Gothic gleam of the screen slowly burned brighter, pulsing into what seemed to be a loot drop flashing with a luminescent cadence of ancient arcane gold.

A low hum rang out, like ancient cries of divinity itself. Seth licked his dry lips, his eyes flashing with greed he didn’t even bother to hide.

His hands reached for the orb, and the moment he touched it, his vision spun and space violently shifted, swallowing him along with the glowing orb.

Leaving the endless stretch in a dark silence as it slowly unraveled into nothing.

---

The faint glow of the observation screen cast across the faces of everyone silently observing Seth.

Everyone’s mood sank into disappointment and confusion.

Everyone in this room were absurdly powerful beings, part of such a mighty faction. Each figure here was levels above the likes Seth had ever seen before.

And yet even they wouldn’t want to face an Awakened-rank creature that could wield divinity!

Their eyes reflected horror, unable to comprehend Seth’s decision.

"Could it be ignorance?" A figure resembling a humanoid carved from stone muttered, his voice ringing through the room.

The lizard man’s teeth flared bright as he sneered. "Ignorant or not, he just signed his death warrant!"

Everyone nodded in silent agreement.

What did this guy think divinity was?

Divinity was a clear-cut element separate from the forces of nature itself. It was one of the only forces in existence that could rival pure origin and corruption.

Simply put, those who wielded this force were untouchable by the masses. There was a reason such beings were dubbed deities.

And this guy went ahead and put himself against such a force? Was he tired of living?

Essence and Will, no matter how powerful and dense, had nothing on these three top forces. You could only harm a wielder of divinity with divinity — or one of the other two!

Any other attempt would be absolutely and totally ineffective!

There was a reason that out of the millions — billions even — of contestants who had attempted this trial, none had ever accepted this offer.

And while it did seem like a fair trade — after all, you were being offered a chance to gain a Divine item in return —

That was straight deception!

Divine items could only be wielded by deities, and no other. That was common knowledge.

This was practically a high-risk, zero-reward situation everyone avoided. So seeing Seth accept this offer made those anticipating the next battle feel quite disappointed.

To them, this battle was as good as over. Not only would he have to show his mastery in seven paths, he would also have to battle divine remnants with their full access to uncapped divinity...

Farad’s third eye remained focused on the screen. Unlike the others, he didn’t react much. He silently spectated.

Instead, he couldn’t help but feel a hint of foreboding budding in his heart...

Not only had his countless attempts to use his innate scanning ability — a power that transcended space and time, allowing him to peek into the secrets of the universe itself — failed on this guy.

He had also suffered a wicked backlash. The third eye abruptly snapped shut, his face paling as he felt a fracture tear in his soul...

It took every strand of his Will to remain standing, silently suppressing the injuries so no one would notice. His eyes glued to the screen, he wondered silently:

"This guy... who is he?"
