Chapter 196: Six More To Go!
Within the spectating room aboard the grand spaceship...
By this point, every screen in the chamber depicted one scene — the battle between Seth and the Immortal King remnant, Blood-Sea.
No one carried as much interest in how their students and faction prodigies were faring as they did in Seth.
This figure was indeed the embodiment of a wildcard!
Not only had he appeared from nowhere, he was a talent never nurtured by their faction or affiliates.
To make matters worse, he had ventured into a trial that had never been cleared in living memory. No one could even recall the last time they had a promising wildcard candidate.
The requirements to fit the Joker role were simply that tough — almost impossible to fulfill.
Yet right before their eyes, a creature of unknown race was this close to clearing the first milestone. Well, calling it "close" was a stretch, but still...
"Farad..." the lizard man called to his companion beside him, "can... can you tell his race?"
He asked, turning his scaled head to stare at the figure beside him.
His question caught everyone’s attention, turning them toward Farad in anticipation of a reply.
As a high-ranking member of the Diamond Suit — the branch of the House of Cards known for boundless intelligence and information gathering — and an Ace at that, the most likely to discern Seth’s origin among them had to be him.
Farad’s eyes remained glued to Seth’s draconic frame depicted on the screen. He stayed silent for a few seconds.
But in the end, he shook his head, expressing his lack of knowledge. Disappointment rippled among the others as they fixed their focus back on the screens.
Farad’s Will thrummed. "What I can tell you is that this form we are seeing him display is definitely not racial. If I am correct, this should be the workings of a pet companion."
His words caused a light of acknowledgement to flash within the eyes of the others. They spectated Seth with renewed scrutiny.
Based on his performance so far, he indeed had a chance of scaling Blood-Sea. But the others? That was where the true challenge began...
---
Back in the dungeon...
Seth’s eyes gleamed as his sword whisked through the air, its edge glinting with sinister purpose.
But just as it was about to meet its mark and cut through the thin seams between his opponent’s neck and shoulder, his nose twitched.
With the amplification of dragon senses bolstering his already absurdly high perception as a bronze human, he could perceive the inconceivable with just a sniff.
His pupils constricted. His wings pulled back against the wind as he performed an impossible retreat, putting distance between himself and his foe.
The moment Seth whisked out of sight, the ground flared with a circular light of crimson runes. A devastating well of raging crimson burst from the earth, swallowing meters around the Immortal King.
Seth felt a chill sink down his spine at the sight. His wings beat furiously as he watched the eruption die down, the figure of Blood-Sea walking out unscathed.
It seemed the creature was immune to its own attacks. Holding one blade at an upside angle, the cold edge resting on his forearm, and the other upright, Seth streaked downward.
There were eight core forms of swordsmanship...
Thrust, Slash, Parry, Block, Riposte, Feint, Guard, Cut.
And if he was going to win this battle by the Swordsman’s standards, his battle flow had to utilize these principles to the fullest.
The Immortal King stared at the skies at his fast-descending foe. His crimson-plated arms parted, crimson essence stirred, and a glowing ominous primal pattern formed behind him.
Gleaming spears billowing with sanguine cadence peeked out of the glowing spell.
Eyes burning with focused hate, he swung his arm forward, sending the array of deadly spears streaking through the skies.
Seth’s wings curled, whipping against gales with controlled might and precision as the glyph dragon’s instinct guided him.
With his adept hold on space through the Willborne ability Dimensional Strider, his figure zigzagged through the onslaught, his speed only increasing.
His mind cranked to full gear, processing at maximum capacity as his eyes traced every strike.
"Hmphhhh!" The Immortal King snorted, crimson lights blooming in his grasp.
It was painfully obvious that pure energy attacks — long-range and unexpected flares — didn’t work on his foe.
If anything, Seth seemed more adept at perceiving every strand of essence employed and reacting in tow.
This battle had to get physical. If not, he would remain passive until erased!
The pair of crimson orbs beneath the visor burned. That couldn’t happen! It wouldn’t happen!
A pair of heavy sabers crystallized in his hold, glinting ominously.
The earth cracked and sank as the Immortal King’s plated thighs met his calves and his figure sprang, soaring into the air, a towering billow of pungent blood essence fuming from his frame.
He poured all essence into physical enhancement.
Seth’s eyes flashed as his blades spun to meet his foe!
A shattering wave erupted from the clash, crimson and purple pressing against each other. Seth’s wings beat...
Bang! He burst forward, winning the clash due to his ability to fly. His swords pressed on his foe as his obsidian scaly wings generated force his opponent couldn’t contest.
The two crashed into the earth, Seth above bearing less impact, a wave of dust and debris erupting into the air.
Unsurprisingly, the might gained by Seth after transformation, though weaker, was enough to oppress his foe given the advantage he had.
If only he had suitable armor to wear, this battle would have been as good as over, especially with the enhancement from his Gene skill.
But currently, most armors in his inventory flashed red, unable to be equipped due to lack of affinity with the new limbs Seth had sprouted in this dragon manifestation form.
Feeling the earth, the Immortal King’s eyes burned, his sabers pulsing ominously...
Seth wasted no time pulling distance as a wave of crimson erupted from the blades.
The Immortal King used the opportunity to spring to his feet, another pair of sabers condensing to replace the ones lost. Two deep footprints cracked into the earth as his figure turned blurry.
Seth, deciding to remain in low altitudes, pulled on his Willborne ability... but nothing responded.
He felt a cold trickle down his nose as the system flashed in warning:
[Warning! Warning! User’s Will is getting exhausted...]
His eyes flashed grimly. Will was what kept a creature coherent and conscious. Exhausting this crucial force was akin to a death sentence mid-battle.
He had to cut all losses and stop pulling on his Will reserves. His eyes gleamed as his figure billowed. The speeding strike of the Immortal King’s saber swept through Seth’s figure — but met zero hindrance.
The monster’s eyes flickered in shock. Seth had been dodging so much he forgot about the uncanny ability this foe had to phase through attacks!
Immediately, the King positioned himself defensively, ready to retreat.
But in Seth’s watch, that wasn’t happening. He pressed forward, wings assisting his speed on land, his gleaming silver swords arcing.
A ringing clang shuddered through the air as two more gashes dug into Blood-Sea’s armor. Seth’s eyes blazed brilliantly as he pushed on.
A hurricane of silver streaks wreathed upon the Immortal King as Seth unleashed strike after strike with furious abandon!
He gave his foe no breathing space, no time to recover, leading him by his own tempo. The Immortal King was oppressed by the sheer storm of silver slashes, cuts, and thrusts.
Each cut struck a singular spot, each thrust jabbed into an open weak point, each slash dug into thin seams of the King’s armor.
Seth’s breath held, his eyes bulged, his black sclera streaked red. He didn’t relent... his movements were of sinister grace and devastating purpose.
Within seconds, the Immortal King couldn’t even remain passive. From parrying a few strikes to being so overwhelmed he couldn’t react anymore.
His eyes burned crimson, indignant. His sabers pulsed with familiar intensity. But Seth, already anticipating this, struck at his opponent’s weakened grip, whipping the sabers into the distance with a kick.
His wings flapped, drawing him back into proximity before the creature could retreat. A wave of blue rose from Seth’s dark figure.
Annihilation thrummed within his silver blades, leaving dark lightning streaks. With a furious roar as he sped through the air, Seth utilized all his Gene skills in a single harmonious convergence.
His blades dug into the already battered chest plate of the creature...
"Nooooooooo!" The ancient roar reverberated in pain as gleaming cracks spread through the figure of Immortal King Blood-Sea...
His eyes burned with unquenchable rancor as he cursed: "You may have overcome me, but there are six more!"
Seth’s cold gaze locked onto him.
"Don’t worry. I won’t keep you waiting for long. I’ll send them to join you on the other side."
His blades twisted, digging deeper into the fractured chest plate. The Immortal King’s body convulsed, cracks spreading like wildfire across the regal crimson armor.
A thunderous roar echoed through the dungeon as the remnant’s essence destabilized. The crimson light that once radiated with oppressive majesty now flickered erratically, sputtering like a dying flame.
Seth’s wings flared wide, obsidian scales shimmering with streaks of ivory, his figure looming over the collapsing foe. With a final surge of annihilation coursing through his silver blades, he cleaved downward.
The Immortal King Blood-Sea shattered into a storm of glistening shards, fragments of crimson essence scattering into the void. The oppressive aura that had suffocated the battlefield dissipated in an instant, leaving only silence and the faint howl of the whistling wind.
The system chimed in his ears:
[Congratulations...]
