Chapter 160: Chapter 160: The Shadow Queen [2]

The silence that followed the collapse of the Light Orb was suffocating, a heavy blanket of disbelief that pressed down upon the spectators.

Then, the sound erupted—a jagged, frantic chorus of gasping air and shrieking voices that shattered the tension.

The crowd screamed, their faces contorted into masks of sheer, primal terror. This was not the boisterous roar of excitement that usually defined the high-stakes arena bouts.

They clutched the railings of the stands, their knuckles turning ghost-white as they stared at the gruesome, impossible display occurring on the stone floor below.

Damon Arcknight stood at the edge of the shadows, his luminous golden eyes tracking every microscopic shift in the arena with detached, predatory grace.

He watched as the onlookers recoiled, their sensibilities fractured by the sight of Mia Nightrider—a girl who had effortlessly bypassed the fundamental laws of light and shadow, turning an opponent’s very anatomy into a tomb.

To the masses, this was a violation of reality, a sickening peek into a darkness they could not comprehend.

But to Damon, a man who saw power as the only currency worth hoarding, it was a masterpiece of lethal efficiency.

He didn’t flinch at the chaos; he didn’t join in the panic.

Instead, his lips curled into that signature, magnetic smile, his mind already calculating the strength Mia would continue to cultivate beneath his guidance.

He was the architect of their current elevation, and as the cries of the horrified masses grew louder, he felt only the steady, cold ambition of a future sovereign content with the carnage unfolding at his feet.

Because what they had just witnessed defied everything they knew about cultivation.

Shadow techniques relied on external darkness. On the absence of light. On the shadows cast by objects and people.

But Mia had hidden inside the shadow within Lucian’s own body.

The shadow of his organs. The darkness behind his eyes. The void that existed in the space between his cells.

She had crawled into the one place light could never reach.

Lucian’s body went rigid. His Light Orb flickered, the No-Shadow Zone destabilizing as his concentration shattered.

"How?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "How is that possible?"

Mia leaned close to his ear, her voice soft and cold.

"Light illuminates the outside. But every living thing carries darkness inside. The shadow of your soul. The void in your heart. The blackness behind your eyes when you blink."

She pressed the daggers closer.

"I don’t need the world to be blanketed in darkness for my blades to find their mark," Mia whispered, her voice a lethal, velvet thread that seemed to coil around Lucian’s failing composure.

"It is a fundamental truth of the universe: as long as you breathe, you harbor the void. I don’t need external shadow to exist, Lucian. I just need you to be alive, and consequently, I need your inner decay to give me purchase."

The psychological weight of her words, coupled with the lingering, necrotic chill of her presence, shattered his final reserves of defiance.

Lucian’s legs, previously steady with the arrogance of his Light arts, buckled violently, his knees striking the stone platform with a hollow, sickening crunch that echoed through the sudden silence of the arena.

He collapsed to his knees, his hands trembling, his face pale as death. The Light Orb dissipated completely, plunging the arena back into normal light.

But the shadow was still there.

Mia’s shadow.

It stretched across the platform, reaching toward him like a hungry beast.

"I surrender!" Lucian screamed, his voice cracking with terror. "I surrender! Please! Get it away from me!"

Elder Alder stepped forward, his face unreadable. "The winner is Mia Nightrider."

Mia withdrew her daggers and stepped back. She sheathed her weapons and walked toward the edge of the platform without looking back.

Lucian remained on his knees, staring at his own hands as if he expected shadows to crawl out of his skin at any moment.

The crowd erupted.

But it wasn’t cheers.

It was whispers. Murmurs of fear and awe.

"Did you see that?"

"She came out of his body."

"She’s not a shadow cultivator. She’s something else."

"Goddess of Death."

The name spread through the stands like wildfire.

Goddess of Death.

Mia Nightrider, the shy twin who always hid behind her sister, had just demonstrated a technique so terrifying that even the elders in the VIP section looked shaken.

In the Sect Leader’s box, Sect Leader Hector leaned forward, his eyes narrowed. "That technique. I’ve never seen anything like it."

Beside him, Mei smiled, her eyes gleaming with maternal pride. "That’s because it doesn’t exist in any sect library. It’s hers alone."

"Who taught her?"

Mei’s smile widened. "Who do you think?"

Sect Leader Hector’s gaze shifted to Damon, who sat calmly in the VIP gallery, watching Mia walk toward him.

’That boy, What else is he hiding?’ Sect Leader Hector thought.

Mia reached the edge of the platform and leaped down. She walked through the crowd of disciples who parted before her like waves before a ship.

No one met her eyes.

No one dared.

She reached Damon and stopped, her shy smile returning as if the terrifying display had never happened.

"I did it." she said softly.

Damon reached out and tucked a strand of purple hair behind her ear. "You did more than that. You just became the most feared woman in this sect."

Mia’s cheeks flushed. "Is that good?"

"It’s perfect."

Ariel stepped forward and hugged Mia. "That was incredible! Where did you learn to do that?"

Mia glanced at Damon. "He taught me. The Shadow Sovereign Art. It’s not about controlling external shadows. It’s about understanding that darkness exists everywhere. Even inside light."

Mio approached, her expression a mix of pride and competitive fire. "You’re making the rest of us look bad, sister."

Mia giggled. "I just followed his instructions."

From across the arena, Damon felt eyes on him.

He turned and saw Alena Terra watching him from her seat, her purple eyes burning with curiosity and something else.

Desire.

Not for his body.

For his knowledge.

She wanted to know what else he could teach.

Damon smiled and turned back to his women.

The tournament continued, but the atmosphere had changed.
