Chapter 159: Chapter 159: The Shadow Queen [1]

The arena buzzed with anticipation as Elder Alder stepped forward, his voice cutting through the noise.

"The next match pits Mia Nightrider against Lucian Voss!"

A tall, broad-shouldered disciple with golden hair and pale blue eyes leaped onto the platform.

His robes shimmered with embedded light crystals, and a faint glow radiated from his skin.

Lucian Voss. Core disciple. Earth Spirit Realm Seventh Level.

Known for his rare Light affinity techniques that had earned him a reputation as the bane of dark element cultivators.

Mia walked up the steps slowly, her purple hair falling straight around her face. She kept her eyes down, her hands hidden in her sleeves.

The contrast between them was stark.

Lucian blazed like a small sun. Mia was a whisper of darkness.

Damon watched from the VIP gallery, his Incubus Celestial Eyes already active. He could see the light Qi swirling around Lucian like a protective cocoon.

’He’s confident. Too confident.’Damon thought.

Lucian cracked his neck and smiled at Mia. "I heard you’re good with shadows, junior sister. Too bad for you."

He raised his hand, and a sphere of brilliant white light bloomed above his palm.

"I’ve spent three years perfecting this technique just for cultivators like you."

The sphere expanded rapidly, shooting upward before detonating into a dome of pure, blinding radiance that covered the entire arena platform.

The No-Shadow Zone.

Every corner of the platform was flooded with light. Every surface reflected it. There was no angle where a shadow could exist.

The crowd gasped as the light intensified, forcing many to shield their eyes.

Mia stood in the center of the dome, her figure stark and alone. No shadow stretched beneath her feet. No darkness clung to the edges of the platform.

She stood completely exposed under the relentless onslaught of the illumination, the harsh brilliance robbing her of her greatest tactical asset.

The No-Shadow Zone acted like a spiritual cage, scrubbing the arena floor clean of any darkness where she might have anchored her movements.

Lucian’s laughter echoed, sharp and biting against the roar of the observing crowd.

"What’s the matter, little shadow girl?" he jeered, his golden-hued light flickering with arrogant triumph.

"Lost your courage now that you can’t skulk in the corners? Can’t hide in the dark anymore?"

Without waiting for a response, he balled his fist, coalescing his spiritual energy into a jagged, humming spear of blinding light. With a flick of his wrist, he hurled the projectile forward.

Mia reacted with the fluid, unnerving grace of an apex predator shifted into a defensive posture.

She pivoted on her heel, the spear whistling past her cheek and grazing her dark robes; the intense heat of the light magic bit into the fabric, leaving behind an acrid, blackened scorch mark on her sleeve.

Even as the threat loomed, she did not retreat into a panicked state, nor did she attempt to manufacture a desperate counter-strike.

She made no move to draw the razor-sharp daggers hidden at her waist.

Instead, she remained unnervingly still, her deep purple eyes locked onto Lucian, watching him with the calm, predatory intensity of a woman who was merely waiting for the perfect clockwork moment to strike.

Lucian’s confidence wavered for a fraction of a second. Then he formed another spear and threw it faster.

Mia dodged again, but this time the spear clipped her shoulder, drawing a thin line of blood.

The crowd murmured. Some of the outer disciples who had seen Mia’s earlier match looked confused.

"Why isn’t she fighting back?" Ariel asked from beside Damon.

Damon didn’t answer. He was watching Mia’s eyes.

Lucian formed six spears of light, arranging them in a circle around his body. "Enough playing. I’ll end this now."

The spears shot forward simultaneously, converging on Mia from every angle.

She moved.

The spears struck her body simultaneously, exploding into a cascade of brilliant light that blinded the entire arena.

When the light faded, Mia was gone.

The crowd fell silent.

Lucian’s eyes widened. He spun around, searching the platform. "Where did you go? Show yourself!"

Nothing.

The No-Shadow Zone was still active. There was nowhere for a shadow cultivator to hide.

And yet, it persisted.

A sensation far more unnerving than a mere blade’s edge; a frigid, phantom whisper slithered its way up Lucian’s rigid spine, sent in by a source he couldn’t possibly fathom.

He felt something stirring.

It was a cold, creeping pressure that felt as though it had bypassed his senses entirely, taking root deep within the marrow of his bones.

He felt it—an intrusion not upon the air surrounding his body.

An internal, freezing ripple that mocked his reliance on sight and spatial awareness.

It was rattling him, burrowing into the very core of his being, turning his blood to sludge and his confidence into a frantic, hammering vibration against his ribs.

Inside. It was already inside.

A presence. A darkness. A void that had no business existing within a vessel of light.

His heart stopped.

He looked down at his own chest, and for a moment, he thought he saw something moving beneath his skin.

It wasn’t merely a trick of the flickering arena torches or the disorienting haze of combat.

This shadow was an anomaly, a jagged scar of absolute darkness that defied the very laws of light and geometry he had mastered.

It pulsed with a rhythmic, sickening cadence that matched the frantic tempo of his own terror, coiling around his internal organs like a living parasite.

A strangled, wet gasp tore its way from his throat as he stumbled, his legs suddenly feeling as heavy as leaden pillars.

"What in the hell are you?" he wheezed, his voice fracturing into a panicked rasp that barely breached the suffocating silence of the arena.

He clawed uselessly at his own chest, his fingers scraping frantically against his robes as if he could physically rip the nightmare from his own marrow.

His question didn’t find an answer, at least not in words. Instead, the void surrounding him began to bloom outward, a vortex of liquid darkness peeling away from his very pores.

The air temperature plummeted, frost spiderwebbing across his trembling hands, and from that depthless, ink-black abyss, she began to take shape.

Mia Nightrider rose from Lucian’s own shadow on the platform floor, her body materializing like smoke condensing into flesh.

She rose up behind him, her daggers already pressed against both sides of his neck, the tips hovering millimeters from his eyes.
