Chapter 158: Chapter 158: Mio vs Kalen [2]
Mio didn’t answer. She couldn’t. The noise was too loud, too chaotic, drowning out everything except the pounding of her own heart.
But in that pounding, she found something familiar.
Damon’s voice, echoing from a memory.
"Your Void Sniper Physique isn’t just about seeing. It’s about sensing. The void exists in the spaces between things. Between particles of air. Between moments of time. Between sounds."
She closed her eyes.
The arena fell into darkness behind her lids. The noise continued, a relentless assault on her ears, but she pushed it aside.
She focused on the space within herself. The quiet center that existed beneath all the chaos.
Her Void Sniper Physique stirred.
It was more than a bloodline. It was an extension of her very being, a connection to the emptiness that underlay all existence.
She nocked another arrow.
Kalen saw the movement and intensified his attack. Waves of sonic energy crashed against her, so powerful that the stone beneath her feet cracked.
The protective hexagonal barrier, shimmering with the intense, iridescent hum of a high-level Spirit Formation, began to flicker and groan under the immense atmospheric pressure generated by Kalen’s sonic assault.
Sparks danced across the translucent surface like captured lightning, the stone flooring beneath the weight of the vibrations threatening to shatter into dust.
Yet, amidst the precarious collapse of the arena’s defenses and the overwhelming cacophony that had forced the surrounding spectators to shield their ears in agony, Mio remained an anchor of perfect, unwavering resolve.
She did not flinch, her stance remaining as fluid and precise as a predatory cat’s, her concentration so absolute that even the violent trembling of the world around her failed to penetrate the tranquil sanctuary of her mind.
She drew the bowstring back, and as she did, she reached out with her senses. Not through the air, which was filled with noise. But through the void. The spaces between the sound waves.
She found Kalen’s position. His spiritual energy signature. The exact point where his next attack would originate.
She released.
The arrow flew not through the air, but through the silence that existed within the noise.
It cut through the sound waves like a blade through water, absorbing the vibrations as it passed.
The discordant hum that had filled the arena began to fade, swallowed by the arrow’s trajectory.
Kalen’s eyes widened to an impossible degree, his pupils vibrating with the sheer intensity of the realization that his defensive song had been bypassed.
"What—" he started to stammer, his arrogant composure crumbling into frantic confusion as the projectile blurred toward him.
The arrow struck his shoulder with a sickening, wet thud, the impact anchoring him to the spot as it tore through muscle and bone.
And then, the arena plummeted into a profound, suffocating silence.
It was not merely the silence of a paused crowd or the tense expectation of a held breath; it was an absolute, ontological void.
It felt as if the very concept of sound had been erased from the fabric of existence, leaving a hollow vacuum where the chaotic roar of the battle should have been.
Kalen opened his mouth wide, his throat raw and straining, attempting to shout a command or a curse into the stillness. Yet, despite his desperate exertion, no words came out.
The air around him refused to carry the vibration of his protest, swallowing the sound before it could even leave his lips as the Void influence claimed the space.
The sonic energy around him had been consumed, leaving him with nothing but the physical wound in his shoulder.
The sheer agony radiating from his mangled shoulder proved too much for his equilibrium; Kalen’s knees buckled under the weight of the shock, sending him crashing onto the cold, unforgiving stone of the arena floor.
He gasped, his fingers trembling as they clamped tightly around the feathered shaft of the arrow buried deep within his flesh, his face pale and contorted in a mask of sheer physical torment.
For three heartbeats, the world remained suspended in that haunting, artificial vacuum, the stillness weighing heavy upon the lungs of every spectator.
Time seemed to stagnate, frozen between the moment of impact and the inevitable collapse of his arrogance.
Then, the dam broke.
The unnatural suppression of sound shattered, and the arena transformed into a thunderous storm of chaotic noise.
Deafening roar erupted from the thousands of cultivators in the stands, their voices surging forward like a tidal wave of unbridled adrenaline and disbelief.
Mio opened her eyes and lowered her bow. She walked across the arena platform, her footsteps making no sound on the stone.
The void arrow’s effect was still lingering, dampening all noise within a certain radius.
She stopped in front of Kalen and looked down at him.
"Sound is powerful," she said, her voice carrying clearly in the absence of ambient noise. "But the void doesn’t hear sound. It eats it."
Kalen stared at her, defeat written across his face.
Elder Alder cleared his throat, the sound startlingly loud as the silence began to fade. "The winner is Mio Nightrider!"
Mio turned and walked back toward the VIP gallery, her ponytail swaying with each step.
The crowd cheered her name, but she only had eyes for one person.
She leaped off the platform and landed in front of Damon, her chest heaving with exertion and excitement.
"I did it," she said, grinning. "Just like you taught me."
Damon reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her face. "You did well. You trusted yourself."
"I trusted you," she corrected. "Your words were the only thing I could hear in all that noise."
Alena watched the exchange with sharp, analytical eyes. She had seen countless techniques in her years at the sect. But she had never seen anything like that.
A void arrow that consumed sound itself.
She looked at Damon with new respect. Whatever he was teaching these women, it went far beyond normal cultivation.
"Junior Brother Damon," she said, her voice carefully neutral.
"I think I understand now why the Nightrider sisters advanced so quickly."
Damon turned to her, one eyebrow raised. "Oh?"
"They’re not just learning from you. They’re evolving because of you."
Alena’s purple eyes met his golden ones, and for a moment, something passed between them. A recognition. An understanding.
"Perhaps," she said softly, "I’d like to learn from you as well."
Damon’s smile widened, slow and predatory.
"We’ll see, Alena Terra. We’ll see."
