Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Mio vs Kalen [1]

Alena Terra stepped off the arena platform, her staff tapping against the stone as she moved through the crowd.

She bypassed the alchemist section entirely, her gaze fixed on the VIP gallery where Damon stood with Ariel, Mio, Mia, and Neko.

Damon watched her approach with mild interest.

His Incubus Celestial Eyes had already catalogued her Earth Spirit Realm cultivation and her alchemy-focused bloodline.

But her decision to seek him out rather than her peers told him something else entirely.

She stopped at the edge of his section and bowed politely. "Senior Brother Damon. May I join you for the remaining matches?"

Ariel raised an eyebrow. Mio and Mia exchanged glances.

Damon gestured to the empty seat beside him. "Sit."

Alena settled into the seat with practiced grace, her staff resting across her knees. She kept her eyes forward, watching the arena where the next match was being prepared.

"I’ve heard interesting things about you," she said.

"The outer disciple who killed Jack Frostborn with a single strike. The one who became Elder Selene’s direct disciple."

"Rumors travel fast," Damon replied.

"They do when they involve someone who shouldn’t exist." Alena turned her head slightly, studying his profile.

"You appeared six months ago with nothing. Now you’re at the Earth Spirit Realm with techniques that rival core disciples who’ve trained for decades."

Damon smiled but didn’t answer.

Alena’s gaze drifted to Mio and Mia, who stood on Damon’s other side.

"And the Nightrider twins. They were stuck at the Earth Spirit Realm Fourth Level for two years. Now they’re both at the Ninth Level. That kind of advancement doesn’t happen naturally."

Mio stiffened. Mia’s hand drifted toward her dagger.

"Are you accusing me of something?" Damon asked, his tone light.

"Not at all." Alena shook her head.

"I’m curious. As an alchemist, I understand the value of rare resources. But even the best pills can’t produce results like that without a foundation to build on."

She paused, her purple eyes meeting his golden ones.

"Unless there’s something else at work."

Damon held her gaze for a long moment. The air between them grew heavy, charged with unspoken tension.

"Everyone has their secrets," he said finally. "Even alchemists."

Alena’s lips curved into a small, knowing smile. "Fair enough."

She turned her attention back to the arena as Elder Alder’s voice rang out across the coliseum.

"Match Five: Mio Nightrider versus Kalen Whisperwind!"

The crowd stirred with renewed interest. Kaelen Whisperwind was a name that carried weight in the sect.

A sound attribute cultivator from the Whisperwind family, known for their mastery of sonic techniques that could shatter steel and disrupt spiritual energy alike.

Mio stepped forward, her ponytail swaying with each confident stride. She glanced back at Damon, who gave her a slight nod.

"Show them what you’ve learned," he said.

Mio grinned and leaped onto the arena platform.

Her opponent was already waiting. Kalen Whisperwind was a lean man in his late twenties, dressed in flowing grey robes that seemed to ripple even when there was no wind.

His ears were slightly pointed, a family trait that enhanced his sensitivity to sound frequencies.

"Mio Nightrider," he said, his voice carrying a strange harmonic quality that made it seem to come from everywhere at once.

"I’ve heard you’re quite skilled with that bow of yours."

"And I’ve heard you talk too much," Mio replied.

Kalen’s smile didn’t waver. "Let’s see if your arrows can fly through silence."

Elder Alder raised his hand. "Begin!"

The moment the words left his mouth, Kalen stomped his foot.

A wave of visible distortion rippled outward from his position, carrying a low, resonant hum that vibrated through the very air.

The sound waves struck Mio like a physical force, making her stagger.

She gritted her teeth and nocked an arrow. But as she drew the bowstring, the vibrations intensified.

Her spiritual energy flickered, disrupted by the constant assault on her senses.

The arrow she fired went wide, embedding itself in the arena barrier.

Kalen laughed.

"Sound is the foundation of all things. It breaks down barriers, disrupts focus, and shatters concentration. How can you aim when you can’t even think straight?"

He raised his hand and snapped his fingers.

The sound that followed was not a simple snap. It was a sharp, piercing crack that exploded directly inside Mio’s skull.

She cried out, clutching her ears as the noise reverberated through her brain.

The crowd winced. Even from the stands, the sonic attack was uncomfortable.

Ariel leaned forward. "Mio’s in trouble. Sound attribute cultivators are rare, and their techniques bypass normal defenses."

Damon’s gaze remained fixed upon the vibrating chaos of the arena, his expression unmarred by the slightest hint of concern.

"Don’t underestimate her," he murmured, his voice cutting through the localized sonic turbulence with the steady, chilling calm of a master observer.

"She will adapt, and she will do it on her own terms."

Ariel glanced at him, her brow furrowed in genuine distress as she wrung her slender fingers together.

The air around the arena was thick with a discordant, shivering tension.

"But how could she possibly find an opening in this?" she protested, her voice laced with anxiety.

"The vibrations are absolute. Look at her—she can’t even hear herself think anymore, let alone coordinate her movements."

Damon’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile, the golden flecks in his eyes catching the light with a predatory gleam.

"She is a warrior, not a scholar," he replied, his tone patient, as if he were explaining a fundamental law of the universe.

"She does not need the cold, logical pathways of thought to find her rhythm. She simply needs to feel the pulse beneath the noise."

Out on the blood-stained stone of the arena, Mio was currently struggling to maintain her center of gravity.

Each sonic assault felt like a blow to her spirit, yet amidst the dizzying, nauseating bombardment, her eyes began to sharpen, searching for the truth hidden within the frequency.

Every step she took sent ripples of sound through the ground, making her footing unstable. Every breath she drew carried vibrations that rattled her lungs.

Kalen advanced slowly, his fingers dancing through the air like a conductor leading an orchestra. Each gesture produced a different frequency, layering sound upon sound until the entire arena hummed with discordant energy.

"Give up," Kalen said. "You can’t fight what you can’t hear coming."
