Chapter 43: Nothing in this accursed world can be believed
After a few moments, Roselina attempted to sit upon the sofa with all the composure she could muster, fighting hard not to show any signs of trembling before this terrifying entity.
She kept staring at the floor for a long time with a blank, shocked gaze, to the extent that Amelia began to wonder out loud with curiosity whether there was buried gold beneath the carpet that her aunt was searching for!
An absolute silence loomed over the entire lounge, while the mother and daughter exchanged brief glances, as though they were communicating through visual telepathy to agree upon the best and swiftest method to explain this complex situation to this lady who was on the verge of losing her sanity.
Amidst this stillness, Roselina suddenly let out a light, cynical laugh, raising her hand to cover her face in utter helplessness.
"I... I admit absolute defeat..."
She said it while continuing to laugh with a slight hysteria mixed with pure shock.
Lucy looked at her with a sigh and said, "Alright, we will explain everything to you now. Are you ready to listen?"
Yet Roselina was not in a mental state that allowed for a hundred percent logical comprehension. It appeared that the wires of her thoughts had become completely entangled, so she replied, murmuring, "An explanation? Haha... I do not need any explanation, for the pipeline of my thoughts is beginning to comprehend now! I have always wondered and said to myself: How could someone from the ancient Oster lineage live such a lazy lifestyle and reap his wealth through sheer, blind luck? But now I understand perfectly... The man capable of fathering a daughter with the Empress of Blood herself can simply do anything in this universe!"
Lucy grew weary of this dramatic way of speaking, and snapped in annoyance, "Hey! Do not act as though you have never known me before! I lived with you in this castle and I am Maxi as well, but that was merely an illusion magic. Have you forgotten that so quickly? We played cards together and spoke at great length!"
This additional piece of information was akin to a thunderbolt that almost caused Roselina to faint and lose consciousness once more. However, Lucy immediately took the initiative, utilizing a highly freezing water spell that manifested in the air and splashed Roselina’s face, causing her to jump and revive rapidly.
"Yes! Yes! I am here... I am awake!" Roselina cried out, wiping the water from her face in sheer panic.
Lucy placed her hand over her forehead, feeling a genuine sense of helplessness from this woman’s temperament. Yet she took a deep breath and attempted to explain seriously, "The situation is far more complex than you can possibly conceive... Can you listen to me now without fainting again? Otherwise..."
At that exact moment, Lucy manifested a brief, minuscule glimpse of her terrifying, dominant aura, causing the oxygen to be vacuumed from the room. Roselina trembled entirely, nodding her head with extreme velocity, her eyes pooling with tears as though she were on the verge of weeping from sheer terror.
Lucy exhaled to suppress her aura, and began trying to formulate the truth, "In reality, I do not know precisely where to begin the explanation... But the most critical matter here, which you must know, is that there is a person—or some entity—that continuously threatens the life of your brother, Cain. And all of this is solely to restrain my power, for complex reasons I cannot explain to you right now."
Lucy’s features assumed absolute gravity and a stern tone as she spoke. Roselina knitted her brows as she listened. They threaten the life of my lazy brother just to restrain the Empress of Blood? How could such a thing even occur in the first place? And how did the fate of her brother become bound to a cosmic entity like her?
However, Lucy did not grant her consciousness an opportunity to drown in deep thought for long, and continued, "I know you won’t comprehend the details, but there is a malicious and wicked entity that orchestrated a vile plot against me and Cain five years ago. It drugged him using a specific wine, and made him come to the location where I was sheltering at the time, exploiting the fact that I had suffered a sudden ambush with a frost-type poison that weakened my powers then."
The complexity and astonishment intensified upon Roselina’s face from these words, and she was on the verge of doubting that the entire tale was a figment of imagination. Yet her noble mind corrected the matter: What would the Empress of Blood stand to gain by attempting to deceive or convince an insignificant figure like me? Her mind summarized the conclusion that Lucy was being entirely truthful with her, even if the scenario appeared impossible and unbelievable at first.
Lucy completed her words, her eyes drifting into the memory, "This vile conspiracy was orchestrated by it five years ago... making us be together on a night when Cain was completely drugged and unconscious, while I was in a state of weakness where I could not resist..."
Roselina’s lip trembled while she fought hard to digest this rapid succession of information without her small mind collapsing.
At that exact moment, her noble thinking guided her to a terrifying conclusion: If Lucy is here now, and she was carrying Cain over her shoulder completely unconscious before I fainted... then this surely means she has come to exact vengeance tonight upon my foolish brother who was forced to do that to her! A sweeping fear for Cain seized her, and she believed that this useless brother of hers had entangled the family in a catastrophe due to that night, despite his continuous pretense of being a kind and gentle person.
Roselina stepped forward helplessly and spoke in a pleading tone, "Lady Lucy... please, excuse my foolish brother for his action and his involvement in this matter... He is a complete fool and an idiot who does not comprehend the consequences of things! You can demand any compensation you desire—monetary compensation, lands, or anything—and I shall fulfill it to you immediately on behalf of the family, just spare his life!"
For the little Amelia, this was the first time she was listening to the details of that night, discovering that her father, Cain, was somehow forced into this act with her mother under the influence of the drug. Her small mind was bewildered for a moment: Should she be thankful and grateful for that coincidence, or loathe and hate that orchestration? Yet she swiftly brushed the negative thoughts from her head; she would certainly not be vile or selfish enough to think in such a manner. Considering her mother’s feelings and protecting her always came first, even if it were at the expense of her own interests or personal desires.
As for Lucy, she was shocked by Roselina’s conclusion and countered directly in a flustered and surprised tone, "No... no! Of course not! I do not want any compensation, nor have I come for revenge... You have understood the matter entirely wrong!"
Roselina looked directly into Lucy’s eyes and the lines of her face, trying to read her body language and believe what her ears were hearing.
Lucy’s cheeks flushed slightly red, and she looked aside, murmuring the reality of her emotions, "In truth... I have loved Cain for a very long time... and in all honesty... I was capable of resisting him back then by virtue of my power, but... but I did not do so of my own choice, and I let him do exactly as he wished without any objection... And also..."
SLAP!...
SLAP!...
SLAP!...
The thread of Lucy’s words was severed by the sound of successive slaps! Roselina was sitting upon the sofa, delivering powerful slaps to her own cheeks, left and right. But the gravest problem... was that she felt genuine pain with every single slap!
SLAP!...
Roselina delivered another powerful slap to herself, shrieking in absolute despair as tears of shock streamed from her eyes, "Damn it!... Damn it, why can’t I wake up from this accursed dream-nightmare even now?!"
