Chapter 424: Chapter 424: He’s Easy to Fool
The imp’s voice suddenly sounded in Qiao Xixi’s mind.
"Host, a beast guard is flying this way."
Qiao Xixi quickly looked up at the sky but couldn’t see anything. Still, she knew the information from the imp wouldn’t be wrong.
"Sunxiao, the system says a beast guard is flying over. Let’s hide in the water for now."
It was best to avoid a confrontation before they reached the Watchtower.
"Alright."
Hearing Qiao Xixi, Jin Ling and the others slowly gathered around her before sinking into the water a moment later.
Xijing pointed a finger in the water, and the river parted automatically.
Yun Qiong quickly approached their location. He scanned the water’s surface with sharp eyes but didn’t spot anything unusual.
This was the area where the Water Snake Beast usually roamed. He circled the area once and let out a long cry into the sky. A moment later, the water churned, and the corpse of the Water Snake Beast slowly floated to the surface, held up by fish-beasts.
Yun Qiong lowered his altitude, intending to land on the Water Snake Beast’s corpse. But he descended too quickly and lost his footing, tumbling straight into the water.
"What a pain."
Finally steadying himself on the Water Snake Beast’s corpse, Yun Qiong examined the wounds on its body.
"The wounds don’t look like they were left by a monster."
After confirming his suspicion, Yun Qiong shot back into the sky. He didn’t rush back, instead patrolling back and forth along the main route to the Watchtower.
Qiao Xixi’s group remained submerged, not even daring to use their sea pearls for fear that Yun Qiong would notice something amiss.
"Little Imp, has that flying beast guard left?"
"Not yet, Host. He’s still here."
Qiao Xixi frowned. ’This beast guard is too vigilant.’
"And a beast guard from the Wing Clan."
"Yes, Host. And there aren’t just one, but two of them. This one is called Yun Qiong. He has some connection to the Holy Priest, but don’t you worry, Host. He’s the easiest one to deal with among all the beast guards."
"Oh? Why do you say that?"
"Because he’s easy to fool."
Qiao Xixi: ???
Yun Qiong circled around many times but found nothing out of the ordinary. "Could it be... they’re all hiding in the water?"
The more Yun Qiong thought about it, the more likely it seemed.
He quickly turned and flew back to the Watchtower.
Seeing him return, Chi Yan quickly took several steps back to avoid getting hit by his flapping wings.
"Where’s Canglan?"
Just as he finished speaking, ripples spread through the water behind him, and Canglan, with his long, light purple hair, emerged from the water.
"What is it?" he asked, his expression blank.
Hearing his voice, Yun Qiong turned and walked over to him, looking down at him condescendingly.
"Canglan, you’re done for."
Canglan: ...
"Your little pet, the Water Snake Beast, died and you didn’t even know it! I had to go and check for you. Do you have any idea that when it died..."
"Shut up. Get to the point."
"Someone broke in. I didn’t see them while I was flying, so they’re most likely hiding in the water."
Canglan’s brow didn’t even twitch. "Understood."
Yun Qiong was dissatisfied. "You’re the one guarding the water, yet you didn’t even notice when people broke in..."
Before he could finish, Canglan turned and sank back into the water.
"Hey! Do you have any manners, you damn fish!"
Yun Qiong turned to complain to Chi Yan, but when he looked back, Chi Yan was nowhere to be seen.
"One by one... None of them have the same beastly spirit as Qiao Yi!"
Qiao Xixi and her group advanced quickly through the water, but Xijing soon noticed something strange. The number of fish-beasts swimming near them had suddenly increased.
They were just ordinary fish-beasts and posed no threat, but it was strange for them to suddenly surround and follow the group.
Xijing slowly opened his mouth, and a beautiful melody flowed out.
Upon hearing it, the fish-beasts all flicked their tails and swam away in other directions.
Submerged in the water, the light purple fins on Canglan’s face twitched. "So they really are in the water. Let me see who is so bold."
Canglan shot through the water like an arrow, heading toward Xijing’s group.
Before long, he saw Xijing.
The soft, lustrous glow of a sea pearl illuminated Canglan’s features. His light purple eyes fell coldly upon Xijing.
"Intruder."
A faint smile touched Xijing’s lips. "I didn’t expect to find a merman among the beast guards in the Watchtower."
Canglan sneered and charged at Xijing.
Xijing met him without showing any weakness.
The two figures collided like arrows, the massive impact creating a circular shockwave in the water.
Qiao Xixi, who had already split from Xijing and was heading toward the Watchtower from another direction, felt the powerful tremor in the water and looked back worriedly in the direction where Xijing had stayed behind.
Just moments before, Xijing had sensed something was wrong and insisted on splitting from the group. He said the Watchtower had an aquatic beast guard, and he would stay behind to hold him off. This would buy them time to reach the Watchtower.
At first, Qiao Xixi had refused. She had seen how powerful the beast guards were and didn’t think Xijing could face one alone. But Xijing was insistent, and only after Feiyan and the others spoke up did Qiao Xixi reluctantly leave, filled with worry.
"Hurry."
Sunxiao and the others picked up their pace.
In the darkness, Qiao Xixi constantly asked the imp about Xijing’s situation.
"Don’t worry, Host. The beast guards won’t easily kill a powerful beastman."
"Why not?"
"Because they can be used to kill more of the monsters in the forest, of course."
"I don’t get it. If they need monsters killed, why don’t they just do it themselves?"
"Ah, Host, those monsters... they’re not as easy to deal with as you think. You... you’ll understand soon enough."
Qiao Xixi didn’t want to get distracted with monsters right now. All she wanted was to rescue her father as soon as possible.
"We’re here, Host."
Qiao Xixi came back to her senses as Sunxiao and the others slowly surfaced.
Before them was a large island, on which stood a structure built from massive stones.
The building was huge and tall. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call it a tower, but it looked completely different from any tower she had ever imagined.
But that wasn’t important.
They came ashore silently.
Just as Qiao Xixi thought they had gone undetected, Yun Qiong was already watching their every move.
"Tsk, Canglan’s not so great after all. He couldn’t even stop them. And... there’s a female??"
Yun Qiong turned into a black mist and appeared behind Lei Lie.
"You want them, or should I take them?"
"How many?"
"Four males, one female."
Lei Lie frowned. "A female?"
"Yeah. Hiss... Say, you don’t think they’re running from monsters and came here seeking protection, do you?"
Lei Lie’s bull-like eyes widened as he stared at Yun Qiong in shock.
Yun Qiong blinked. "You think so, too?"
Lei Lie’s eye twitched. "I’ll go. You go find Chi Yan."
"Oh."
Qiao Xixi’s group stared at the enormous structure. It was like a fortress of solid steel, without even an entrance door!
"Little Imp, where’s the entrance?"
"Everywhere is an entrance?"
Qiao Xixi looked at the stone wall, which didn’t have a single crack. "Are you messing with me?"
"Host, I’m not tricking you. There’s no door to walk through. You have to fly in."
"Fly? How... how do we fly...?"
The words had barely left Qiao Xixi’s mouth when a tall, burly figure suddenly leaped down from the high stone wall. He kicked off the wall on his way down for momentum before landing steadily in front of them.
The force of his landing was so great that the ground beneath their feet trembled...
"Well, see? You fly just like that."
