Chapter 408: Chapter 408: Getting Closer and Closer
When a female goes into heat, her body emits a special scent that attracts nearby males, stimulating them until they go into heat as well...
Qiao Xixi looked at Kunlin, who was practically on top of her. She shot to her feet and splashed the Spiritual Spring water in her hand directly onto his face.
"Kunlin, snap out of it! I’m leaving now."
As Qiao Xixi spoke, she turned to leave the tree hollow, but Kunlin was a step ahead of her. He grabbed her hand and pulled her back.
Qiao Xixi’s expression darkened. She struggled, but couldn’t break free from his grip.
"Kunlin!"
Kunlin stared at Qiao Xixi, all his primal, innermost desires erupting at once. He held her hand tightly, trying to pull her into an embrace, but she braced her hands against his chest, keeping him from getting any closer.
"Xixi, I have feelings for you. Let me be your beastman, please?"
Only when his emotions were spiraling out of control could he truly follow his heart and speak these words.
Qiao Xixi frowned. "The heat is controlling your emotions. Kunlin, you’re Huang Ying’s beastman, and you have Yaya. Don’t be impulsive. Just calm down."
While he was distracted by her words, Qiao Xixi suddenly drew a bone knife and jabbed his ribs with the hilt. Kunlin grunted in pain and his hand fell away.
Once free, Qiao Xixi turned and bolted from the tree hollow.
Kunlin leaned back against the inside of the tree hollow, watching her figure retreat as he shook his head forcefully.
A tempting voice suddenly whispered in his ear. "The female you desire is right there. Why aren’t you going after her? Go on. She’s in heat. If you mate with her and she bears your cub, how could she possibly reject you then?"
The heat coursing through his body nearly drove Kunlin mad. He clenched his fists and gritted his teeth. "Why won’t she accept me? Why!"
"Why waste time on useless thoughts? Go after her, and she’ll be yours. If you miss this chance, you’ll never get another one. Go, quickly."
A puff of white smoke dissipated before Kunlin’s eyes. As he stared at Qiao Xixi’s retreating back, a dark red glint flashed in his eyes. He hesitated no longer and charged out.
Qiao Xixi wasn’t running blindly; she was looking at her map’s coordinates. She had realized from the start that their current location wasn’t too far from the Watchtower. Since she had to run anyway, she might as well head directly for the Watchtower and wait for Jin Ling and the others there.
"Xixi, don’t run!"
Kunlin flapped his wings and gave chase.
"Yes, that’s it! Chase her down! Mate with her!"
Hearing the commotion behind her, Qiao Xixi formed a hand seal. "Wind, rise!"
The wind rose at her feet, lifting her into the air.
But just as she was airborne, she felt a powerful gust of wind from behind. Kunlin had caught up and swiftly wrapped his arms around her.
"Kunlin!"
"Xixi, I’m going to mate with you!"
Qiao Xixi was already miserable, her body uncontrollably craving the touch of a male. Now, with Kunlin holding her by force, her body registered his potent male presence, and the heat she had suppressed with the spring water flared up again, stronger than before.
"Kunlin, let me go!"
Far from letting go, Kunlin held her even tighter. He wove through the forest at high speed. ’He’s looking for a place to lie down with me!’
Qiao Xixi was furious. She began muttering an incantation under her breath.
The dewdrops on the leaves rapidly coalesced.
"Fire."
The water droplets shot toward Kunlin from behind.
"Ngh!"
As the droplets struck him, Kunlin grunted. Qiao Xixi seized the chance to tighten her grip on her bone knife and slash his hand.
Kunlin cried out in pain and released her, sending Qiao Xixi plummeting downward.
She was about to use the wind to break her fall when she realized there was water below. ’Perfect,’ she thought. ’A cold plunge should sober both of us up.’
SPLASH!
Qiao Xixi plunged into the water.
The icy water instantly enveloped her, significantly dampening the heat coursing through her body.
Seeing Qiao Xixi fall into the water, Kunlin dove in after her without a second thought.
As he submerged into the river, a sliver of his reason returned. He saw Qiao Xixi’s figure being swept ahead by the current and anxiously tried to follow.
"Xixi, be careful!"
Qiao Xixi could have used her Water Avoidance skill, but she chose not to. The cold water was helping her stay clear-headed.
She glanced back and saw that some clarity had returned to Kunlin’s eyes, but she had no intention of stopping.
The current was swift, and she was quickly swept far ahead. After choking on several mouthfuls of water, Qiao Xixi was forced to use her Water Avoidance skill.
She looked back, but Kunlin had vanished.
Her expression shifted. ’Kunlin has been acting too strangely today. Keeping him around is like carrying a ticking time bomb. But from a partner’s perspective... I can’t just watch him drown. I’m not that cruel.’
After a moment’s thought, she turned back, taking out an illuminating sea pearl to light up the water around her.
The water was pitch-black, with only the small area around the sea pearl illuminated. ’How am I supposed to find Kunlin in this?’
Suddenly, a force erupted from below, forcefully dragging her down into the depths.
She struggled to use her skills in the water and was quickly pulled down by the force. But then, to her surprise, she saw Kunlin.
’No wonder I couldn’t find him anywhere. He must have been dragged down by this force, too.’
She used the pull of the current to get to Kunlin’s side and quickly pulled him into her Water Avoidance bubble. She felt for his pulse and, after confirming he was alive, decided not to wake him, lest he lose control again.
Just as Qiao Xixi was wondering how to get back to the surface, the pull from below suddenly intensified, sucking them into an underwater vortex.
The world started spinning around Qiao Xixi. All she could do was grab a handful of Kunlin’s hair to keep him from being swept away.
After an unknown amount of time, they were finally spat out. The spinning slowly stopped, and as her body went limp, she began to float upward.
SPLASH!
Qiao Xixi broke the surface, gasping for air. Spotting a shore not far away, she began swimming toward it, pulling Kunlin along.
After hauling him onto the shore with great effort, Qiao Xixi collapsed onto the ground, utterly exhausted.
"Sprite, where the hell are we?"
"Host, this is the Heavenly Pool. It’s the periphery of the Watchtower. If you think of the Watchtower as a castle, then the Heavenly Pool is its moat. It’s just... absurdly large."
Qiao Xixi felt the Sprite’s description wasn’t entirely accurate, since there was clearly a forest behind her. But it was right about one thing—the moat was absurdly large. She couldn’t see the Watchtower anywhere.
After chugging a large amount of Spiritual Spring water, Qiao Xixi felt much of her strength return. However, after frequently using abilities like the Wind Control Skill, her body was still left with a deep sense of depletion, a void that cried out to be filled with energy.
Qiao Xixi forced herself to her feet and scanned her surroundings. She didn’t notice that, just as she turned her back, a dark, reddish-black mist slowly slithered into Kunlin’s body.
