Chapter 407: Chapter 407: Why Did You Do That?
Qiao Xixi leaped straight off of Kunlin’s back.
Startled, Kunlin twisted his body to one side and chased after her.
"Xixi, be careful!"
The wind beneath her feet caught her, allowing Qiao Xixi to dodge Kunlin and accelerate toward the spot where Jin Ling had fallen.
But when she arrived back over the wetland, there was no sign of Jin Ling anywhere.
"Jin Ling! Jin Ling!"
Qiao Xixi immediately opened her map to check his location. Jin Ling’s icon was lit up, and its position was very close to hers, meaning he was still here.
"Jin Ling."
Qiao Xixi circled above the location of his icon but couldn’t find any sign of him. She had no choice but to land on a large tree for the time being, her eyes fixed on the wetland below.
’If something had happened to Jin Ling, his icon wouldn’t be lit. He must be trying to find a way to escape right now.’
Kunlin caught up and landed beside Qiao Xixi. The moment he steadied himself, he was met with her cold glare.
"Why did you do that?"
Faced with Qiao Xixi’s accusation, Kunlin froze for a moment. "Xixi, didn’t you tell me to kill them?"
Now it was Qiao Xixi’s turn to be dumbfounded. "Who? Who did I tell you to kill?"
Seeing that her shocked expression didn’t seem fake, Kunlin’s face instantly turned ice-cold.
When he didn’t answer, Qiao Xixi’s brow furrowed even tighter. "Kunlin, do you have any idea what you’re saying?"
Kunlin stared directly at her. "Have you forgotten what you said to me? Just now, over by the spring..."
Qiao Xixi was now certain that Kunlin must have been bewitched by a monster. Most likely, the monster had taken on her appearance to trick him.
"No, I..."
"Watch out!"
Before Qiao Xixi could finish, a swarm of bee-beasts attacked her. Kunlin immediately pulled her into the sky to dodge them.
Qiao Xixi’s attention was also drawn to the bee-beasts. She formed a hand seal.
"Water."
The water from the wetland rose into the air.
"Shoot."
Droplets of water shot rapidly toward the bee-beasts.
"Xixi, we need to get out of here quickly! The stingers on these bee-beasts are poisonous. It’ll be trouble if we get hit."
Having not found Jin Ling, Qiao Xixi didn’t want to leave. But before she could voice her refusal, another large swarm of bee-beasts flew toward them.
"Water."
"Shoot!"
The bee-beasts fell like raindrops, but even so, as soon as one wave dropped, another quickly emerged from behind.
"These damn things, where in the world are they coming from!"
"Xixi, we should leave first."
Looking at the bee-beasts that swarmed like a plague of locusts, Qiao Xixi could only agree to leave for now. She would come back to find Jin Ling after they were gone.
"Let’s go."
Qiao Xixi jumped onto Kunlin’s back. He carried her and shot toward the sky, flying to another mountain peak at nearly his top speed.
Seeing him fly so fast, Qiao Xixi just assumed he was trying to evade the pursuing bee-beasts.
By the time Kunlin landed on the ground with Qiao Xixi, the sky had already grown dark.
Kunlin found a large tree hollow.
"Xixi, let’s rest here for the night."
Qiao Xixi snapped back to her senses and looked at the towering tree before them. A large hollow had been carved out beneath its thick roots. Judging from the entrance, the hollow must have been made a long time ago, as its edges had regrown to become smooth and rounded.
Qiao Xixi had been watching Jin Ling’s location on her map. She realized she was now a great distance away from them; she had no idea where Kunlin had flown.
But to her relief, Jin Ling’s coordinates were moving at a steady pace. This at least indicated that he wasn’t in combat and was safe.
A large hand suddenly fell upon her waist. Startled, Qiao Xixi instinctively pushed it away.
Kunlin glanced at his rejected hand, a strange glint flashing in the depths of his eyes.
Thinking about what happened earlier, Qiao Xixi’s expression darkened.
"Kunlin, back at the wetland... did you intentionally try to throw us off?"
Kunlin didn’t deny it. "You told me to."
"I never said anything about hurting us. That was all an illusion created by the monster."
Kunlin clenched his fists, but he quickly relaxed them. He simply moved past Qiao Xixi and began to climb the tree.
"You can sleep in the hollow tonight. I’ll stand guard outside."
Qiao Xixi was displeased with Kunlin’s behavior, but she remembered that he had indeed helped them quite a bit on their journey. He had only made the wrong decision because he was bewitched by the monster, so she decided not to press the issue for now.
Still, it made her wary of Kunlin. She didn’t know what the monster had told him, but he seemed to believe its words without a doubt. And whenever she tried to explain, his expression was full of rejection.
Therefore, Qiao Xixi decided not to waste any more words. Once morning came, she would find a way to get back to Jin Ling and the others.
Although Kunlin was perched on the tree, he was constantly paying attention to the situation inside the hollow.
He knew Qiao Xixi wasn’t asleep. He didn’t know what she was thinking. ’Is she thinking about those beast-husbands of hers?’
At this thought, the cold aura radiating from Kunlin grew even more intense.
The night deepened. The surroundings became so quiet that only the sound of their breathing remained.
Qiao Xixi lay on a bed of dry branches, not the least bit sleepy. She periodically opened her map to check the location of Jin Ling and the others.
She couldn’t fall asleep without them by her side.
"Sprite, are Jin Ling and the others all right?"
"Host, you can see their icons on the map. As long as the icons are lit, their lives are not in danger."
She knew that, of course, but she was worried and had to ask for extra reassurance.
Qiao Xixi turned over, and a faint fragrance suddenly drifted to her nose. It was like the fresh, elegant scent of flowers.
But she quickly sat up, instantly on alert.
’Where the hell would a flower scent be coming from in the middle of the night?’
She quickly covered her nose and mouth, but she was a step too late.
A wave of heat suddenly surged through her body. Qiao Xixi knew exactly what was happening.
She was going into heat!
She had gone into heat once before after arriving in this world of beastmen. During that time, she had looked at Jin Ling and the others like a wolf staring at meat. That experience had taught her just how terrifying the heat cycle could be—it was a truly irrational, physical urge!
"Sprite, I’m going into heat! Is there any medicine in my storage space that can suppress it?"
"Uh, going into heat is a natural biological process for beastmen, Host. It’s not an illness, so there’s no medicine for it. However, you could try drinking some Spiritual Spring water to cool your blood and lower your body temperature?"
Qiao Xixi shot a quick glance at Kunlin. After confirming he wasn’t looking at her, she hastily took a bag of Spiritual Spring water from her storage space and chugged it down.
After downing a large waterskin of Spiritual Spring water, the burning heat in her body subsided slightly.
But damn it, she soon heard heavy breathing coming from the tree above.
The breathing had originally been some distance away, but at some point, the sound had moved right next to her ear.
Qiao Xixi’s eyes widened in shock. She turned her head and saw Kunlin right in front of her, his gaze so full of raw, undisguised desire that it made her heart pound with fear.
