Chapter 1446: Biting
Even Eccar, Aesa, and Sylven, who remained on the ground, could feel the overwhelming aura of power radiating from Nyssara’s body.
"She changed again," Sylven said, his tone stiff as he struggled to keep his fear from showing.
Eccar and Aesa said nothing. They were too frozen to speak.
"Isn’t this a violation of the oath?" Aesa finally asked. "Shouldn’t she be suffering some kind of backlash?"
"She should be," Eccar replied. "I don’t know how this oath actually works."
Eccar did not voice everything that was on his mind. He kept thinking about how Erend could possibly survive all of this. Yet somehow, he had a feeling that Erend’s power, amplified by the Black Rage, was reaching a level of strength they had never witnessed before.
He was deeply worried about Erend. He remembered what the Ashen Tempest Dragon had said about the Black Rage and how it could eventually transform a Dragonborn into an evil being.
But in their current situation, how could they save Erend while also defeating Nyssara?
"No. It can’t be like this," Eccar thought. "I can’t let Erend continue like this, or he’ll fall into a place where he can never return. But we also have to defeat Nyssara."
"Let’s recuperate here for a moment," Eccar said to Aesa and Sylven. "Once we’ve recovered some of our strength, we have to rejoin the battle."
Aesa and Sylven had no better solution to offer. They silently agreed with his suggestion. They acknowledged their own weakness at that moment. They could do nothing to help and could only allow Erend to shoulder the burden of this battle alone.
—
Nyssara stared at Erend. She immediately realized this Dragonborn had become different from before. That black lightning was not natural lightning, not even for a Dragonborn.
His eyes looked wild and contained nothing but the desire for destruction and killing. Even from this distance, she could feel it. It was the sign of something she could no longer underestimate.
Without wasting another moment, Nyssara lunged at Erend.
But Erend had already made the same decision. He charged toward her first.
His speed now far surpassed hers. Erend reached Nyssara in the blink of an eye while leaving behind a trail of black lightning where darkness overwhelmingly dominated the remaining blue and white currents.
The two collided once again.
The impact released an enormous shockwave of Magic that cracked the earth below and shook the sky above.
Lightning clashed against countless appendages. Erend moved around Nyssara with blinding speed, disappearing and reappearing from different directions as he slashed with his claws and unleashed relentless lightning bolts. The attacks came so quickly that Nyssara struggled to follow his movements. She barely managed to react before another assault struck from a different angle, forcing her onto the defensive.
Then Erend caught one of Nyssara’s appendages. He bit down with overwhelming force.
CRACK!
The appendage snapped apart beneath his jaws. Without hesitation or thought, Erend swallowed the severed piece through pure instinct alone.
Nyssara’s eyes widened in alarm. She immediately abandoned the idea of attacking from a distance.
Instead, she rushed directly toward Erend, deciding to fight him herself rather than relying on her appendages.
She closed the distance and drove her clawed hand across Erend’s chest.
SLASH!
Dark blood burst into the air as deep wounds spread across his scales. With the same motion, she struck one of his horns.
CRACK!
The horn shattered apart. But Erend did not react. It was as though pain had completely abandoned him.
He existed for only one purpose now, to keep fighting. Erend suddenly opened his jaws wide and bit directly into Nyssara’s shoulder.
Nyssara let out a piercing scream.
With one savage pull, Erend tore away a large chunk of her shoulder before swallowing it immediately.
Nyssara instantly retreated. The torn shoulder rapidly regenerated as dark energy flowed through the wound.
Without giving Erend another opportunity to close the distance, she unleashed a barrage of appendages, forcing him away from her once again.
"What is he doing?" Nyssara thought as fear steadily mounted inside her. She no longer felt as though she was fighting a Dragonborn. It felt as though she was facing a bloodthirsty beast driven only by instinct.
Erend stared directly at her. His entire body was now surrounded by black and blue lightning that lashed wildly around him. Every surge of electricity distorted the surrounding space as thunder echoed continuously.
Then he charged at her once again.
Nyssara also lunged forward.
But this time, she was far more cautious than before.
—
King Garrie dropped onto his knees. A moment later, the Void Architect stepped forward and drove a powerful kick into the king’s face.
The impact threw King Garrie onto his back. The king stared up at the dark sky.
His mind had become blank. Pain filled every part of his body, and he could no longer force his exhausted mind to think clearly.
Only one desire remained within him. To protect his people. But he couldn’t do anything else right now.
The Void Architect slowly walked toward him with an unnerving expression. His teeth were tightly clenched while his mouth slightly open, giving him the appearance of a snarling beast.
He did not bother saying anything. This king had become too great an obstacle. He had to end him here.
The Void Architect stopped over King Garrie and raised both of his swords high above his head, preparing to drive them straight down.
But at that moment, a brilliant wave of white light erupted from the direction of the palace.
It shot across the air and slammed into the Void Architect.
The impact blasted him sideways. His swords slipped from his hands and clattered across the ground.
The Void Architect immediately looked toward the towering pillar of white light. But his eyes did not seem to be looking at the pillar itself. They were fixed on something beyond it.
"Why won’t you return to me?" the Void Architect asked angrily. "I am your creator!"
"It is enough. I refuse to become your tool for destroying worlds," the Sky Anchor replied inside his mind.
The Void Architect heard the voice of his Creation again for the first time in a very long time.
But this time, that voice held nothing except contempt.
