Chapter 338: Chapter 338: Did I Hurt You?
Claire Sinclair was growing impatient and raised her hands again to pound on his chest. "I already said I’m fine. Do you have to make me resent you?"
She still couldn’t get over the double blow she’d suffered at Quincy Manor today. Even if he came here personally, she couldn’t just pretend that nothing had happened.
Besides, she had already made up her mind to resign...
She had to get away from him, the farther the better.
Hearing her words, Adrian had no choice but to release her and step back.
Claire let out a soft sigh of relief and said in a low voice, "Tomorrow, I’m going to Teacher Hartwell to resign. Then I’m going to go somewhere no one knows me and start over. As for any separation agreement, it doesn’t matter whether we sign it or not.
I’m never coming back to this place again. If you need me to sign divorce papers, with your resources, it should be easy enough to find me. Just have someone send them over for me to sign. That’s all I have to say."
Adrian Quincy involuntarily took another step back, his heart shattering.
"I saw the video you recorded today. That’s not what you said, Claire..." He had clearly heard her say she wanted to stand by his side, to be admired by the world.
Even though she hadn’t finished her sentence, he knew that in that moment, she had already made up her mind to be with him.
Claire found it laughable. "I must have been out of my mind to say something so stupid. I’ve changed my mind now. Please leave, and don’t bother me again."
Adrian Quincy remained unmoved.
’If I walk out this door, I’m afraid I’ll lose her forever. There will be no coming back from this.’
Claire grew more impatient and raised her hands to push him. "Go! Go now! I don’t want to see you for another second!"
Adrian took the opportunity to pull her into his arms, holding her so tightly that it hurt a little. "If this really has to be the end for us today, then just let me hold you before I go."
Claire struggled for a moment, but it was useless. She fell still, tacitly accepting his embrace.
The heartache she had suppressed all day erupted in an instant.
’They had been getting along so well, so why could they never make it work?’
’Claire Sinclair, what is wrong with you?’
’He’s right here in your arms. Why can’t you even succeed at loving one person?’
’Useless...’
Claire gritted her teeth as tears streamed uncontrollably down her face.
As if sensing her tears, Adrian abruptly lowered his head. The sight of her, eyes downcast as tears fell, made his heart feel as if it were being scorched by a fire that only grew more intense.
He released her in a panic, not daring to hold her any longer. "Claire, did I hurt you?"
"No... I’m just... I can’t accept this..." she choked out, her body trembling. Her hair fell over her shoulders, obscuring half her face.
Her crying only intensified the ache in her heart.
"Why can’t you accept it?"
"There’s no reason... Please go. I don’t want to see you again."
"Claire..." How could Adrian bear to leave her while she was heartbroken and crying? He couldn’t bring himself to go, worried something bad might happen to her.
But he also didn’t dare touch her again, afraid it would only make her cry harder.
Claire’s back was against the wall as she slid weakly to the floor. Perhaps it was the alcohol, but she suddenly blurted out everything on her mind.
"It’s just that... even when you’re right in front of me, holding me this tightly, we still can’t end up together. It’s like there’s a river of stars between us that we can never cross."
At her words, Adrian sat down beside her. He softened his tone and said, "You don’t have to cross it. I can fly over to you. Just like right now."
