Chapter 2436: Story 2437: The Keeper of Echoes
The silver-robed figure remained motionless upon the staircase.
Its lantern bathed the underground chamber in soft starlight.
The flame did not flicker.
It breathed.
Each gentle pulse awakened another forgotten symbol carved into the silver walls.
The Hall of Echoes slowly came alive.
Noah stood frozen.
The warmth inside his chest answered the lantern’s glow.
Not with fear.
With familiarity.
The hooded stranger smiled beneath the shadow of the cowl.
"You remember the feeling."
Noah shook his head.
"I don’t remember you."
"You will."
The Keeper resumed climbing.
Every footstep echoed far longer than it should have, as though countless unseen travelers were walking beside him.
Aiden instinctively stepped in front of Noah.
"Don’t come any closer."
The Keeper stopped.
His hidden face turned toward Aiden.
"You always protect him."
Aiden frowned.
"What do you mean, always?"
For a brief instant, sadness filled the Keeper’s voice.
"In every dream."
Silence followed.
The words settled heavily inside Noah’s mind.
Every dream.
Not this life.
Not the apocalypse.
All of them.
The Keeper lifted his lantern.
The silver flame drifted into the air, separating into dozens of tiny lights.
Each became a floating memory.
Noah saw Hollow Creek as it had been only yesterday.
Then another Hollow Creek.
Then another.
One buried beneath snow.
One swallowed by forests.
One built upon towering cliffs above endless oceans.
Different worlds.
The same town.
The same people.
Different choices.
"The Hall of Echoes remembers every beginning," the Keeper said quietly.
"It preserves what every new dream forgets."
One glowing memory drifted toward Noah.
The moment he touched it, another vision burst into life.
He stood beside the silver door once more.
The Witness watched silently.
Before Noah stepped through, the Witness had whispered something.
Words Noah had never remembered.
"When the echoes call, do not walk alone."
The vision vanished.
Noah looked immediately toward Aiden.
The warning had not been about danger.
It had been about friendship.
The Keeper nodded as though hearing Noah’s thoughts.
"No dream survives through one soul alone."
Deep within the Hall, another sound echoed.
A child’s laughter.
Soft.
Distant.
Followed by the lonely note of the silver horn.
The Keeper’s expression grew solemn.
"He is awake."
Noah’s heartbeat quickened.
"Who?"
Instead of answering, the Keeper turned toward the darkness beyond the staircase.
The lantern brightened.
An immense circular chamber slowly emerged from the shadows.
Hundreds of silver doors surrounded its walls.
Each bore a different symbol.
Each led to a different dream.
Some were sealed.
Some stood open.
One had been shattered from the inside.
Black cracks surrounded its broken frame.
Cold air drifted from the darkness beyond.
The Keeper lowered his head.
"That door should never have opened."
Aiden swallowed nervously.
"What was inside it?"
The Keeper finally pulled back his hood.
Noah gasped.
The face beneath was older than time.
Yet unmistakably familiar.
It was Noah.
Older.
Scarred.
His silver eyes carried the weight of countless forgotten lives.
"I was."
Before either boy could speak, the broken doorway erupted with black mist.
A pair of glowing crimson eyes slowly opened within the darkness.
A voice, ancient and filled with quiet amusement, echoed through the Hall.
"So..."
"You finally found yourself."
The silver lantern dimmed.
The Hall trembled.
And every door in the chamber began unlocking at once.
