Chapter 2435: Story 2436: The Echo Beneath Hollow Creek

Morning settled gently over Hollow Creek.

Sunlight spilled across quiet streets.

Children hurried toward school.

Neighbors waved from their porches.

Dogs barked behind white fences.

Everything appeared ordinary.

Yet Noah could feel it.

A faint vibration beneath every footstep.

A heartbeat.

Not his own.

Not the world’s.

Something sleeping below the town.

He tried to ignore it.

For several hours, life almost felt normal.

History class.

Mathematics.

Lunch with Aiden.

The ordinary conversations sounded strange after witnessing the birth and death of universes.

Aiden nudged him.

"You’ve been staring out the window all day."

Noah smiled weakly.

"Just tired."

Before Aiden could reply, every light inside the classroom flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the school bell rang.

Not once.

Not twice.

Thirty-six times.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The teacher frowned.

"That’s... never happened before."

Outside, birds suddenly stopped singing.

A heavy silence settled across Hollow Creek.

Only Noah heard the whisper.

"Come below."

His silver heartbeat answered.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Far beneath the school, something ancient echoed back.

The sound was identical.

Noah stood abruptly.

"I have to go."

Without waiting for permission, he rushed from the classroom.

Aiden chased after him.

"Noah! What’s wrong?"

"I don’t know."

But deep inside, he did.

The echo was leading him somewhere.

The two boys crossed empty streets until they reached the abandoned water tower standing at the edge of town.

The same tower where the nightmare had begun.

Except now it looked untouched.

Fresh paint covered its steel supports.

No rust.

No decay.

Yet Noah’s heartbeat became stronger.

The ground beneath the tower trembled.

Aiden stepped back nervously.

"Did you feel that?"

Before Noah could answer, a crack spread across the earth.

A narrow line.

Barely wide enough for light to escape.

Silver light.

Ancient symbols rose from the opening like glowing mist.

The symbols circled Noah without harming him.

His chest blazed.

The silver flame within his heart responded.

Then the ground slowly opened.

Not breaking.

Parting.

A staircase emerged.

Carved from polished silver stone.

Each step carried symbols older than language.

The air flowing upward smelled of rain.

Of forests.

Of memories.

Aiden stared into the glowing passage.

"What is this place?"

Noah whispered the answer before realizing he already knew.

"The Hall of Echoes."

The words felt familiar.

As though someone else had spoken through him.

Far below, a horn sounded.

Not loud.

Soft.

Melancholy.

The same lonely note that had echoed beneath Hollow Creek at dawn.

This time, it was followed by another sound.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Steady.

Ascending.

Someone was climbing toward them.

Noah and Aiden exchanged nervous glances.

The silver staircase glowed brighter.

A silhouette appeared far below.

Tall.

Wrapped in flowing robes.

Its face hidden beneath a silver hood.

In one hand it carried a lantern whose flame burned with quiet starlight.

In the other, it held an old wooden staff marked with the same runes glowing inside Noah’s heart.

The stranger stopped halfway up the staircase.

Then, for the first time, it spoke.

Its voice was calm.

Gentle.

And impossibly familiar.

"Welcome home, Noah."

The silver flame within Noah’s heart flared brilliantly.

Not in warning.

In recognition.

Some memories had survived the new dream.

Others...

Had been waiting beneath Hollow Creek all along.
