Chapter 2437: Story 2438: The Man Beyond the Broken Door
Every silver door trembled.
Ancient locks, untouched for countless dreams, clicked open one after another.
The echoes rolling through the Hall no longer sounded like footsteps.
They sounded like voices.
Thousands of voices.
Fragments of forgotten lives whispered through the chamber.
Some laughed.
Some cried.
Some called Noah’s name.
The crimson eyes within the broken doorway burned brighter.
They were neither angry nor cruel.
They watched with unsettling patience.
The older Noah stepped forward, placing himself between the darkness and the two boys.
His silver lantern blazed.
The gentle starlight transformed into a towering wall of shimmering radiance.
For the first time, the black mist stopped advancing.
"You should have remained asleep," the Keeper said.
A quiet chuckle answered him.
"I slept long enough."
The voice drifted from the broken doorway like cold wind through abandoned ruins.
"I’ve watched every dream from the shadows."
"I’ve watched every Noah make the same choices."
"And every one of them failed."
Noah’s heart pounded.
"What are you talking about?"
The crimson eyes shifted toward him.
"You think this is your first chance?"
The Hall suddenly shook.
One of the silver doors burst open.
Instead of another room, it revealed a battlefield.
Noah saw himself older, dressed in silver armor stained with blood.
He stood alone before the ruins of Hollow Creek.
Behind him lay countless fallen friends.
The vision vanished.
Another door opened.
This Noah wore a black crown beside Malthor.
The world around him had surrendered to Endless Night.
Another failure.
Another ending.
A third door opened.
This time Noah never discovered the Silver Kingdom.
The apocalypse consumed humanity within weeks.
The door slammed shut.
More doors opened.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Every one revealed another Noah.
Another dream.
Another fate.
Victory.
Defeat.
Sacrifice.
Corruption.
Hope.
Despair.
The Hall of Echoes had not merely preserved memories.
It had preserved possibilities.
Aiden stared in disbelief.
"How many versions of you are there?"
The Keeper answered quietly.
"As many as there have been dreams."
The crimson-eyed stranger laughed again.
"And every single one believed they were special."
Noah clenched his fists.
"Who are you?"
Silence lingered.
Then the black mist slowly withdrew.
A figure emerged.
He wore weathered black clothing instead of armor.
No crown rested upon his head.
No weapons hung from his side.
He looked... ordinary.
Until Noah saw his face.
It was his own.
Not older.
Not younger.
Just... different.
His eyes glowed deep crimson where Noah’s shone silver.
His smile carried centuries of quiet sorrow.
"My name no longer matters," the stranger said.
"But once..."
He looked directly into Noah’s eyes.
"...I was the first dream to fail."
The Hall fell silent.
Even the silver doors stopped moving.
The Keeper lowered his lantern.
"So the Broken King has returned."
The crimson-eyed man nodded.
"I never left."
Suddenly the silver symbols across the chamber turned crimson one by one.
The Hall groaned like a living creature awakening from ancient sleep.
The Broken King looked toward the countless doors.
"They’ve opened because the dreams are merging."
A deep rumble echoed beneath Hollow Creek.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Far below, something immense shifted.
Not awakening.
Turning over in its sleep.
The Broken King’s smile faded.
"We don’t have much time."
Noah took an uncertain step forward.
"What is sleeping beneath this town?"
The Broken King slowly looked toward the deepest darkness beneath the Hall.
His voice became barely a whisper.
"The first nightmare."
The silver lantern flickered.
The ground split once more.
And from the abyss below came the slow, unmistakable sound...
...of a heartbeat answering Noah’s own.
