Chapter 9: Two Sides of a False Coin

The dust from Lilith’s departure had barely settled. The silence that replaced it felt more dangerous than her blood-Qi had.

Neil stood among the door splinters, eyes narrowed, mind already cataloging Celine’s elevated heart rate and rigid posture.

She wasn’t protecting him anymore. Her enforcers had formed a semi-circle behind her — protecting her from him.

"Explain," Celine said. "A monster who can butcher tier-four beasts with her bare hands just knelt in your blood and begged. What did you do to her?"

In under a second, Neil collapsed.

The cold shadow that had broken Lilith’s mind dissolved completely. Shoulders slumped. Knees trembling. He dropped to the floor, hands shaking at his neck.

"L-Lady Celine... I didn’t do anything... I was so scared—"

"Don’t." She stepped forward, blade tip stopping an inch from his nose. "I heard you. You spoke of balance, of sacrifice, of your family. You controlled her."

"I didn’t control her!" Tears welled — genuine biological response, forced through sheer physiological precision. "She is insane! She thinks my injuries were a secret romantic message! She thinks I love her!"

Celine’s blade wavered. "What?"

"When she said she’d slaughter the Disciplinary Hall, I knew my family would be blamed as accomplices." He coughed, clutching his neck. "I couldn’t fight her. So I used her own madness against her. I told her if she killed anyone I would kill myself so she could never have me. It was a bluff — a desperate, pathetic bluff of a dying rat! If she hadn’t believed her own delusions, she would have ripped my head off!"

Celine stared at him, sharp mind working.

A desperate rat. The logic landed cleanly — a weak, cornered animal mimicking a predator to survive. No profound strategy.

Just instinct and a crazy girl’s specific mental illness.

But as she looked at the shallow cut on his neck, something cold settled in her chest. A commoner who could weaponize a yandere’s psychosis under immediate threat of death wasn’t a resource.

He was an unstable anomaly.

"You are terrifying, Neil," she whispered, lowering the blade. "If Lilith ever wakes from her delusion and realizes you bluffed her, she will turn this entire province into a graveyard to erase her shame."

"That’s why I need your protection!" He crawled forward, the picture of a helpless animal. "The Disciplinary Hall is the only place safe from her. I’ll do anything — information on the Vespera guards, whatever you need — just keep her away from me!"

Contempt replaced the fear on her face.

Political calculation clicked back into place.

"Subterranean cells. Double the guards. If he breathes without my permission, break his legs."

"Yes, Vice-President!"

As the enforcers hauled him up, his head hung forward, face hidden by messy bangs. Beneath the shadow of his hair, the tears dried instantly.

Threat level lowered. Suspicion redirected into utility. Phase one complete.

High above the infirmary rooftops, Kaede dropped from the outer wall into the bamboo grove, boots making no sound. She moved fast, mind moving faster.

Unlike Celine, she had watched everything — three days of heartbeat data, micro-expressions, the 70.5% exam paper, the exact angle of the sword-Qi impact.

Inside her private study, she slammed the logbook onto the desk. Lit one candle. Her fingers were trembling — not fear. The specific tremor of a scholar who had found something she wasn’t supposed to find.

"Celine is an idiot," she whispered. "A desperate rat. A lucky bluff. Nonsense."

She opened the page.

Look at the timeline. Her finger moved down the entries. Neil enters the library. Two hours later he has isolated texts on Vespera clan psychological genetic flaws. Six hours after that — the sword-Qi incident, the asylum claim, the immunity. Tonight — the exact psychological trigger from those texts, deployed against a tier-four cultivator with surgical precision.

"He didn’t bluff her," Kaede said quietly, a shiver running down her spine. "He engineered her."

The 70.5% wasn’t a desperate pass. It was the exact statistical threshold to remain under Disciplinary Hall jurisdiction without triggering direct Elder interference.

She drew a circle around his name.

Every architect leaves a blueprint, she thought, competitive light flickering in her dead eyes. And I am going to find it.

The subterranean cells beneath the Disciplinary Hall were cold, damp limestone. Arrays carved into the walls suppressed all external Qi.

To the guards outside: a pathetic janitor crying himself to sleep.

Neil sat chained to an iron chair, deep in his own consciousness.

[ System Report: Infirmary’s residual healing energy fully absorbed. Dantian restoration: 14.2%. Minor Qi strands can now be channeled without core fracture. ]

Good. His mental voice was razor clean.

Celine will bring interrogation tools tomorrow. False confessions about the Vespera clan.

[ And Kaede, Host? Long-range perception caught her on the roof. Her emotional reading was pure cognitive stimulation — she didn’t buy the victim act at all. ]

Kaede doesn’t read emotion. She reads patterns. He leaned his head back against the cold stone. She’s already concluded I’m a hidden mastermind.

A soft exhale in the dark.

Let them both play their parts. Celine will try to crush me as a threat. Kaede will try to expose me as a riddle. When I let their two separate, flawed conclusions crash into each other tomorrow — the Disciplinary Hall burns from the inside. And I walk out with my core healed.

The game had expanded. The pieces were moving.

The janitor in the deepest cell was the only one who knew the board was already broken.
