Chapter 8: Weaponizing the Obsession
The countdown to a massacre had begun.
Neil sat cross-legged on the jade floor of his recovery room, entirely ignoring the bed.
Grey uniform still stained with dried blood. Posture cold, rigid, running calculations at full speed.
Outside, the enforcers had tripled. Celine had taken Lilith’s threat at the eastern gate seriously — the entire sector locked down like a prize exhibit in a golden cage.
[ System Alert: Time until sunset: 2 hours. Target ’Lilith Vespera’ is currently bypassing outer wards. Zero weapons. She intends bare-handed slaughter-Qi. Massacre probability: 99.4%. ]
Let her come. His eyes flashed behind his glasses. If she wants a tragedy, I’ll give her a masterpiece. System — pull the emotional sub-routine on a 500% obsession scale. I need her structural weakness.
[ Analysis: A yandere’s obsession is rooted in absolute possession. However, because Lilith believes Host sacrificed his blood to protect her feelings, her weak point has shifted. She no longer fears losing you to others. She fears breaking the fragile thing that "loves" her. Strategy: Reverse Psychological Martyrdom. ]
Perfect. The smile that crossed his face had nothing gentle in it. Let’s write the final act.
Two hours later, the sun bled crimson across the Akuto peaks.
The medicinal herb smell died first.
Replaced by raw, concentrated blood-Qi.
Cold swept through the infirmary twenty degrees at once.
BOOM.
A heavy impact at the front gates. Enforcers screaming. Bodies hitting white jade walls.
Lilith had arrived — no blade, just bare palms releasing shockwaves of crimson energy that turned armor into scrap.
"Neil~!" Her voice drifted down the corridor, sweet and completely unhinged. "My brave boy... I’m here to take you out of this dirty cage!"
The final four enforcers outside his door drew their broadswords, faces pale, sweat running.
The doors didn’t open. They exploded inward — splinters, dust, four enforcers thrown into opposite walls, unconscious before they landed.
Lilith stepped through the wreckage. Silver hair floating wild. Face spattered with blood — none of it hers. Crimson eyes locked on Neil with a devouring, terrifying hunger.
"Neil!" She rushed forward, arms extended. "Let’s go. I’ve carved a garden for you in the hidden valley where nobody—"
"Stop."
Not a scream. Not a whimper. Flat. Quiet.
Hollow.
Lilith’s boots skidded to a halt inches from the cot.
Neil stood on top of it. In his hand — a six-inch shard of explosive white jade pried from the healing array an hour ago. Its jagged edge pressed firmly against his own throat, right over the carotid. A thin line of fresh red was already running down the stone.
"N-Neil...?" The manic ecstasy on her face cracked into raw confusion. "Drop that. It’s dangerous—"
"One more step, and I push it through," he said. Same hollow voice. Same dead eyes.
"Why?!" Genuine panic seized her. "I came to save you! They made you bleed! Why are you holding that against yourself?!"
"Because you are killing me, Lilith." He held her gaze steady. "You think you’re saving me. Look at what you just did outside. The moment you drag me out of this academy, the Disciplinary Hall declares my family as Vespera clan accomplices. My sister Nina gets hunted and executed before your carriage reaches the valley."
"I’ll protect her too! I’ll send my clan’s shadows—"
"And what about my soul?" His grip tightened. More blood.
Lilith’s knees buckled at the sight of it. "Stop pressing it — please, Neil, just stop—"
"You told me at the gate that you understood my sacrifice," he said, voice dropping to something quiet and precisely calibrated. "I took Celine’s blackmail. I took your sword-Qi. I endured the elders’ humiliation — all to maintain a fragile balance where my family lives and I never have to betray your heart by spying on you."
He leaned his neck further into the shard.
"And now, because of your impatient desire to lock me in a room, you are destroying everything I bled for. If you take me tonight, you prove my sacrifice meant nothing to you. You prove you don’t love the Neil who tried to protect you — you just want a puppet." His eyes held hers. "If my family dies because of your rampage and my pride gets torn apart, I will not live as your toy in a hidden valley. I will die here. By my own hand. And my blood will be on your palms forever."
[ System: Target ’Lilith Vespera’ — psychological devastation check: Critical Hit. Her 500% obsession has turned inward. She now believes that forcing you makes her the villain who murdered her own tragic lover. ]
Lilith fell to her knees.
The apex predator of the Vespera clan was on the floor, clutching her head, sobbing.
The blood-Qi around her dissolved completely, leaving something small and broken behind.
"No... no... I thought I was helping... I thought you wanted me to save you...
please drop the stone... I’ll do anything..."
Neil didn’t lower the shard. He looked down at her like something carved from cold stone.
"If you want me to live — if you genuinely value what I sacrificed — then walk out of this infirmary right now," he said. One thread of false warmth woven carefully into the cold. "Return to your clan quarters. Let Celine think she won this round. Let the balance hold. Only under the academy’s laws can I ever look at you without seeing the destruction of everything I protected. Do you understand?"
Lilith looked up, face soaked, eyes wide with desperate hope. "If I leave... you won’t hate me? You won’t—"
"I will live. For the sake of the balance."
"Okay... okay, I’m leaving — see? I’m leaving—" She scrambled backward on her hands and knees, terrified that one wrong movement would make him follow through.
She stood shakily, wiped the blood from her face, and looked at him with a submission so complete it bordered on worship.
Then she was gone. Retreating footsteps hurried and small down the corridor.
Silence.
Neil lowered his hand. Tossed the jade shard onto the cot with a dull clatter. Reached into his pocket. Wiped the shallow cut with a clean handkerchief. The wound was already half-closed from the room’s residual energy.
His face was empty. The tragic lover was gone. Only the cold remained.
"Unconventional," he murmured, adjusting his glasses. "But 100% efficient."
[ System Note: I am reclassifying Host from ’Mastermind’ to ’Pure Unadulterated Demon.’ You used her obsession to force her into submissive trauma, made her feel guilty for trying to rescue you, and sent her home crying — while making her believe it was all tragic devotion. My processors are weeping for that girl. ]
A yandere cannot be defeated by logic or strength, Neil replied, stepping over the unconscious enforcers in the corridor. You defeat them by turning their own limits into their cage. She won’t step out of line for weeks — too afraid I’ll hurt myself.
A slow clap echoed from the dark end of the hallway.
Celine stepped out of the shadows, a full squad of High-Tier enforcers behind her. She had arrived in time to catch the end of it.
Her violet eyes were wide — shock, disbelief, and something that looked uncomfortably close to fear.
She had expected a bloodbath. Instead she had watched a broken-Dantian janitor bring the most dangerous psychopath in the academy to her knees with a rock and thirty seconds of words.
"Neil Harlan..." she whispered, hand trembling slightly on her sword hilt. "What kind of monster are you?"
Before he could pull the weak persona back up, a cool breeze moved through the broken window.
On the roof above, Kaede’s silhouette closed her logbook with a quiet, distinct snap.
The physical threat was gone. Celine was asking questions she hadn’t asked before. And the dynamic of Akuto Academy had just shifted in ways nobody had calculated yet.
