Chapter 10: Convergence of Faulty Gears

The subterranean cells of the Disciplinary Hall were built to break empires. An eighteen-year-old janitor should have been nothing.

Black ironstone walls. Ancient blue runes actively suppressing ambient Qi. The only sound — a rhythmic, agonizing drip of water designed to grind down psychological endurance one drop at a time.

Neil sat perfectly still, chained to the iron chair, head hanging low. To the guards outside the bars, he looked like a shell of a person trembling in the dark.

Inside, the Mastermind Core ran at absolute cold serenity.

[ System: Dantian stabilization — 14.5%. Ironstone suppression field at 88% efficiency, leaving a 2% variance. Residual Qi converted into defensive mental barriers. ]

Time?

[ Precisely midnight. The variables you set in motion are beginning to collide. ]

Celine won’t wait until dawn to prep her leverage. She’s coming now.

The heavy corridor door groaned open. Crisp, authoritarian boot-heels on wet stone.

Celine stepped into the torchlight — midnight-black leather combat suit, formal robes discarded. Two interrogators behind her carrying a velvet-lined case of obsidian needles. Violet eyes cold and fixed on Neil.

"Leave us. Block the entrance."

Guards saluted and retreated. The outer barrier slammed shut.

She walked slowly to the bars, studying the dried cut on his neck. "Comfortable, Neil? Your performance at the infirmary kept me awake for hours. A commoner who can make a Vespera monster weep is... an interesting variable."

Neil raised his head slowly — wide eyes, rapid blinking, cracked glasses. "L-Lady Celine... I told you everything. I just bluffed. I didn’t mean to—"

"Quiet." Her voice cracked like ice. "Tomorrow you are going to sign a formal, blood-sealed confession stating that the Vespera clan ordered you to infiltrate the Disciplinary Hall using Lilith as a shield."

His chains rattled as he pulled back in feigned horror. "A false confession? The Vesperas will skin my family alive—"

"Your family lives or dies based on my pen." She signaled the interrogators. "Cooperate, and I move them to Vane clan territory. Don’t..." She leaned in, voice dropping. "...and these needles trace your meridians until you forget your own name."

Moving faster than expected, Neil noted. Good. Impatience breeds blind spots.

The senior interrogator stepped forward, inserting the silver key into the runic lock. Click. Click. The tumblers began to turn.

The blue runes on the walls violently flickered.

Bzzzt—

White fog flooded the corridor — dense, choking, vaporized tracking array with microscopic ghost-orchid. Sensory arrays went blind instantly.

Celine’s hand flew to her rapier. "An intrusion—"

Black iron spheres dropped from the ceiling. Flash-Qi detonated. The corridor went white.

"Protect the Vice-President!"

A slender shadow dropped silently from the air vent directly above the cell door.

Kaede. Faceless mask, calculated movements — unmistakable to Cold Observation.

She hadn’t come to rescue Neil. She’d come to abduct him — convinced Celine was about to torture a hidden mastermind and extract secrets she wanted for herself.

Her hand swept toward the runic lock.

But Celine was a trained combatant, not a standard arrogant noble. Even blinded, her internal sensory core caught the air displacement near the cell door.

"Die, assassin!" Her rapier flashed through the mist — the Vane clan’s Thirteen Piercing Shadows, executed in total darkness.

Kaede’s eyes narrowed. She hadn’t accounted for this level of precision. She abandoned the lock, releasing a barrage of ink-tipped needles from her sleeve.

Clang. Clang. Clang. Clang.

Sparks and metal. The corridor turned into a furious, silent storm.

"Who sent you?!" Celine hissed, certain this was a Vespera shadow sent to silence Neil before the confession. Every time Kaede tried to slip past to the lock, Celine’s blade cut her off. Kaede, increasingly frustrated, believed Celine was deliberately blocking her to hide the Architect’s secrets from the academy.

Two completely different, completely wrong conclusions. Fighting each other at full intensity.

Kaede threw a heavy explosive talisman at Celine’s feet.

BOOM.

Stone floor shattered. Both interrogators slammed into walls, unconscious. Celine slid back five paces, boots cutting grooves into stone, leather suit singed.

"A death-squad talisman — you dare commit treason in my hall?!"

Kaede rushed the door. Fingers on the silver key.

Celine’s rapier was already at her throat.

They fought with absolute, savage intensity — each driven by a separate, flawed conclusion, each perfectly canceling the other’s plan.

Neil hadn’t moved. Hadn’t spoken. Hadn’t used a single strand of Qi.

He was sitting in his chair watching them dismantle each other’s operations in real time.

[ System: This is absolute poetry. Celine just cut Kaede’s extraction rope. Kaede just froze Celine’s backup alarm system. They are perfectly, organically destroying their own security grid for you. Host hasn’t done anything. ]

Look at the wall runes, Neil thought.

He glanced left. The blue runes were sputtering — overloaded by the feedback of two high-tier girls fighting at full power in an enclosed suppression chamber.

Crack.

The chains at his wrists went loose.

His Dantian breathed. 14.5% restored core surging, filling his meridians with cold, clean power for the first time in days.

Clang!

One final massive clash — Kaede’s mask sliced, a strand of dark hair visible. Celine’s rapier knocked spinning across the floor.

Both girls fell back, breathing hard, energy spent.

"Alert... outer guards..." Celine reached for her communication jade. Frozen solid by Kaede’s talisman.

Kaede looked through the bars at Neil one last time — trembling, pale, apparently helpless. She cursed silently, threw a smoke bomb, and disappeared back into the ventilation shaft just as the outer doors began groaning under the guards’ weight.

The fog cleared.

Celine knelt on the floor, panting, hand over the bleeding scratch on her shoulder. She looked at the cell.

Neil was huddled in the corner, chains rattling, covered in soot and stone dust. The picture of a helpless civilian who had survived a war zone by pure luck.

"L-Lady Celine..." he whimpered. "The bad people... they tried to kill me... please don’t let them come back..."

She closed her eyes. Stood. Retrieved her rapier. "Shut up, rat. You’re safe."

When the outer guards finally burst through the shattered doorway, her face was fury.

"Lock down the entire eastern sector. The Vespera clan just launched an assassination attempt inside my cells. Tell the President — we are at war."

Guards rushed past. Neil crawled slowly back onto his iron chair and adjusted his glasses.

Beneath his bangs, his eyes were wide open and completely calm.

The Disciplinary Hall’s security grid was down. Celine was declaring war on the Vesperas. Kaede was retreating with a broken plan. And the chains at his wrists — he’d slipped out of them the moment the runes died, holding them loosely to maintain the illusion.

The factions are bleeding, the grid is dead, and my core is free to heal, he thought, the slow smirk finally spreading.

Thank you for the rescue, ladies.
