Chapter 97: Chapter 97 Hard to breathe
Alana glanced at the price on the receipt and found it hard to breathe.
“Luca, he showed me the electronic receipt for the pants. It really does cost over a hundred thousand dollars...”
She never would have imagined that a mere pair of dress pants could be so expensive...
She couldn’t earn enough in a years to afford a single pair of his pants.
The gap between them was just too vast.
With such a vast gap between them, it was even less appropriate for them to get entangled.
Luca wasn’t short on money either; he was a rich second-generation heir, with his
parents’ financial backing and his own company to fall back on.
So when he heard it would cost over that much, he agreed without hesitation.
“Alright, have him give me his bank account number, and I’ll transfer the money to him.”
Anyone living in Ford estate complex was either wealthy or well-connected; he
should have realized the other party wouldn’t try to extort him.
Alana looked up at Stephan again. “Your bank account number...”
Stephan’s tone was icy, his voice strained. “I don’t have it on me. I’ll give it to you later.”
Alana relayed this to Luca exactly as he’d said, her voice soft and delicate, with the
gentle, sweet tone of a woman from the royal family.
It was practically like she was being coy.
Stephan listened, feeling a tight, aching sensation in his chest, as if it were about to explode. “Alright, then I’ll just wait for him to send me the bank account number, and I’ll transfer the money to him.”
Alana nodded. “Okay.”
Luca added, “By the way, Lana, it’s so late, haven’t you gone home yet? Since you haven’t gone home, you don’t have to go home tonight either. Stay at my place. I have a few spare guest rooms; you can stay in whichever one you like.”
“After all, you’re injured, and I wouldn’t feel right letting you go home.”
Stephan felt like his ears were about to explode.
It was bad enough that they’d been chatting this long, but now that man actually wanted Alana to stay at his place?!
He must be out of his mind!
Alana, just try agreeing to that if you dare!
Alana felt the intensely piercing gaze from above, like an electric wire, wrapping itself tightly around her.
She bit her lip and asked uneasily, “Luca, is it really convenient for me to stay at your
place?”
Luca replied, “It’s convenient, as long as you don’t mind.”
“I...of course I don’t mind.”
“Then it’s settled. Just stay at my place tonight; no need to go back.”
“But...”
“No ‘buts.’ Do you really think it’s safe for you to go home?”
“It’s dangerous for an injured girl to take a taxi home, isn’t it?”
Alana was momentarily at a loss for words.
Stephan could no longer contain his anger. He immediately reached out and snatched Alana’s phone from her.
“It’s none of your business,” he said coldly. “I’ll take her home myself!”
The sudden voice of a man startled Luca, and he instinctively asked, “Who are you?!”
Stephan stared intently at Alana, his thin lips parting slightly as he enunciated each word, clearly, “Her man!”
Alana’s almond-shaped eyes widened in shock. And in disbelief.
Luca was also thrown into shock as well.
Before he could ask any further questions, Stephan hung up the phone with a cold expression.
Alana’s face flushed with embarrassment, and she glared at him with wide eyes.
“You... what are you talking about? Who said you’re my man?”
She reached out, speaking urgently, “Give me the phone! I’ll explain to Luca!”
Stephan grabbed her outstretched wrist and narrowed his slanted eyes as he looked at her.
0Why do you need to explain to him? Do you care about him?”
“No.”
The furrow between Stephan’s brows eased slightly. “Since you don’t, then there’s no need to explain.”
Alana opened her mouth to speak, but in the end, she didn’t argue.
He was so domineering, whether she explained or not, he was going to interfere either way.
Weren’t they supposed to be over?
Why does this man say one thing and do another?
She just didn’t get it.
Alana took a deep breath. “Um, could you give me my phone back?”
“I’m heading back now. Send me your bank account number later, and I’ll pass it on to Luca. He’ll transfer the money for the pants to you.”
With that debt settled, she felt a sense of relief wash over her from head to toe.
It felt so good not to be burdened by debt.
Stephan’s tone grew a bit more serious. “Your knee’s injured. How are you going to get back?”
Alana whispered, “It’s just a knee injury, not a broken leg. I can make it back.”
Stephan furrowed his brow; his tendency to be a bit of a jerk was rearing its head again. “Where are you going? To your place, or to Luca’s house? What kind of example does it set for a woman with a boyfriend to be staying at a grown man’s house? Aren’t you afraid your boyfriend will find out?”
He blurted out a string of words, and that pang of heartache welled up in her chest again, impossible to suppress.
Alana looked utterly innocent, her big, bright eyes wide as she stared at him. “I...I didn’t say I’was going to stay at Luca’s place. Why are you getting so worked up? I don’t need you to remind me. I know it’s not right for a girl to stay at a man’s house, even if he’s not home. I’m not like you, just barging into a girl’s house and hogging her bed.”
By the end of her sentence, her soft tone carried a tiny hint of reproach.
Stephan felt much better hearing that.
As for her little complaint.
He glanced at her nonchalantly. “I’m a rogue; naturally, I can’t be compared to a proper young lady like you.”
Alana hissed.
What was that supposed to mean?
Judging by his tone, was he actually proud of being a rogue?
She muttered to herself, but she didn’t voice her thoughts.
She held out her hand toward the man. “My phone.”
Stephan narrowed his dark eyes dangerously, his deep voice carrying a faint sense of menace. “Miss Martin, as I recall, I gave you this phone.”
It seemed to imply that she had no right to ask for it back.
Alana paused for a moment, then withdrew her hand. “Then I’ll give it back to you.”
Stephan frowned, quickly grabbing her retreating hand and shoving the phone into it. “I was just kidding. Once I give something away, there’s no reason for me to take it back.”
Alana looked at the white phone now resting once again in her palm.
Hearing his words, her feelings were slightly complicated.
She didn’t understand what kind of person he really was.
Sometimes he was clearly frivolous, scheming, and teasing.
Yet, in the little things, he always managed to touch her heart without even trying.
She braced herself and struggled to her feet. “Ollie, Jerry, let’s go home.”
The big golden retriever and the chubby orange cat seemed to have just watched a play; they wagged their heads and trotted over to Alana.
Both the cat and the dog had carefree personalities and weren’t particularly wary of strangers, but when they saw Stephan, they didn’t even treat him like a human.
As the golden retriever passed by Stephan, it accidentally bumped into his calf, then gave him a sideways glance with its tongue hanging out.
