Chapter 98: Chapter 98 Great temperaments
Stephan frowned.
Why did it feel like he’d been provoked by a dog?
Noticing the dark look on Stephan’s face, Alana cleared her throat. “Ahem, don’t worry. They have great temperaments and won’t attack you.”
Stephan’s thin lips twitched slightly, a hint of sarcasm in his voice. “Just because they won’t attack doesn’t mean they won’t provoke people.”
Alana blinked innocently and asked, “What? Did they provoke you?”
Admitting he’d been provoked by a pet dog was more humiliating than eating shit.
Alana reached out and gently petted the two pets before picking up their leashes.
She looked up at the man again.
“Stephan, thank you for tonight. I’m leaving.”
Stephan remained expressionless, his cold eyes fixed on her.
Was she saying goodbye just to make him try to keep her?
Alana lowered her eyes, avoiding his probing gaze, then struggled to take a few steps, limping along as she led the cat and dog.
Stephan watched as the girl struggled to move past him.
His handsome, impassive face showed faint signs of cracking.
With injuries like hers, crawling along as slowly as a turtle, how could she possibly make it home on her own?
Never mind getting home, even just taking those two pets back would be a struggle.
And what if the two pets started acting up and ran off recklessly? What would she do then? Even if she cherished this part-time job, she had to look out for her own health, there was no need to risk her life.
But he had already said it was over between them. Even if she were to risk her life, what business was it of his?
She doesn’t even care about herself, why should he meddle in her affairs?
Stephan’s mind was in turmoil, as if two little figures were fighting each other, neither willing to back down.
Alana, holding her two pets, reached out to open the front door, ready to leave.
But before she could take a step, she heard a sound behind her.
She instinctively turned around. The man strode toward her, taking two steps at a time. Without a word, he scooped her up into his arms.
His face darkened, and he gritted his teeth. “Alana, I’ve truly been bewitched by you!”
Caught off guard, Alana found herself in the man’s arms, her arms instinctively wrapping around his neck.
Her head felt a little dizzy as she thought.
Did he say he’d been bewitched by her?
In what way had he been bewitched by her?
Before she could figure it out, the man suddenly spoke up, “So where does that guy live?”
Alana snapped back to her senses and realized that Stephan had already carried her out of his house.
She pointed in a certain direction.
Stephan’s face remained expressionless; he didn’t respond, but his steps instinctively headed in that direction.
His stride was steady, each step firm and sure.
Alana, held in his arms, was a very petite figure.
Enveloped by his warm breath, she felt a surge of security wash over her.
She clutched the leashes of the two pets in one hand and tugged at the fabric of his shirt across his chest with the other.
Her fingers pressed against the man’s firm muscles through the thin fabric.
She listened quietly as the steady, powerful beat of his heart echoed from his chest.
For some reason, she felt a sense of peaceful contentment. It seemed that being held by him like this wouldn’t be so bad.
Stephan carried her to Luca’s place.
Alana put her two pets in their designated room.
“I’m going back now. I’ll come see you again tomorrow.”
The cat and the dog didn’t want her to leave; they wagged their heads and circled around her, refusing to let her go.
Alana bent down, ruffled their heads, and said gently, “Good boys, stop fussing. Be good and watch the house. I’ll really come see you again tomorrow. But since you two hurt my knee, I might not be able to take you for a walk.”
The moment the two pets heard this, their heads drooped immediately.
The big orange cat even went so far as to extend a paw and scratch the golden retriever. It was all that playful idiot’s fault, now he wouldn’t get to go out and play tomorrow.
It even had a date with the little calico girl next door.
What a frustrating dog!
Alana looked at her two clever, adorable pets, and a smile spread across her face. She was in a great mood.
Seeing how kind Alana was to the two pets, Stephan felt an indescribable tightness in his chest.
She was so gentle with another man’s pets, why wasn’t she a little gentler with him then? Doesn’t he treat her well enough?
Couldn’t she spare a little kindness for him too?
The more he thought about it, the more frustrated he became.
Stephan spoke coldly, “Aren’t you leaving yet? If you don’t leave now, do you want to spend the night at another man’s house then?”
Alana glanced at him, sensing his displeasure, and gave a brief reply.
“Oh, I’ll be right out.”
She waved goodbye to Ollie and Jerry, then closed the door.
Turning around, she saw the man standing behind her. His features were stern, and an icy aura surrounded him, giving off an aloof and cold demeanor
that seemed to say, “Keep your distance.”
She bit her lip, momentarily at a loss for words.
He had just helped her so much; she really should thank him again.
But simply saying “thank you” seemed like it wouldn’t be enough for him.
Or...maybe she should do just what he suggested, kiss him?
But seeing the man’s expression, so stern it seemed devoid of any warmth, she held back the urge to lean in and kiss him.
He seemed a bit unhappy right now. Better to be smart about this and not provoke him. Besides, those ridiculous games between them were over now.
Alana hesitated, then said softly, “That was really a lot of trouble for you just now. Thank you. I’ll just take a cab back from here. You don’t need to...”
Before she could finish, Alana let out a startled gasp.
The man suddenly stepped forward, bent down with a swift motion, and picked her up again.
Holding her close, he walked back at a leisurely pace.
Alana couldn’t help but feel anxious.
“You...where are you taking me?”
Stephan said coldly, “You don’t have to go home tonight. Come home with me. Sleep in my bed.”
Alana was shocked. “No, I can’t. I have to go home! You just said that as a girl, it’s not appropriate for me to stay at another man’s house...”
Besides, he said she should sleep in his bed...
What happens after she slept in his bed?
Wouldn’t he...
Stop, stop, Alana, stop thinking about it!
Stephan lowered his gaze to look at her, his thin lips parting slightly as he spoke, enunciating each word clearly.
“Lana, I want you to understand one thing: I’m not like other men. I’m the man who’s slept with you countless times!”
At his words, her fair cheeks flushed crimson in an instant, the blush spreading all the way to the nape of her neck.
She clutched the front of his shirt tightly with both hands, wanting to say something but unable to find the strength to argue.
Besides, the disparity in strength between a man and a woman was too great.
Alana knew that even if she struggled, she wouldn’t be able to overpower him, so she simply let him carry her back.
She was afraid, what if, just in case, she struggled too hard, fell, and suffered a second injury? It wouldn’t be worth the risk.
Stephan carried her straight to his bedroom and laid her on the bed.
Sitting on the man’s large gray bed, Alana couldn’t help but feel anxious. She struggled, trying to stand up.
But he pressed her back down with his hand.
