Chapter 94: Chapter 94 With unease
He certainly wasn’t one for such hassles.
Never mind.
He couldn’t control her, nor did he want to.
After all, he’d already decided to end things with her. Since he ran into her now, he’d just pretend not to notice.
Stephan turned around, ready to unlock the door with his fingerprint and enter the
house.
Suddenly, a cry of pain rang out behind him. He instinctively turned around and saw the girl who had been running just moments
ago suddenly stumble and fall to the ground.
His pupils contracted sharply, and a sudden wave of anxiety washed over him.
For a split second, he wanted to rush over and pick her up from the ground.
But the last shred of his rationality held him back.
Alana fell to the ground, scraping the skin on her palms and knees until they bled.
She winced, accidentally brushing against the wounds, and her eyes welled up with tears.
“Ouch!”
It hurt so much.
She never expected to suffer a workplace injury on her very first day on the job.
Maybe she should ask Luca to reimburse me later?
But when she thought about how Luca and Eve were close friends, she felt too
embarrassed to bring it up.
It looks like she’ll just have to suffer through this little injury on her own.
The big golden retriever knew he’d caused trouble.
It ran a long way, but when it saw Alana hadn’t followed, it turned around and looked back.
Seeing her lying on the ground, it immediately scampered back.
It barked at Alana a few times, “Woof, woof, woof...”
It stopped frolicking, sticking out its tongue with a pleading expression, looking as if it felt a bit guilty toward Alana.
Seeing the Golden Retriever’s expression, Alana couldn’t bring herself to scold it.
She could only offer a token reprimand.
“Ollie, it’s all your fault. You’ve made my knees and palms bleed. Next time, you’re not allowed to break free from the leash and run so fast. Otherwise, I’ll never play with you again.”
“Woof, woof, woof!”
The Golden Retriever barked a few times, as if agreeing with her.
Alana took the opportunity to put the leash back on the Golden Retriever.
Just as she was about to stand up, she suddenly sensed something and instinctively looked up. Almost immediately, she spotted a familiar building in the distance and a familiar black figure.
The man stood beneath a streetlight, his shadow stretched long on the ground.
His three-dimensional silhouette was shrouded in the faint night, appearing hazy and mysterious.
He seemed to have been standing there for quite some time, completely motionless.
Even though the night was deep, she still... sensed his gaze directed at her, intense and impossible to ignore.
Alana bit her lip, feeling a bit flustered.
Had he seen her just now, chasing after the dog and then falling down?
It was a bit embarrassing.
So be it.
After all, it was over between them.
Stephan frowned when he saw Alana had noticed him.
At the same time, he kept telling himself:
Lameass, just walk away. Don’t pay her any mind.
He’d told himself: if he pays her any more attention, he’s a hopeless.
He didn’t want to be a fool and certainly not an hopeless one at that.
But his legs seemed rooted to the ground, and he remained motionless.
Meanwhile, Alana said to herself, “He’s standing there like a statue, is he making fun of me?”
She bit her lip, trying to get up from the ground.
But the scrape on her knee was pretty bad; before she could even stand up, the pain made her sit back down.
The big golden retriever saw the scrapes on her knees and stuck out his tongue to lick them.
“Ah, don’t touch it, it hurts so much...”
Tears welled up in Alana’s eyes from the pain.
The big golden retriever looked helpless.
It stood there, barking anxiously several times.
Then, it spotted Stephan standing motionless.
Suddenly, it dashed toward him.
When it reached him, it opened its mouth wide.
“Woof, woof, woof...”
As if begging him for help.
Stephan frowned, narrowing his dark eyes as he glared disapprovingly at the large golden retriever before him.
It must be this dog, running around recklessly without a care in the world.
Now it’s gotten into trouble, injured the woman who was taking care of it, and thinks it’s a good idea to come running over for help?!
He really wanted to kick it across the room. The golden retriever sensed the man’s hostility. Though it felt intimidated inside, thinking of the injured Alana, it mustered its courage, ran up, and grabbed Stephan’s pant leg, trying to pull him toward Alana.
Seeing this, Alana gritted her teeth. “Ollie, don’t be rude to strangers!”
Stephan, who was being dragged along by the golden retriever and pretending to be very reluctant paused.
What did she just say?
Did she call him a stranger?
Hah!
Fine!
He would act like a stranger!
He couldn’t help but kick the big golden retriever. “Get lost!”
He didn’t kick very hard.
So the golden retriever kept holding onto his pant leg, pulling him forcefully toward Alana.
Stephan shot Alana a cold, displeased glance. “What’s wrong with your dog? Why are you resorting to personal attacks?”
Alana felt too embarrassed to look the man in the eye. “I’m...I’m sorry...It’s not my dog; it belongs to my employer, Luca. That’s why it doesn’t really listen to me.”
Stephan curled his thin lips into a cold smile. “So what?! Just because it’s not your dog, you don’t have to take responsibility?”
She bit her lip and glanced at the giant golden retriever that was clinging tightly to the man’s pant leg.
“Ollie, let go of him.”
Stephan’s tone was icy, like that of an emotionless machine.
“Letting go won’t help, it’s already torn a hole in my slacks with its teeth.”
Alana sighed.
Stephan lowered his gaze to look at her. “These trousers are custom-made and worth over a hundred thousand. Think about how you’re going to compensate me.”
Alana stared at him in stunned disbelief.
A pair of trousers worth over a hundred thousand?!
Even if she sold herself, she couldn’t afford to pay for them...
Stephan looked at the girl sitting on the ground; the scrape on her knee instantly came into sharp focus in his eyes.
He hadn’t noticed from a distance just now, her knee was that badly injured.
A patch of skin had been scraped away, and blood was still seeping out.
Besides her knees, the palms of her hands seemed to have suffered some scrapes as well. Just seeing her injuries, Stephan felt an uncontrollable ache in his chest.
He clenched and unclenched his fist, but he couldn’t control himself. He bent down and picked up the girl from the ground.
Alana was suddenly lifted into the man’s arms, and her beautiful eyes instantly filled with confusion. “Wa...what are you doing?”
Stephan lowered his gaze to the girl in his arms; his eyes were deep, bottomless.
His deep voice was like November ice, unbearably cold.
“Come home with me. Pay for my dress pants, and then I’ll let you go! If you dare to run... I’ll call the police!”
The man’s threat worked.
Alana bit her lip, too afraid to say a word, and could only let the man carry her as they walked step by step toward his home.
The big orange cat was nestled in her arms.
The big golden retriever let go of the man’s pant leg, wagging its head and sticking out its tongue as it followed behind.
******
Stephan carried Alana over and sat her down on his gray sofa.
She tried to shift her position, but was immediately pinned down by the man’s long fingers on her shoulders.
“Sit still. Don’t move.”
Alana froze immediately.
However, sitting on his sofa, a place where he had once pinned her down, she couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy.
Seeing that the girl was sitting quietly and still, Stephan turned and walked toward the dining room.
Alana watched the man’s aloof back recede, her heart filled with unease.
