Chapter 82: Chapter 82 No chance between us
Cynthia snapped, “You could ask how old Darla is, where she went to school, where she graduated from, what she’s doing for work now, and how her job is going...”
Seeing this, Darla chimed in, “I’m twenty-five this year, and I graduated from Columbia University’s medical school. I’m currently working as a surgeon at a top-tier hospital in the city with Aunt Cynthia.”
Cynthia, unable to contain her curiosity, asked, “Darla dear, what kind of guy do you like? Do you like someone like my son?”
Darla glanced at Stephan, a faint blush spreading across her cheeks.
She replied demurely, “Well, I suppose I’ll have to get to know him better to find out.”
Cynthia sensed there was a chance and laughed, “No problem, you two have plenty of time to get to know each other.”
After saying that, she turned to Stephan.
“Son, so what about Darla...”
Before she could finish, the man spoke in a calm tone.
“I don’t like her.”
Cynthia’s face froze.
She hadn’t even finished speaking yet, why was he in such a hurry?!
Was he in such a hurry to be reincarnated?
Besides, just because he doesn’t like her now doesn’t mean he won’t like her later!
Don’t be so absolute about everything!
Cynthia smiled and tried to smooth things over for Stephan. “Darla, don’t get the wrong idea. What my son means is, he doesn’t like taking things slowly, he likes to get to know someone as quickly as possible.”
Darla felt a moment of awkwardness, then laughed in relief, “Oh, I see. So that’s it.”
She glanced at the handsome, yet cool and reserved man, and a faint blush spread across her cheeks.
“Although I’m pretty busy at the hospital, as long as you ask me out, I’ll make time as soon as possible to go on a date with you. Chatting, dining out, or watching a movie, anything works. You just make the plans.”
It was clear that Darla was quite taken with Stephan, she’d even started planning their dates.
Cynthia felt that this blind date was practically a sure thing, and she gave Stephan a subtle nod.
“Son, make your intentions clear.”
Stephan actually did speak up: “Miss Gordon, I’m sorry, but I’m not interested in you. So let’s just forget about the date.”
Darla swallowed.
Cynthia couldn’t help but glare at him.
Wait, what exactly is wrong with Darla?
Her background, education, looks, and manners, she’s got it all. How could he possibly not be interested?!
Darla found it hard to believe. “Mr. Hudson, this is the first time we’ve met, and you’ve already decided you’re not interested in me? We haven’t even really gotten to know each other yet...”
“No need to get to know each other. I’m the type who goes by first impressions. If I don’t like you at first sight, I certainly won’t come to like you later.”
Darla paused for a moment. “So, Mr. Hudson, you believe in love at first sight?”
Stephan nodded, slightly. “Pretty much.”
Darla bit her lip and couldn’t help but say, “Love at first sight is certainly nice, but love
that grows over time is even more fulfilling.”
Stephan’s tone was extremely flat. “Miss Gordon, you’re right. But if you didn’t even have a favorable impression of me from the start, would you be willing to grow fond of me over time?”
Darla was at a loss for words and couldn’t answer right away.
If she were to be honest with herself, if she hadn’t felt even the slightest attraction to Stephan when she saw his picture, she wouldn’t have even agreed to meet him, let alone be willing to let love grow over time.
It was precisely because she was interested in him that she had agreed to come here and meet him at Aunt Cynthia’s request.
Darla asked, “So, does that mean there’s absolutely no chance for me with you?”
Did he really have absolutely no interest in her?
“Yes.”
His answer was without hesitation.
Darla was instantly devastated, her expression turning grim.
After all, she had plenty of suitors, which proved she was both outstanding and charming.
But most of them were simply unable to win her over, since she wasn’t interested in any of them, she had rejected them all without mercy.
She wanted to find a man she was interested in.
And this man had just appeared, but he wasn’t interested in her.
And he had flat-out rejected her.
One can only imagine how upset she felt.
Cynthia couldn’t stand it anymore. “Son, rein it in a bit. Don’t go too far.”
Stephan remained expressionless.
How was he going too far?
He was just telling the truth.
If you don’t like someone, you reject them, was there anything wrong with that?
Darla didn’t want to lose face completely. “Mr. Hudson, don’t speak so definitively. Perhaps I’m the exception, the one who might make you fall for me over time. You never know.”
She didn’t think she was lacking in any way; as long as she was willing to put in the effort, she believed she could win a man over.
After all, he’s never been in a relationship, has he?
Stephan calmly dismissed her. “You won’t be that exception. Because I’ve already met a girl I fell for at first sight.”
Darla’s expression shifted, then she seemed to think of something and couldn’t help but laugh.
“That’s impossible. Aunt Cynthia said you’ve never had a girlfriend, that you’ve never been with a woman, and that you’re still a virgin.”
Stephan frowned and shot a displeased glance at Cynthia.
So that was how his mother goes around badmouthing her own son?!
Cynthia retorted irritably, “What are you looking at? Did I say anything wrong?”
Stephan scoffed.
Not only was she wrong, she was completely off the mark.
He snorted coldly. “Mom, have you been crawling under my bed every night to spy on me? How else would you know that I’m still a virgin or not?”
Besides, even if he was a virgin, did she really need to broadcast it to the whole world?
Didn’t she think of his pride?!
Cynthia’s words got stuck in her throat.
Fine, this son had left her, his mother, speechless.
Stephan glanced at Darla and continued, “Miss Gordon, I do have a girl I like. Believe it or not, it’s up to you. And whether you believe it or not, there’s absolutely no chance between us.”
