Chapter 81: Chapter 81 Stiff tone

“Mom.”

Cynthia’s stiff tone came through the phone, “Come home for dinner tonight.”

Stephan replied. “Okay.”

Cynthia was surprised that he agreed readily without arguing but she didn’t push it.

Maybe she was lucky this time.

So she hummed in acknowledgment and hung up.

Stephan frowned. She called just to tell him to come home for dinner?

That was a bit strange.

*********

Meanwhile, at the hospital.

As soon as Cynthia hung up the phone, she smiled at the young woman in a white lab coat standing next to her and said,

“I’ve already let my son know. He’s coming home for dinner tonight. After you finish work this afternoon, come home with me so you can have a proper chat with him.”

The girl nodded shyly. “Okay.”

She had seen Cynthia’s son in a photo, the twenty-eight years old, the CEO of a publicly traded company, dressed in a suit and tie, exuding the austere, self-restrained aura of a business elite. Rumor had it that he’d never been in a relationship and had never been with a woman.

In other words, he was pure and untouched, still a virgin.

A man who keeps himself so pure and untainted was rare in this world; she simply had to go and meet him.

********

Around 7:00 p.m.

In the living room of Hudson Mansion.

Cynthia was chatting happily with Darla.

As they chatted, she kept glancing at the clock. “That good-for-nothing, why hasn’t he come home yet? If he doesn’t come home soon, the food will get cold.”

Darla smiled, her expression gentle and composed.

“Auntie, don’t worry. He must have been held up by some urgent business at the office.”

Cynthia frowned. “Forget it, I’m going to call and ask. He promised me he’d come home for dinner after work. How late is it now? No matter how busy he is at work, he has to make time to come home for dinner!”

Cynthia was just about to pull out her phone to make a call.

Suddenly, the sound of screeching brakes came from outside.

Cynthia immediately put her phone down, a smile spreading across her face.

“He must be here!”

Darla, on the other hand, looked a bit flustered.

She stared nervously toward the doorway.

Seeing Darla nervously clutching the hem of her skirt, Cynthia said with a chuckle,

“Don’t be nervous. My son may seem serious and aloof on the surface, but he’s actually warm-hearted. Once you get to know him, you’ll see his warm side.”

“Okay.”

Just as Darla nodded, she noticed a tall, slender figure in black walking in at a leisurely pace.

The man had striking, chiseled features and an exceptionally fine bone structure.

He had sharp, arched eyebrows and starry eyes, with a high, straight nose.

Every feature was exquisitely refined, without a single flaw.

With broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long, slender legs, his physique rivaled that of a model.

The well-tailored black suit he wore exuded the composure and refined elegance of a mature man.

In every respect, the man appeared flawless; aside from his slightly aloof expression, there was nothing to criticize.

Darla stared at the man’s handsome features and couldn’t help but blush.

She hadn’t expected him to be even more handsome in person than in the photos.

She had thought the man in the photo was already absurdly handsome and assumed it had been heavily retouched.

She hadn’t expected that he actually didn’t photograph well, the photos had made him look less attractive than he really was.

Stephan noticed the woman sitting beside his mother, dressed in a form-fitting

emerald-green cheongsam, exuding a gentle and virtuous demeanor.

Her long, lustrous hair was pinned up with a hairpin, exuding the gentle grace of a well-bred young lady.

The woman was looking his way, her eyes betraying a touch of a young girl’s shyness, the meaning was clear without words.

Cynthia glanced at Darla, noticing the shyness in her eyes. She couldn’t help but smile and nod, then turned to Stephan.

“Stephan, you’re back. This is the girl I’ve wanted to introduce to you several times. Her name is Darla Gordon; she’s my colleague and has a wonderful personality.”

Darla was the first to greet him, speaking politely and gently, “Hello, Mr. Hudson.”

Stephan expression remained impassive. “Hello.”

As clever as he was, how could he not see through his mother’s intentions?

But he was afraid he would disappoint her, he had no interest in the woman she’d chosen for him.

Cynthia had been worrying herself sick over her son’s marriage prospects.

Seeing Stephan standing motionless, with no sign of him approaching the young woman to strike up a conversation, she grew so anxious she wanted to grab him by the ear and pull him over.

“Don’t just stand there, come sit down and get to know Darla properly.”

Darla was visibly shy.

Stephan paused for a moment, then walked over and sat down, though he sat quite a distance away from Darla.

Seeing this, Darla couldn’t help but glare at her son. “Why are you sitting so far away? It’s hard to even have a conversation!”

Darla spoke with thoughtful consideration, “It’s okay, Auntie. We’ve just met; it’s normal for strangers to keep their distance.”

Cynthia smiled. Seeing how well-behaved and sensible Darla was, she felt even more

pleased with her.

She just couldn’t figure out what her son was thinking.

Still, she thought to herself, Darla was beautiful and carried herself with the grace of a well-bred young lady; surely her son wouldn’t have anything to complain about.

Cynthia glanced at Stephan again, smiling warmly. “Son, look at Darla. She has such a

lovely personality, it’s the perfect complement to your aloof nature.”

Stephan’s handsome face remained cold and distant, and his thin lips twitched slightly. “Mom, just get to the point. I have things to do later and don’t have time to waste with you two.”

Cynthia’s expression darkened instantly. “How dare you speak to me like that! It’s Darla’s first day at our house, you could at least be a little polite to the young lady.”

Stephan sighed. “Fine. How do you want me to be polite to her?”

Cynthia replied, “Have a proper chat with her and get to know each other better.”

Stephan nodded indifferently and simply said, “Alright.”

Then he turned to Darla. “Miss Gordon, I’m currently doing business with a Chinese investor and I happen to like the country, China very much so let’s talk about it, when was China’s first hybrid rice variety developed?”

Darla was still nervous about what questions Stephan might ask her, but she never expected that his very first question would leave her speechless.

“Huh? Huh?”

He grimaced. “Don’t you know? I’ll tell you the answer: in 1973, Yuan Longping and his assistants successfully cultivated the

first hybrid indica rice.”

Darla felt awkward. “Oh, I...I see.”

He continued. “Then tell me, when was China’s first atomic bomb detonated?”

Darla gasped.

How was she supposed to know that?

Not only Darla couldn’t stand it anymore, but Cynthia couldn’t stand it either.

Are these the kinds of questions a normal person would ask on a blind date?!

Cynthia glared at him. “You brat, can’t you ask questions that normal people can

actually discuss and answer?!”

What was with all this talk about hybrid rice and the first missile?

Was he here to test the girl on history of another country?!

Stephan replied calmly, “Then what should I ask?”
