Chapter 166: Chapter 166 Might consider

“If you think he’s a good person and his family is decent, you might consider marrying him.”

Alana nodded.

But deep down, she felt she couldn’t spend the rest of her life married to him. She didn’t want to get greedy and wish for that.

Right now, she just wanted to date him and see how things went for a while.

As for marriage, there were just too many things to consider; she didn’t dare to think about it.

Her aunt-in-law wasn’t keen on Alana marrying someone from too far away.

“Lana, your boyfriend lives too far away. Why not break up with him and find someone here in our little county town?”

“If you’re close by, your families can help each other out. If you marry so far away, if anything happens, help from afar won’t be enough to put out a fire nearby!”

Alana replied, “Auntie, I’ve only just started dating. I haven’t thought about marriage yet.”

They didn’t even know she had dated Cole in college. Well, she wanted them to think this was her first relationship.Afterall, things with Cole had ended badly.

To think she even dreamt of marrying Cole. That was why she couldn’t bring herself to want more with Stephan.

She didn’t want her expectations to get crushed again.

Her uncle’s wife said, “Oh, I’m just worried you’ll waste your prime years. Why not come back home and find a man to marry? Do you really have to look so far away? Besides, is that guy you’re seeing reliable? What if he doesn’t have a job or any income source? Being with him would just be a waste of your youth. You might as well listen to me, break up with him, and find someone reliable, wealthy, and with a stable income, it’s better than just picking someone random out there!”

Alana said, “I think he’s pretty great.”

Her aunt-in-law snapped, “What good does it do that you think he’s nice? No matter how nice he is, how could he compare to someone your family picks out for you? It’s your family who has your best interests at heart. They’re sincere with you and wouldn’t joke around with your lifelong marriage!”

Alana frowned, not knowing what to say.

She was sick and tired of this excuse that they were doing it for her own good.

But every time she tried to argue back, her uncle’s wife always had a reason to shoot her down.

Their views were too different; no matter how much she argued, no one would see her side.

She decided not to say anything.

Grandma interrupted, “All right, let’s not talk about this anymore. I’m tired; let me get some rest.”

As soon as Grandma mentioned resting, the others promptly found excuses to leave.

In the end, only Alana remained to keep her company.

Grandma couldn’t help but mutter;

“What a bunch of ungrateful brats. I raised them for nothing.”

Alana sighed. “Grandma, please be careful from now on. You’re getting older; you shouldn’t be working in the fields like that anymore.”

Grandma snapped, “It’s not like I want to! If I don’t work, do you think those ungrateful brats will take care of me in my old age? Just look at them, the moment something happened to me, they just called you back and that was it. Every single one of them made up their own excuses and ignored me!”

“And your mother’s no better. She abandoned you over a decade ago and hasn’t come back to see me or you even once. Not a single word from her all these years, someone who didn’t know might think she’d died out there!”

As she spoke, Grandma’s eyes welled up with tears.

Back when Alana’s mother abandoned her and left, Grandma had a huge fight with

her.

She told her, “If you abandon Alana, you’ll never be allowed to set foot in this house again.”

Little did she know that once she left, she wouldn’t return for nearly fifteen years.

A full fifteen years, not a single word.

They didn’t even know if she was still alive.

Alana said nothing, but simply handed her grandmother a tissue and gently wiped

away her tears.

“Grandma, wipe your tears.”

Seeing how obedient and thoughtful Alana was, Grandma’s heart ached even more, and her tears flowed even more freely.

“Oh, Lana, you’ve really had it rough.”

How could they have had the heart to abandon such a good child?

Alana gave a faint smile. “It’s not hard. Having Grandma to love me is enough though.”

Grandma sighed. But she was getting old; she couldn’t keep doting on her granddaughter forever.

Who knows, one day, she might just kick the bucket and leave this world...

Alana stayed with her grandmother for a long time. Only after her grandmother grew tired and fell asleep did she have a chance to go out to a restaurant and order a bowl of spicy noodles for herself.

While eating her noodles, she noticed some unanswered messages on her phone and replied to them one by one.

Stephan asked her how her grandmother was doing.

Alana replied.

[She’s doing okay, but she just had a minor surgery and is feeling a bit weak.]

Stephan asked again.

[Do you need my help? Should I arrange for an orthopedic doctor to take a look?]

After a brief pause, fearing Alana might think it was an inconvenience, he added,

[My mom is a doctor; she knows some well-known orthopedic specialists who might be able to help your grandmother.]

Alana smiled. [No need. The doctors here are sufficient.]

Stephan chuckled, [Alright, but if you ever need help, just let me know. Your boyfriend is always on standby.]

Alana felt a warm glow in her heart and couldn’t help but compliment him. [What a great boyfriend I have]

Attached was a cute little bunny emoji.

To Stephan, it looked absolutely adorable. The corners of his mouth curled upward involuntarily; that single compliment, “Great boyfriend,” made him feel absolutely elated inside.

[If you think your boyfriend is so great, then hurry up and marry him, get added to his household registry, and enjoy his greatness for life]

Alana’s eyelashes fluttered.

Marry him?

How can something like that come true?

After just a little over ten days of knowing him, she already felt he was out of her league. Besides, she didn’t plan on getting married anymore, so she couldn’t make any promises to him.

[I need to go back to the hospital to see my grandmother. That’s all for now. Let’s talk’again when I have time.]

Stephan pouted.

She didn’t answer his question directly.

Something was up!

But no rush. No matter how big the problem, he’s always managed to overcome it.

This minor issue will be resolved in due time.

[Don’t overwork yourself. Make sure to get some rest.]

Alana’s eyes stung slightly.

Thinking about how she’d rushed back after a long, tiring journey, not a single person had truly asked if she was tired from the trip or if she needed to rest.

Except for Grandma.

But now, it seemed there was one more person who truly cared about her.

After finishing her noodles, Alana packed up a bowl of light meat congee to take home.

Suddenly, her phone rang.

She picked up her phone and saw it was Cole calling.

She frowned slightly, thought for a moment, and decided to answer.

As soon as she answered, Cole asked with concern, “Lana, how is your grandmother doing?”

She paused for a moment before speaking, “It’s not looking good. She might have to stay in the hospital for about two weeks.”

Cole frowned. “In that case, then you...”

Alana couldn’t help but ask, “Manager Cole, could I take a couple more days off?I’d like to stay a few more days to take care of my grandmother.”

Cole paused for a moment. “Sure.”

Alana replied politely, “Thank you.”

Hearing her polite response, Cole couldn’t help but sigh. “There’s no need to be so formal between us. Lana, I genuinely want to help you. If there’s anything you need, just let me know. I’ll do whatever I can.”

Alana pressed her lips together, unsure what to say, and simply nodded.

A brief silence fell.

Neither of them knew how to end or continue the conversation.

Alana was the first to break the silence. “Manager Cole I have to go. I’ll hang up now.”

Cole furrowed his brow. “Lana, we’re not at the office right now. Don’t keep calling me ‘Manager Cole. Can you just call me Cole or Coco?”

Alana lowered her eyes. Remembering that he had just agreed to approve her leave, she gave a faint “Mm-hmm” and said, “Goodbye.”
