Chapter 165: Chapter 165 Need to work
The relatives felt that for a young woman, work was work no matter where she was so why bother trying to make it in a big city?
Besides, once she was of age, she’d find a husband, have children, and be a full-time housewife, why would she need to work outside the home?
Several relatives said exactly this to Alana’s face right there in the hospital room.
And that was precisely why they’d urged her to come back. Alana remained silent, saying nothing.
If she opened her mouth, she wouldn’t stand a chance against these seven or eight highly vocal critics.
The most sensible thing to do was to say nothing.
Her grandmother, however, disagreed.
“I only broke my arm, I’m not completely disabled, who says I’m unable to take care of myself!? Besides, even if I did need care, is it really up to a granddaughter to take care of me? What good was it raising all of you, my sons and daughters, if this is how you treat me?”
“I’ve got a few scrapes, and every one of you is making excuses and refusing to take care of me. You actually called my granddaughter to rush home, quit her job, and take care of me for a year or two? Do you have any shame? I’ve raised a bunch of ungrateful brats, every one of you has no conscience left. Oh my, this is making my chest hurt from the anger...”
One of her uncle’s wife didn’t take this very well. “Mom, didn’t you raise Lana yourself? You’re injured, isn’t it only natural for her to come back and take care of you?”
Her aunt chimed in, “Exactly. We’d love to take care of you too, but with several kids to look after at home, we just don’t have the time!”
Her uncle said, “I have to go to work to earn a living and support the family. This household can’t function without my income.”
Anyway, they were all so busy they had no time to look after Grandma, an elderly woman.
Grandma laughed bitterly. “So you all have things to do, but Lana doesn’t? Your job is a job, but does Lana not have a job? If she doesn’t work, she won’t have any money. Are you going to give her money to spend?” When she said that, everyone else fell silent.
Although they weren’t a wealthy family, they lacked for nothing, they had everything they needed.
But the idea of setting aside money to support a Alana felt like a knife to the heart.
In their eyes, Alana was nothing more than a burden abandoned by her parents, a girl they’d rejected, openly. Her mother wasn’t even directly their sibling. She was a cousin who lived close to Grandma.
Their grandmother couldn’t bear to see her alone and helpless, so she insisted on taking her home to raise her.
And she’d raised her all the way to this age.
Though the old woman treated Alana as her own and warned them to treat her as family, she was practically like a stranger to them.
Now that her grandmother had broken her arm, it’s only natural for her to stay and take care of her.
After all, caring for a person in their seventies or eighties was a huge hassle, and no one wanted to be stuck with that burden.
Seeing the tension in the air, Alana quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
“Grandma, please don’t say anything for now. You just had surgery; you need to rest properly.”
Seeing her grandmother so frail yet still getting so upset, she felt a pang of sympathy.
Grandma’s tone softened slightly.
“You’re the only one who cares about me, Lana. You may not be my granddaughter directly, but you’re dearer to me than my own!”
Everyone present knew exactly what she was referring to.
The old woman was indeed partial to Alana, she favored her far more than her own grandchildren.
Given the extent of this favoritism, she might even be included in the will.
Her uncle’s wife suddenly spoke up, “Alana, you’re getting older. Shouldn’t you start looking for a boyfriend and get married soon? I have plenty of eligible bachelors around here. Why don’t you just stay here instead of going back? Find someone you like and get married right away. Otherwise, once you get old , you won’t have any luck finding a partner.”
Her aunt chimed in, mentioning that so-and-so, her neighbor, was currently on a blind date.
“He’s not that old, around thirty. He’s a programmer with a car and a house, and he makes over ten thousand a month. He’s in high demand. Why don’t we set up a time for you two to meet?”
Alana declined, “No, thanks. I don’t do blind dates.”
Her uncle’s wife couldn’t help but urge her, “You’re already twenty-two. Almost twenty-three. The girl next door, who’s the same age as you, already has a son who’s two years old. She lives the good life, staying home every day to take care of the baby and look after her in-laws. She doesn’t have to work so hard. How easy is that?”
“Unlike you, you’re still drifting around, working so hard. Why not just find someone to marry, let your husband support you, and settle down already!”
Alana blinked.
Get married, have kids, and become a full-time housewife?!
To her, that didn’t sound like a life of luxury, it sounded like a life of suffering.
Grandma frowned. “What do you mean, ‘get married’? And why are you age-shaming someone this young? She’s only twenty-two and had just graduated from college, why should she get married so soon?! She has her own dreams to chase.”
“There’s no rush to get married. Good men are hard to come by these days. She needs to look carefully and choose wisely, we can’t end up with another scumbag like her father, who not only cheated on his wife but also abandoned his family.”
Her uncle’s wife said, “I’m just helping her pick one out. Mom, don’t worry, the guys I know are all people I’ve thoroughly vetted. They’re top-notch; I guarantee there won’t be any mistakes!”
Grandma frowned and said, “You should ask Lana’s opinion on this. Don’t make decisions for her. You’re just taking advantage of the fact that she has no one around to protect her.”
To be honest, she was getting older and hoped to see someone by Alana’s side who could keep her company and take care of her.
Her uncle’s wife immediately said, “I’m asking her right now, Lana, why don’t you stay and get to know a few of the men I know? What do you think?”
Alana paused for a moment, then replied politely, “Auntie, thank you for your concern, but I really don’t need that.”
Her uncle’s was a bit annoyed, upset that Alana didn’t appreciate her kindness.
“Oh, come on! I’m concerned about your future marriage, I’m worried you won’t be able to get married later on, so I’m introducing you to some great men. Why aren’t you being more cooperative?”
Alana replied calmly, “Right now, I feel my career is more important. I’d like to put matters of marriage on hold for the time being.”
After a brief pause, she added, “Besides, I’m already seeing someone, so there’s no need for you to worry so much.”
Everyone was taken aback. They never expected that Alana’s return would bring such shocking news.
Her grandmother immediately asked, “You really have a boyfriend?”
Alana nodded. “Yes, we’ve only been dating for a few days.”
Her grandmother asked, “Where is he from?”
“He’s from the city.”
“What does he look like? How old is he?"
“He’s pretty handsome, and he’s twenty-eight.”
“What does he do for a living? How many people are in his family?”
Alana was at a loss for words.
She didn’t exactly know what Stephab did for a living; she only knew he wasn’t short
on money.
As for his family background, she hadn’t even asked about that.
Alana bit her lip and said, “Grandma, we just started dating. I don’t know that much
about him yet.”
Grandma frowned, thinking her granddaughter was too naive.
“Silly girl, you’re already dating him and you haven’t even figured out who he really is? Aren’t you afraid of being deceived?”
Alana bit her lip. “He’s a really nice person. He wouldn’t deceive me.”
It was she, however, who had yet to be honest with him about her family situation. Because she didn’t dare to be honest herself, she didn’t dare to ask him about his either. Her grandmother couldn’t help but ask,
“Do you have a photo of him? Let me see it, I know a thing or two about reading faces.”
Alana swallowed.
She didn’t have a photo of him, she hadn’t even taken one on purpose.
No, wait, she remembered. There were indeed photos of him on her phone.
But those were the abs photos he’d sent her, the kind that made her nose bleed just looking at them. There was no way she could show those to Grandma.
So, blushing, Alana said, “Not yet. I’ll take one for you when I get back.”
Not seeing the photos, Grandma felt a little disappointed, but after thinking about it, she realized her granddaughter was all grown up, and it was only natural for her to be dating.
She was getting on in years, so it was not really her place to interfere, but she could only advise, “Get to know him well. If you feel he’s lacking in any department or makes you uncomfortable, break it off right away.”
