Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Insisting on One Thing

In that instant, Xie Huaizheng felt his body go rigid.

He lowered his gaze to the girl who had suddenly thrown her arms around him, and his heart instantly began to pound.

The scent of jasmine, her soft body... From his angle, all he could see was the top of her fluffy head.

"Let go," Xie Huaizheng said in a low voice.

But Su Zhaozhao seemed unfazed. "I was terrified. I need to hug you to calm down. Can you please not push me away?"

Su Zhaozhao looked at Xie Huaizheng with an innocent expression, her arms wrapped tightly around him.

Xie Huaizheng didn’t force her away, worried he might hurt her.

Xiao Yuanming, who had followed Xie Huaizheng in, couldn’t help but gasp when he saw the scene.

’This is the first time I’ve ever seen the battalion commander hugging a woman.’

’But then, this isn’t just any woman—this is the battalion commander’s fiancée.’

’It’s perfectly normal for the commander to let her hug him.’

Xiao Yuanming felt a pang of longing. ’When will I find such a wonderful wife for myself?’

Su Zhaozhao pressed her cheek against Xie Huaizheng’s abs, feeling their defined texture through the thin fabric of his shirt.

A brilliant smile she couldn’t suppress spread across her face.

’Isn’t this a blessing in disguise?’

’Xie Huaizheng probably feels guilty that I got hurt, so he isn’t even pushing me away.’

After hugging him for a while longer, Su Zhaozhao finally let go of Xie Huaizheng.

Xie Huaizheng got a full report on Su Zhaozhao’s situation, and the police came to take her statement.

On the way back, Su Zhaozhao looked down at her bandaged hand. "What am I going to do with my hand injured like this? It’s so inconvenient to live alone. Why don’t you come live with me?"

"Aren’t you afraid of gossip?" Xie Huaizheng thought Su Zhaozhao was unbelievably naive to even suggest such a thing.

Su Zhaozhao shook her head. "I’m not afraid."

She seemed so carefree. Sometimes, Xie Huaizheng really wondered how on earth the Su Family had raised a daughter like her.

However, when Xie Huaizheng’s gaze fell on Su Zhaozhao’s heavily bandaged hand, he fell silent.

"I have to leave for a mission in two days. It’s not safe for you here. I should send you home."

Hearing this, Su Zhaozhao immediately shook her head. "No! I can’t go back!"

’I stole money to run away. If I go back now, I’ll have to deal with that family of weirdos again. No way.’

"Then what are you going to do in your current state?"

’Even if I really am her fiancé, we’re not married. How could I possibly live with her to take care of her?’

"It’s fine. I’ll wait here for you to come back," Su Zhaozhao said.

It was the first time a girl had been so direct and frank about her feelings for him. For a moment, Xie Huaizheng was actually a little surprised.

’Does Su Zhaozhao really like me this much?’

’To like me to this extent...’

"But if you run into danger here, it will be very difficult for me to explain it to your parents. Besides, I’m leaving on a mission for a week. It’s not safe for you to be here all by yourself with no one you know."

"It’s fine. I know Brother Xiao, Chief Liu, Aunt Yun, and Wang Guofu. That’s more than enough," Su Zhaozhao said. "If you’re worried, I won’t leave the guest house at all while you’re gone. I’ll just have Brother Xiao bring me my meals. How about that?"

"No, Su Zhaozhao. I really think you should go home. If you must, I’ll take you back myself. As it happens, my mission is near Jiang City. We can travel part of the way together. I’ll have a word with your parents, and they won’t be able to force you to marry anyone else."

Su Zhaozhao immediately shook her head. "No."

’The trouble at home is much worse than this.’

Even after what had happened today, Su Zhaozhao didn’t feel like she was in much danger.

’What’s so dangerous about this?’

’I’ve actually been through much more dangerous things.’

’Whatever doesn’t kill me will only make me stronger.’

"Do you really want to marry me that badly?" Xie Huaizheng’s tone was laced with impatience.

’What is with this girl? Always thinking about marrying me.’

"Yes. Because besides you, I don’t have anyone else."

As she said this, her face was full of grievance, like an abandoned kitten.

Seeing Su Zhaozhao like this stirred a strange feeling inside Xie Huaizheng.

In all his years, this was probably the first time anyone had ever been so dependent on him.

Although her dependence had come out of nowhere, Xie Huaizheng found, to his surprise, that he quite enjoyed it.

"Are you sure you want to register our marriage here and now?"

"Aren’t you willing?" Su Zhaozhao retorted.

"Get married without your parents knowing, and without my parents knowing? Marriage is a lifelong commitment, Comrade Su Zhaozhao. Don’t be reckless."

The man’s gaze was sharp, as if trying to force her to back down.

But Su Zhaozhao shook her head. "Of course, I know it’s for a lifetime. I thought about it very carefully on my way here to find you."

Xie Huaizheng took a deep breath, then reached out and pinched Su Zhaozhao’s cheek.

He didn’t know why, but looking at her puffy cheeks always made him want to give them a squeeze.

The skin was so soft and smooth, he found it hard to pull his hand away.

"After I get back from my mission, we’ll have a proper talk."

’I need to think about whether I should marry her or not.’

Su Zhaozhao broke into a smile. "Okay, I’ll wait for you."

Xie Huaizheng walked Su Zhaozhao back to her room, where she grabbed a few things.

"Here’s some food, a few pastries you can take with you. And this is medicine. It’s very effective. If you get hurt and start bleeding, just apply it, and it’ll stop the bleeding right away."

These were, in fact, all items from her spatial dimension.

Even the most basic products from her dimension were far more effective than anything from the outside world.

For example, when Su Zhaozhao had been injured before, she had applied a tiny bit of this medicine, and the bleeding had stopped instantly, with the wound healing much faster as well.

Xie Huaizheng looked at the items clutched in the girl’s small hand, then his gaze shifted to her other hand, where a wound was wrapped in bandages.

He had asked the doctor about it. Su Zhaozhao had nearly had her throat slit; thankfully, she had reacted quickly enough to grab the attacker’s knife.

But as a result, her hand had been severely cut.

She was so badly injured, yet she acted as if it were nothing.

She looked so delicate and fragile, but in reality, she was stronger than anyone.

’How could I ever have thought she couldn’t handle hardship?’

’So I can misjudge people too.’ Xie Huaizheng’s expression grew more profound.
