Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Wrapping Around His Waist
Xie Huaizheng was summoned to the commander’s office. The commander looked at Xie Huaizheng with a serious expression. "There’s a mission I need to assign to you. You’ll probably be gone for about a week."
Xie Huaizheng was taken aback, but he still saluted. "Understood."
"I heard about what happened in the cafeteria yesterday," the commander said suddenly. "Your fiancée came to see you?"
Xie Huaizheng’s body tensed for a moment.
The commander’s name was Li Jian Country. He was in his forties and had served as a comrade-in-arms with Xie Huaizheng’s father.
Although they had a decent relationship, Li Jian Country was a man who clearly separated his personal and professional lives. Ordinarily, he didn’t show much favoritism toward Xie Huaizheng.
When it came to official business, he was always very rational.
However, he would occasionally show concern for his personal life.
Xie Huaizheng nodded. "Yes."
"How long is your fiancée staying here?"
Xie Huaizheng thought for a moment. "She plans to stay for a month, but I suspect she’ll go back before then."
Li Jian Country stood up, walked over to Xie Huaizheng, and clapped him on the shoulder. "Huai Zheng, if you leave on this mission, what will she do?"
Xie Huaizheng hadn’t actually considered this. "I’ll tell her to go back."
’After all, if I’m not here, is Su Zhaozhao really going to keep staying here?’
But this also meant their bet couldn’t continue.
Xie Huaizheng furrowed his brow, feeling surprisingly annoyed.
He couldn’t quite pinpoint where this annoyance was coming from.
Xie Huaizheng added, "Of course, it’s up to her. If she’s willing to wait, she can stay and wait. If not, I’ll buy her a ticket and take her to the train station."
After hearing Xie Huaizheng’s words, Li Jian Country couldn’t help but laugh.
For some reason, he had a feeling that Xie Huaizheng was finally starting to get it.
Xie Huaizheng’s father had also spoken to him about his son, saying that this child was the one in the family who worried him the most.
He had been sent to the military precisely because he was too much of a spoiled rake at home.
Although he had made a name for himself and achieved great things here, he still refused to listen to his family.
They all felt utterly helpless about it.
They had introduced him to many potential marriage partners, but he didn’t like any of them.
He was even indifferent when Old Jiang’s daughter had a crush on him.
But now, Li Jian Country had discovered a different side to Xie Huaizheng.
’It seems he isn’t completely clueless about relationships after all.’
’He just hadn’t met a girl he liked.’
The two spoke for a while longer before Xie Huaizheng left the office.
Just then, Xiao Yuanming came running over, gasping for breath. When he saw him, he breathed a sigh of relief. "Brother Zheng, thank goodness I finally found you! Something’s happened to Zhaozhao."
"Happened?" Xie Huaizheng’s brow twitched.
’It’s only been half an hour since they parted ways. What could have happened to Su Zhaozhao?’
"Did she offend someone here? Someone attacked her with a knife."
"Where is she now?"
"At the military hospital."
...
Su Zhaozhao sat in the emergency department, letting the doctor bandage her hand.
"My goodness, comrade, this wound is so deep, it’s terrifying! How could you dare to grab his knife with your bare hands?"
Su Zhaozhao sighed. "He was slashing at my throat. If I hadn’t blocked with my hand, my throat would be the one that’s injured."
’I can’t believe that person was so crazy, trying to kill me with a knife in broad daylight.’
’It’s a good thing I dodged quickly, or I’m afraid I’d be a corpse by now.’
The one who hurt her was that street vendor from yesterday.
He was probably furious because his source of income was cut off and he had to go to the Public Security Bureau to pay a fine.
He did something like this in a fit of rage.
Su Zhaozhao had seen her fair share of situations like this.
The doctor bandaging her fell silent, simply feeling sorry for Su Zhaozhao.
Indeed, no matter what, a cut on the hand was better than a slit throat.
One could only say the girl had some nerve. Most people, faced with such a sudden danger, would have probably just dodged instinctively.
But Su Zhaozhao was different. She actually had the guts to grab the knife.
However, her hands were very delicate and tender, without a single callus.
This also meant the wound was a bit deeper than it would be for a normal person.
Su Zhaozhao endured the pain and let the doctor finish treating her wound.
She had actually noticed this problem herself.
Because she often drank the spiritual spring water, her skin had become fine and smooth, and even her hands were free of calluses.
Her skin was too delicate, making her more susceptible to injury than an ordinary person.
Su Zhaozhao couldn’t help but frown.
The sound of footsteps approached, and in the blink of an eye, someone was in front of her.
Su Zhaozhao, who was looking down, saw a pair of military boots.
Her gaze traveled up to a pair of long legs.
And then, she saw the man’s handsome and sharp-featured face.
"You’re here?" Su Zhaozhao was delighted to see Xie Huaizheng appear.
Xie Huaizheng looked at Su Zhaozhao’s tightly wrapped hand and knew that her injury this time must be serious.
He took Su Zhaozhao’s hand, not daring to squeeze too hard.
"How did you get hurt?"
"It was that street vendor from yesterday. But it’s okay, the doctor has already treated it."
Su Zhaozhao waved her hand, looking as if it was no big deal.
But the next moment, Xie Huaizheng’s grip on her hand couldn’t help but tighten.
The pain made Su Zhaozhao gasp. "Ow, don’t squeeze so hard."
She wasn’t someone who was afraid of pain. She had encountered a lot of danger before and had always been fine.
But she realized her current body was indeed more sensitive to pain than before.
’Looks like I’ll have to be more careful from now on.’
Xie Huaizheng loosened his grip on Su Zhaozhao’s hand slightly.
But his expression was still a bit scary, his dark eyes like a bottomless abyss.
Su Zhaozhao found she couldn’t guess what Xie Huaizheng was thinking at all.
After a long moment, Xie Huaizheng let go of her hand and said, "I’m sorry."
Su Zhaozhao made a questioning sound, looking at Xie Huaizheng in confusion.
’Why is he apologizing to me out of nowhere?’
"I should have taken you back to the guest house then."
’If I hadn’t had something to take care of, she wouldn’t have had to face this danger. If I had been there, that person wouldn’t have hurt her.’
Even though Su Zhaozhao’s hand was wrapped tightly in white bandages, Xie Huaizheng still spotted the bloodstained gauze in the trash can with a single glance.
’That must all be from treating her wound.’
Xie Huaizheng’s eyes narrowed.
The next moment, a pair of hands wrapped around his waist, and then the girl’s soft, fluffy head pressed against his abdomen.
"You have the nerve to say that? I was scared to death back there." The girl’s soft voice, tinged with lingering fear, sounded out.
