Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Troublemaker
Xie Huaizheng took the things Su Zhaozhao gave him and said, "Take care of yourself. I’ll have Xiao Yuanming bring you meals every day. If you don’t have to, try not to go out too much."
He didn’t want her to get into trouble again.
Su Zhaozhao immediately nodded. "Don’t worry about me. I think you’re in more danger. You have to be extra careful when you go on your mission."
Su Zhaozhao’s hand subconsciously gripped Xie Huaizheng’s arm.
Xie Huaizheng thought about pulling away, but after a moment’s hesitation, he didn’t.
"Mm, you don’t need to worry about me," he said.
In truth, he didn’t know why he was so patient with Su Zhaozhao.
"I’m leaving the day after tomorrow. For the next two days, I can still bring you your meals. If there’s anything you want, just tell me."
Although he had bought some things for Su Zhaozhao, he wasn’t really sure what girls liked.
He had a younger sister, but his relationship with his family was rather distant.
"Oh, yes. I haven’t dealt with the things you gave me yet," Su Zhaozhao said. "That quilt—did you mean for me to sleep under it? But the weather’s a little hot, so I don’t really need it."
"It’s for you to put on the bed. The bed board here is too hard."
Xie Huaizheng glanced at the injury on Su Zhaozhao’s hand. In the end, he went over, placed the quilt on the bed, and made it for her.
Su Zhaozhao watched from the side as Xie Huaizheng worked. Even doing something like this, the man’s movements were crisp and efficient.
’But then again, considering the regulations in the military, he probably has to do this sort of thing all the time. Is that why he’s so good at it?’
Finally, he even tucked the bedsheet in neatly for her.
This was the first time Xie Huaizheng had ever made a bed for a girl. If Su Zhaozhao’s hand hadn’t been injured, he never would have done such a thing.
At home, he wouldn’t even make his parents’ bed. But now, in the distant Northwest, he was actually making a bed for a girl.
He had brought all these daily necessities for Su Zhaozhao, and now that they were laid out on her bed, they carried the girl’s faint, sweet scent.
It unexpectedly made his heart skip a beat.
After Xie Huaizheng finished making the bed, he said to Su Zhaozhao, "There."
Su Zhaozhao thanked him, "Thank you so much. If you hadn’t helped me, I don’t know what I would’ve done."
"Don’t mention it," Xie Huaizheng said. "Just be careful with your hand for the next few days."
Su Zhaozhao watched Xie Huaizheng leave. Relaxing, she flopped down onto the bed.
Sure enough, with the quilt spread underneath, it was wonderfully soft and comfortable.
It was a far cry from her old mattress, of course, but all in all, it was pretty good.
And Su Zhaozhao was in a great mood, because she knew Xie Huaizheng was starting to let his guard down.
’Keep it up,’ Su Zhaozhao thought. ’Success will be mine soon!’
Su Zhaozhao entered her personal space and drank some spiritual spring water. Her body seemed to feel much better.
The wound didn’t hurt as much anymore.
Sure enough, the spiritual spring water was incredibly potent. Now that she was used to drinking it, she couldn’t stomach regular water anymore.
It just didn’t seem sweet and refreshing enough.
So, Su Zhaozhao simply filled a thermos with spiritual spring water to have on hand whenever she wanted a drink.
That evening, Xie Huaizheng came by again to bring Su Zhaozhao her dinner.
It was food from the cafeteria again: braised eggplant, Big Plate Chicken, and some greens.
"Eat up," Xie Huaizheng said.
Su Zhaozhao smiled at Xie Huaizheng, but then she looked at the pair of chopsticks and frowned. "I’m right-handed. With my hand injured like this, I can’t use chopsticks at all."
As she said this, she even let out a helpless sigh.
Xie Huaizheng paused. He hadn’t thought of that.
It was indeed an oversight on his part.
’Next time, I’ll have to get her a spoon,’ he thought. But it was too late for that now.
"Then you can feed me," Su Zhaozhao said to Xie Huaizheng, her eyes sparkling as if a light had been kindled within them.
Xie Huaizheng hadn’t expected her to say that. He paused, then instinctively refused. "No. I’ll go get the woman at the front desk to help you."
"What’s the big deal? We’re engaged. We’re going to be married in the future. Isn’t this perfectly normal?"
At this, Su Zhaozhao sighed, feigning aggrievement. "Honestly, if you had just escorted me back in the first place, I wouldn’t have run into those bad guys and gotten hurt. At the end of the day, even though I’m the one who came all the way out here, I came here for you. So what’s wrong with you feeding me? We’re engaged anyway, so there’s nothing to be afraid of."
Su Zhaozhao’s words actually swayed him.
’She had a point,’ he thought. He wasn’t exactly one to rigidly follow the rules anyway.
’If a young woman like Su Zhaozhao wasn’t concerned about her own reputation, why should he be concerned for her?’
’Besides, they had already talked things through.’
So, Xie Huaizheng picked up the food container, plucked a piece of meat with the chopsticks, and held it out for Su Zhaozhao.
Su Zhaozhao sat before him, opening her mouth to take each piece of meat that he offered.
As she ate, she admired Xie Huaizheng’s serious expression.
’Observing him from so close, she couldn’t find a single flaw on his face.’
’This man was just too handsome, in that rugged, masculine way.’
The more she looked at him, the more her heart fluttered.
"Alright, stop staring at me so intently. It’s a little unsettling," Xie Huaizheng couldn’t help but say.
Su Zhaozhao immediately broke into a smile. "You’re very handsome, so I can’t help but stare."
’He might look a bit like a rogue, but he actually has a very good sense of propriety.’
’He knows exactly what he can and cannot do.’
’And though he seems laid-back, he’s actually the least spontaneous type of person there is.’
’As expected of a male lead,’ Su Zhaozhao knew. ’A man like this is actually very difficult to win over.’
’But then again, who made her an expert in psychology? From the criminal mind to the average person’s psyche, she knew it all like the back of her hand.’
’If you can win over a man like this, he’ll give you his very life.’
When Su Zhaozhao had finished eating, Xie Huaizheng packed up the food container and said to her, "I’ll be back tomorrow."
"Okay. Thanks for everything." Before he left, Xie Huaizheng also fetched hot water for Su Zhaozhao, telling her she could just wash up in her room.
Even though they were engaged, the fact remained that they were still *un*-married. They couldn’t act the same way a married couple would.
Xie Huaizheng also asked the woman at the front desk to help look after Su Zhaozhao.
The young woman glanced at Xie Huaizheng’s face, a bashful look appearing as she lowered her head and promised, "Okay, don’t worry. I’ll help you look after her."
Xie Huaizheng turned and left.
He had no idea how he had ended up with a little troublemaker like Su Zhaozhao on his hands.
’He’d never been pestered by a girl like this before.’
’And yet, Xie Huaizheng found it... rather amusing.’
