Chapter 6: Chapter 6

"Brother... Brother-in-law, don’t kill me!"

"You think you’re worthy of calling me brother-in-law?"

His fingers and palm tightened at once, a sickening crack.

He tossed the corpse off the city wall without a second glance.

According to his memories, he did have a wife.

A demon named Alice, originally nothing more than a lowly maid serving the Grand Matriarch of the Endless Demonic Domain.

The Grand Matriarch had arranged the marriage at a grand public occasion, with exactly one purpose, to humiliate the Demon Emperor’s useless son in front of the whole domain.

A son of the Great Demon Emperor, married off to a tea-serving maid. For a while, it was the biggest joke in the Demonic Domain.

Even so, Soren had treated her well.

He pitied Alice, a mere maid had no say over her own fate, she could only obey the Grand Matriarch’s arrangements.

He had walked through the rain himself, he didn’t have the heart to break someone else’s umbrella.

She never appreciated any of it.

She knew perfectly well that Soren was a coward who would never amount to anything, and that staying at his side meant sharing his humiliation.

So she used her new status as a stepping stone, knowing full well that the Grand Matriarch would never blame her for it.

Barely days into the marriage, Alice hooked up with Soren’s third brother, Abel.

She would vanish for half a month at a time.

On the rare occasions she came home, she wore a look of open disgust, keeping her distance as if he might stain her.

She seemed to have completely forgotten that she used to be a maid.

The old Soren had been cowardly beyond belief, the kind of coward that made people grind their teeth, he didn’t want trouble with Abel, so he pretended none of it was happening.

But it had long stopped being a secret.

Half the clan mocked him behind his back as the husband whose wife belonged to another man.

With Abel backing her, Alice grew bolder still, she moved her entire extended family into his estate to live in luxury, treating Soren as if he didn’t exist.

Of the hundred or so elderly, weak, and sick servants the Great Demon Emperor had left him, more than half were Alice’s relatives.

Bruce and Arnold had wanted to slaughter them more times than they could count, but they feared offending the Grand Matriarch who had decreed the marriage, and Abel, who stood behind Alice.

To spare Soren more trouble, they swallowed their anger.

Alice’s relatives had never once feared Soren. Until today.

They had watched with their own eyes as he butchered an army of human cultivators, and fear had finally taken root.

This was not the pushover they remembered.

And since the Great Demon Emperor had cut Soren loose, there was no more luxury to squeeze out of staying.

Better to leave, and fast.

They just never expected to run straight into him on their way out.

Bullying an honest man... Soren’s eye twitched, his former self’s life story nearly made him cough up blood.

He seriously suspected it hadn’t been cowardice at all, but pure masochism.

You were hiding Demon Emperor strength that whole time! And you just watched your wife run off with another man?

If anyone dares make me walk in the rain, I won’t just snap their umbrella. I’ll tear their house down and burn their livelihood to ash!

"Soren, you beast! You killed my son! Alice and the Third Demon Venerable will never let you off!" The barrel-waisted old woman gathered her courage and screeched at him.

"You let your daughter parade around like a slut right under my nose, and you think you have the right to speak?"

Soren flicked out a finger, the old woman’s head exploded on the spot.

Carol’s knees hit the ground.

"Son-in-law! Son-in-law, let’s talk this out, there’s no need for violence, right?"

The mere sight of him made Soren’s stomach turn, one slap ended him. "Who exactly is your son-in-law?"

"You, how are you related to Alice?" His gaze slid left, landing on a burly, rugged man.

"R-reporting to the Demon Emperor, I am her cousin..."

Bang, the man toppled backward, eyes wide in death, a hole blown through his forehead.

"And you?"

"I... I... I have absolutely no relation to Alice!" A middle-aged man with a sharp chin and monkey cheeks was on the verge of tears under Soren’s stare.

"Liar."

Soren’s punch went straight through his chest, nearly tearing him in half.

The killing continued. Wherever Soren passed, anyone connected to Alice was wiped from existence.

The groggy Lysara watched it all unfold, unable to keep the shock off her face.

"The rumors were true, you really are a monster who kills without blinking. You wouldn’t even spare your own mother-in-law and father-in-law!"

Soren stopped, he turned, and a single wave of his hand sent her flying.

"Did anyone ask you to speak?"

Lysara spat blood, old wounds tore open beneath new ones, her vision went dark, and she slipped back into death.

Soren hooked a finger and dragged her across the ground, leaving a blood trail behind her.

"Half an hour, at least, before she wakes again, enough time to settle what’s left."

He stared into the distance, eyes brimming with murder.

With a surge of strength, he tore a rift dozens of meters long straight through the air.

Tearing the void was a feat reserved for Emperor Realm experts, Soren had inherited no demonic techniques, raw strength alone was enough.

In an avalanche, no snowflake is innocent, and a grudge that can be repaid today has no business waiting until tomorrow.

He stepped alone into the rift.

A strange ripple washed across the horizon like falling starlight, and the tear sealed itself shut as if it had never existed.

Outside the city gates, Arnold and Bruce watched the rift vanish.

"Master Arnold, where is Master going? Why didn’t he take me along?"

Arnold withdrew his gaze in silence and went back to work, one hand braced against his lower back, the other directing the demonic birds and beasts to devour the corpses strewn across the ground.

Cultivators spent lifetimes consuming spiritual herbs and precious elixirs.

Their flesh and blood had long transcended the mortal, for raising demonic birds and beasts, there was no finer feed.
