Chapter 182: Chapter 123: Preparing for Battle, Part 2

Sensing the changes throughout the fortress, as if it had caught the scent of blood, the shadow of the White Bone Throne swayed and twisted. A Dark Skeleton emerged from within, its gaze sweeping across the surroundings. The inky-black Soul Fire within its sockets showed faint signs of shifting to red.

From within the walls, tall and sturdy figures slowly emerged. They were the Skeleton Ox Demons that guarded the main tower, one of Li Ziyu’s most powerful fighting forces.

...

"Benjamin, the Undead have spotted us!" As they drew closer, Percy, holding a spyglass, could see the entire Undead Fortress with perfect clarity. He saw the tall structure, the raised platforms, the rows of erected shields, and the enormous, menacing ram. He looked down and shouted.

Benjamin answered from below and scrambled up in a few quick movements. He took the spyglass from Percy’s hand, put it to his eye, and peered toward the Undead Fortress.

"Should we reconsider? They don’t seem to be as weakened as you said," Percy said nervously, a hesitant look on his face.

Benjamin lowered the spyglass and glanced at Percy. "Coward. Percy, you’re a coward. You won’t be able to survive in the Otherworld like this!"

"Look, they’ve already raised their shields and revealed their ram. They’re afraid of us. Things aren’t as difficult as you think. If they weren’t afraid of us, why wouldn’t they just send the Undead over? Look around you. Do you see any Undead?"

Percy was taken aback. On second thought, what Benjamin said seemed to have a point. Still, something felt off, but he couldn’t find the words to refute him.

Seeing Percy’s expression, Benjamin cracked a smile with his thick lips, clapped him on the shoulder, and gave it a firm squeeze. "Don’t worry, my friend. We are very strong. It’ll be just like always. Once we take that fortress, I’ll allocate more resources to you to help you develop."

Percy’s eyes lit up, his gaze toward Benjamin filled with gratitude.

Benjamin laughed heartily, slapping the guardrail below. "Release more Wanderers!" he shouted. "Have all my brave and fearless Warriors get ready! We’re going to win a glorious victory!"

The Jackal Wolfman Wanderer was one of the Combat Sequences under Benjamin’s command, their role being that of fortress guards and light Warriors. Wanderers were relatively smaller and thinner than typical Jackal Wolfmen. Their standard equipment consisted of Leather Armor, Crossbow Arrows, and Daggers. They possessed greater Speed and explosive power than other Jackal Wolfmen and excelled at running.

Usually, before a battle, Benjamin would send out the Wanderers to patrol the surroundings. If they encountered enemy scouts, the Wanderers would swarm and attack them.

To deal with the Undead, this time he had released a full 2,000 Wanderers. These creatures ran back and forth around the armored vehicle fortress on all fours. From a distance, they looked like a dense swarm of ants spiraling about.

Benjamin knew he couldn’t stay hidden the moment they began their approach. His fortress was called an armored car, but that only described its shape; it was, in fact, a massive Level 2 fortress. Anyone who wasn’t blind would surely spot it. All he could do was prevent the enemy’s scouts from getting near. Strangely, however, the Undead seemed to have sent out no scouts at all.

And so, the armored vehicle fortress advanced unimpeded until it stopped a short distance from the Undead Fortress. The atmosphere instantly grew tense.

Percy raised his spyglass, peered through a gap in the Light Armor Shield, and saw the structures and the Bone Plate Platform inside. He couldn’t help but gasp. "So many Undead! There are just too many!"

Hearing Percy’s cry of alarm, Benjamin snatched the spyglass and put it to his own eye. The moment he looked, he too drew a sharp breath. ’This is bad,’ he thought.

’I’ve been too arrogant!’

’No wonder they didn’t send out scouts. They were confident in their own formidable power all along!’

Through the spyglass, Benjamin saw the Undead that practically blanketed the platform. They were so densely packed that he knew without counting there had to be tens of thousands. ’But... why do these Undead look so weak?’

’Many of the Undead don’t even have Weapons. Is that normal? Warriors without any weapons equipped?’

Furthermore, these Undead looked listless and lethargic. The Soul Fire in their eye sockets flickered weakly. It wasn’t burning fiercely at all; instead, it was like the tiny flame of a lighter, ready to be extinguished at any moment.

"Benjamin, this isn’t good. They outnumber us several times over! And look at their fortress—those walls won’t be easy to deal with." Percy was starting to get cold feet again. ’The resources are nice, but I don’t want to throw my life away for them.’

Benjamin lowered the spyglass, turned to Percy, and suddenly laughed. "We came to the right place this time."

Benjamin’s words left Percy completely baffled. "What did you discover?"

Pointing toward the Undead Fortress, Benjamin said with a touch of excitement, "I just took a closer look. Those are all Low Level Undead. Many have no weapons or Armor. They’re just like those Skeletons in games that shatter with a single touch. Also, the flames in their eyes are about to go out. I think it’s the sun. They’ve become weaker during the day, just like Vampires."

This explanation left Percy deeply unsatisfied. He looked at Benjamin and said sternly, "You can’t always talk about games. I don’t like playing games, Benjamin. You need to understand, this is reality! Do you get it? Reality! The one you’re facing isn’t some unfeeling robot that’s just a program; he’s a flesh-and-blood, thinking Human! He’s not just going to stand there and let us beat him!"
