Chapter 164: Chapter 117: I Am the Protagonist 2
Remembering the sudden attack and the dozens of Treasure Hunting Catmen gunned down in the first volley, Liu Xingxing’s heart bled. It wasn’t easy for him to build up this small fortune! He had only summoned them a few days ago, not even having had time to form a bond, and they were shot down just like that. Was there no justice in the world? Was there no law?!
The setting sun disappeared below the horizon, and the last ray of light vanished from the sky. Night fell like a curtain, blanketing the entire Wasteland.
"City Lord!"
The Catman’s cry sent Liu Xingxing running. He looked ahead and saw specks of light, like fireflies, swaying in the distance. Undead. It was the Undead—a massive Undead Army!
Never before had Liu Xingxing found the Undead to be so lovely.
He thought of his own fortress. Pathetic, truly pathetic. Those guys chasing him had almost turned it into a sieve.
"Charge through!"
The darkness couldn’t hide them from the Skeleton Undead’s perception. They spotted the Treasure-Hunting Catman Mobile Fortress from afar and spontaneously parted, clearing a path. Trailing dust, the fortress charged unimpeded into the midst of the Undead army.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The Jackal Wolfmen’s Firearms were still crackling, but Benjamin sensed something was wrong. The "fireflies" in the darkness made him uneasy. Raising his spyglass, he took a look, and his heart nearly stopped. He slapped the wooden planks beside him, yelling in a panic, "Stop, stop, stop! Halt! Don’t go any further!"
The armored-car-like Mobile Fortress screeched to a halt with a loud RUMBLE. Standing lookout on the roof, Benjamin swayed back and forth like a tumbler doll. Percy hurried over and poked his head out beside him.
"What’s going on? Why did we stop? Did we catch them?" Percy asked, confused. He stuck his head out, but his eyes hadn’t adjusted to the darkness, and he couldn’t see what was ahead.
"Damn it, Percy, just look what’s up ahead!" Benjamin swore, handing his spyglass to the confused Percy.
Percy scrambled out, squeezing in next to Benjamin. He took the spyglass and raised it to his eye. "My God, what is that? Zombies? No... no, that’s Undead! It’s the Undead!"
The Undead stood in silence, the Soul Fire within their skulls burning fiercely. The nearby insects and Wild Beasts sensed the aura of death and fled, leaving an eerie quiet.
One Longbowman, standing among the Skeleton Undead, slowly raised its arm and lifted its Longbow. A thin, faint blue strand of Soul Fire appeared on the bow, connecting its tips to form a string.
It drew a Long Arrow from its Quiver, angled the bow 45 degrees toward the sky, and pulled it taut into a full draw. Then, it released.
SWOOSH—
The White Bone Long Arrow soared into the sky, tracing a parabolic arc toward the distant Jackal Wolfman Mobile Fortress.
THUNK!
The Long Arrow landed, punching through layers of tough hide and thick wooden planks to embed itself nearly a meter deep right beside Benjamin.
"Fuck..."
Benjamin froze. He slowly turned his head to stare at the Long Arrow, a cold chill seizing his heart. If that arrow had been just a little higher, it wouldn’t have just pierced the Armor—it would have been his body.
The White Bone Long Arrow acted as a signal flare. One by one, the Skeleton Undead lifted their heads. Their Soul Fire shone through their empty eye sockets like burning eyes, locking onto the Jackal Wolfman Mobile Fortress ahead.
ROAR—
They opened their mouths and unleashed a Soul Roar. Like zombies in a movie spotting their prey, tens of thousands of Undead surged forward like a tidal wave, crashing toward Benjamin’s Jackal Wolfman Mobile Fortress.
These Skeleton Undead had all been hastily summoned by Li Ziyu; they hadn’t even been issued Weapons. But their sheer numbers and fearless frenzy were enough to make Benjamin and Percy’s blood run cold.
"Turn! Turn around, quick!"
"Jackal Wolfmen, attack! Aim for their heads! Shoot for their heads!"
"Percy, have your Kobolds get the rolling boulders ready! We need them to help hold them back."
Benjamin shouted continuously, slapping the wooden planks beside him.
The fortress rumbled to life again, its massive frame carving a semicircular path in the dirt. The guns of the Jackal Wolfman Firearms Team roared once more, only this time their target was not the Treasure-Hunting Catman Mobile Fortress, but the sea of Undead.
There were simply too many Skeleton Undead. The Jackal Wolfmen didn’t even need to aim; they were guaranteed to hit something if they fired. As for whether they hit a skull, that was up to fate. Their Long-barreled Firearms were nowhere near that precise.
The crackle of firearms was incessant. Every so often, a Skeleton Undead would be struck, its bones shattering and sending fragments flying. But as long as the skull wasn’t hit, such minor injuries were completely inconsequential.
Unfortunately, the Undead were ultimately too slow. By the time they reached the fortress, it had already finished turning and was speeding away. At the same time, massive, round stone spheres were being pushed off the top.
The stone spheres accelerated down a slide-like ramp, bouncing and crashing into the Undead horde. They continued to roll onward, crushing all the Undead in their path.
It had to be said that the stone spheres were extremely effective against the slower Skeleton Undead. Any Undead crushed by them had no chance of being revived.
The armored-car-like Mobile Fortress fled, continuously dropping stone spheres to impede the pursuing Undead.
These stone spheres came from Percy’s Kobold Mobile Fortress. Just as Liu Xingxing and Zhang Peng had attached their own Mobile Fortresses to the Undead Fortress, the Kobold Mobile Fortress was linked to the Jackal Wolfman Mobile Fortress, and they advanced and retreated as one.
The Kobold Race, much like the Dwarves, enjoyed digging tunnels in mountains and prospecting for ore. However, they only enjoyed the mining part; when it came to forging, the gap between them and the Dwarves was as wide as heaven and earth. Their combat prowess depended entirely on brave, reckless charges.
