Chapter 84: Chapter 84: The Pack Fight

Three days had passed since the command variant encounter.

Three days of learning NF-089 the way the team had learned every previous fragment. Through direct engagement. Through repeated contact with the environment’s creatures and vegetation and the particular logic that governed how everything in a high magical density nature world related to everything else.

Day two had been the most demanding for Forge specifically.

The fire calibration she had completed during the first engagement had produced a working baseline. Yet NF-089’s magical density varied across the fragment. Higher near the resource concentrations. Lower near the portal entry zone. Moving deeper into the fragment meant moving into progressively higher density conditions that continuously pushed against her control margin.

She had encountered her actual limit on day two’s second engagement.

A standard variant pack of five had come through the eastern vegetation wall during an extraction attempt. The engagement had required sustained fire pressure rather than the controlled burst applications of day one. Twenty minutes of continuous combat fire use in conditions where the enhanced combustion was fighting her control continuously.

She had managed it.

Yet by the engagement’s end the blue-white color of her fire had shifted slightly. A white intensity at the core that hadn’t been present before. The magical density feeding the combustion beyond what her calibration had accounted for.

She had closed her hands immediately.

Looked at the vegetation around her.

Nothing unintended had burned.

Yet the margin had narrowed considerably.

That evening on the established rest platform Kai had found her sitting at the edge running small controlled fire outputs from one hand. Testing. Recalibrating. Finding the new control threshold for the higher density conditions.

He had sat beside her and watched without comment.

She had worked for forty minutes.

Then looked at him.

"The limit moved," she said.

"I saw."

"It’ll keep moving as we push deeper."

"Yes."

She looked at the small blue-white flame above her palm. Steady now. Precisely controlled.

"I’ll keep calibrating," she said.

Not a request for advice. Simply a statement of what was going to happen.

Kai had left her to it.

Day three had produced something genuinely surprising.

The command variant had reappeared.

Not aggressively. Not with pack support. Alone. Moving at the edge of the team’s established perimeter in a specific behavioral pattern that Echo had been the first to identify.

"It’s not approaching," Echo had said. "It’s circling. Consistent distance maintained."

Observation behavior.

The same quality as the Sky Sovereign’s gradually closing approach in SF-447. Not hunting. Assessing. Updating its understanding of the team’s capabilities and behavior patterns.

Nova had confirmed. "Still curious."

The command variant had maintained its observation circle throughout most of day three. The team had continued extraction work and perimeter engagement with standard variants while it watched from consistent distance.

By evening it had positioned itself forty meters from the team’s rest platform and stopped moving.

Lune had reported that the node below the root cluster was showing increased output during the periods the command variant was closest to the platform.

The creature was aware of the node. Had been its entire life. Was observing a team that had demonstrated knowledge of what was below the cluster and the capability to reach it.

Curious was the accurate assessment.

Day four began with Echo’s morning detection sweep.

"The signature count changed overnight," she said. "The three-pack and five-pack variants that we’ve encountered separately. Their signatures are at the same location this morning." She tracked carefully. "Plus the command variant. Plus additional individuals I didn’t detect yesterday."

"Total count?"

Echo listened.

"Eleven confirmed. Possibly more at the edge of my current range."

Eleven.

The pack consolidation the elder had described as the escalation ceiling for territorial responses to sustained intrusion.

The command variant had spent three days observing. Had reached its assessment. Had called the full pack response.

Sylvia received the information with the expression of someone who had been waiting for exactly this development and had been ready since day one.

"Full binding counter-protocol," she said immediately. "Forge keeps two fire zones ready simultaneously. Nova and Echo on continuous warning. Lune and Sera counter-binding primary. Kai mid-range Evolution Pressure for critical disruption moments."

She looked at the team.

"Everything we’ve learned in three days gets used today."

The pack arrived an hour after sunrise.

They didn’t emerge from one direction. The command variant had learned from every previous engagement. The pack entered the team’s perimeter from four directions simultaneously. North. South. East. West. Perfectly coordinated. The contact signaling relay running between every member continuously.

"Eleven confirmed signatures entering perimeter," Echo said. "Four vectors."

Sylvia had already positioned the formation to respond to multi-vector approach. The drills for exactly this scenario had run repeatedly during preparation weeks at the settlement.

The first binding attempts came from the north and south simultaneously.

Two standard variants from each direction. Four simultaneous binding sequences targeting the team’s outer members.

Lune called the structural weak points for all four in rapid sequence.

Her spatial awareness reading four separate binding geometries simultaneously.

Sera’s counter-current strikes moved between weak points with the efficiency of three weeks of drilling the protocol until it was automatic. First north binding broken. Second. South first. Second.

Four binding sequences neutralized before any of them completed.

Forge released the first fire zone toward the eastern approach.

Blue-white fire at her recalibrated NF-089 control level. The zone cleared the eastern vegetation in a controlled burst that stopped precisely at the boundary she intended.

Three eastern variants stopped at the fire’s edge.

Calculated aversion. Not reflexive. They held at the boundary and assessed.

Forge held the second fire zone ready.

Sylvia moved into the open ground the first zone had created and engaged the northern variants that had broken through to close range following the failed binding attempts.

Her spirit energy dense around her weapon arm. The junction-targeting strike approach she had developed from the elder’s briefing applied to close range combat. First variant’s primary junction struck. Vine integration flickered. She drove through the disrupted moment and hit the secondary junction.

The variant broke from the engagement.

Yet the western approach variants had reached the team’s interior during the northern engagement.

Two of them.

Moving fast. Using the command variant’s coordination to time their western entry with the moment Sylvia’s attention was north.

Nova had called it two seconds before it happened.

"Western interior. Two. Now."

Kai had positioned himself for exactly this.

He released Evolution Pressure simultaneously at both western variants. The Intermediate rank application covering multiple targets. Both variants’ vine integration experiencing forced adaptation stress simultaneously.

Neither broke completely. Yet both slowed enough that Sylvia could redirect from the northern engagement and Forge could track them clearly.

Forge released a targeted burst at the closer western variant.

Blue-white fire. Precise. The variant took the strike across its vine integration mass and retreated immediately.

The second western variant was still moving through the Evolution Pressure disruption.

Sera hit it with a concentrated wind current strike. Not counter-binding. Direct combat application. The forced current catching the variant’s vine mass and compressing it against its own body.

The creature’s movement stopped.

Froze.

Used the moment to reorient.

Received a junction-targeting strike from Sylvia who had crossed the interior in four steps.

It withdrew.

Six variants disengaged or withdrawn in the first three minutes of the engagement.

Five remaining. Including the command variant which had not yet directly engaged.

Echo called its position. "Command variant moving northeast. Eighty meters and approaching."

Then: "Four remaining standard variants converging on its position."

The command variant consolidating the remaining pack. Withdrawing the engagement to regroup around itself.

Sylvia assessed immediately. "It’s pulling them back for a second wave approach. Different formation."

"Time?" Kai asked.

Echo tracked the movement. "Three minutes before they reach consolidated position."

Three minutes.

Kai looked at the team.

Two minor injuries. Sera had taken a vine strike across her shoulder during the western interior breakthrough. Functional but uncomfortable. Lune had over-extended her spatial awareness reading four simultaneous binding geometries and needed a recovery moment.

Neither was critical.

Yet the second wave was coming from a command variant that had watched the entire first engagement.

It had seen which approaches worked and which hadn’t.

"We don’t let it consolidate," Kai said.

Sylvia looked at him.

"We go to them," he said. "Before the three minutes are up. While they’re still in movement rather than reformed."

The warrior’s expression assessed this for approximately one second.

"Aggressive pursuit. Catch the pack in transition rather than in formation." She looked at the team. "Forge leads the approach. Fire corridor through the northeast vegetation. We follow through the corridor while it’s clear. Hit them before they finish regrouping."

Forge raised both hands.

The blue-white fire built between her palms. Larger than any single application she had produced in NF-089 yet.

She looked at Kai once.

He nodded.

She released it northeast.

A sustained fire corridor burned through the dense vegetation. Four meters wide. Twenty meters long. Burning fast and clean and stopping precisely at the intended boundary.

The team moved through it immediately behind the burning front.

Fast. Precise. Using the corridor Forge had created before the vegetation could begin recovering.

They emerged from the corridor’s far end directly into the space between the withdrawing variants and the command variant’s consolidation point.

The pack was in transition.

Exactly as Kai had assessed.

Not reformed. Not in their second wave approach formation.

Simply moving.

And the team arrived among them while they were moving.

What followed was forty seconds of the most intense close-range combat the team had produced in any subspace.

Every team member’s ability running at full capacity simultaneously.

Forge creating localized fire bursts to separate variants from each other. Preventing pack cohesion. Keeping the command variant from consolidating its coordination.

Sylvia moving through the separated individuals with the ruthless efficiency of someone who had trained junction-targeting strikes for three weeks specifically for this moment.

Nova calling movements before they happened. Echo calling positions beyond visual range. Lune providing spatial data on every variant’s location simultaneously.

Sera’s wind current strikes driving variants away from each other every time they attempted to close formation.

Kai using Evolution Pressure at the command variant specifically. Sustained application rather than burst. The command variant’s vine integration under continuous adaptation stress preventing it from maintaining the contact signal relay to the remaining pack members.

A pack that couldn’t communicate was eleven individuals.

Eleven individuals without coordination fought differently from eleven individuals with it.

The fight lasted forty seconds from corridor emergence to the last variant withdrawing.

No casualties. No serious injuries.

The pack had broken.

The command variant withdrew last. Moving northeast through the vegetation at a pace that communicated urgency without panic.

Its vine components pulled tight against its body.

Its root network connection reduced to a minimal passive output.

It looked back once before disappearing into the plant mass.

Echo listened to the direction it had gone for a long moment.

"It’s not stopping," she said. "Not regrouping. Moving continuously away from our position." She tilted her head. "All eleven signatures moving away. Different directions. The pack coordination is completely broken."

Sylvia stood in the center of the corridor Forge had burned.

Looked at the team.

"That’s how you fight in a nature fragment," she said.

Nobody argued.
