Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Lune and the Network

The left root cluster rose from the ground in a dense formation of interlocked root systems that had been growing together for long enough that individual roots were no longer distinguishable.

One mass. One structure. Ancient enough to have developed its own internal organization independent of any tree above it.

Kai pressed his hand against the nearest surface.

The warmth was immediate.

Not the cold root texture of standard vegetation. Something deeper. The ambient magical density of NF-089 had saturated this root cluster over an unknown period until the material itself had changed character.

Lune was already crouched at the cluster’s base.

Her hands pressed flat against the ground beside the root system. Her amber-gold eyes tracking something Kai couldn’t see.

"The Life Crystal resonance is coming from the third tier down," she said. "The root system has grown in layers. The first tier is surface growth. The second is older. The third is where the crystal formation has been occurring."

"How deep?"

"Approximately two meters below the current surface. Yet the root structure provides access paths. The crystal growth has followed the root architecture rather than forming in solid stone like SF-291’s formations."

Easier extraction than lightning crystals. Yet requiring navigation through the root architecture rather than simple surface collection.

Kai looked at the command variant across the clearing.

The creature had moved slightly since they crossed to the cluster. Not toward them. Laterally. Working itself toward the clearing’s edge with the slow careful movements of something in significant discomfort that was nonetheless prioritizing repositioning over recovery.

It was trying to reach the right root cluster.

The one whose connection it still controlled.

Sylvia had noticed.

She positioned herself between the command variant and the right cluster without making the barrier explicit. Simply standing where she stood. The creature would need to pass through her to reach its destination.

It stopped.

Assessed Sylvia.

Made a different calculation.

Stopped moving.

Kai turned back to the cluster.

"Show me the access paths," he said to Lune.

The child stood and moved slowly around the cluster’s perimeter. Her spatial awareness reading the root architecture from outside. Periodically she pressed a hand against the surface and held it there for a moment before moving on.

"Here," she said at the cluster’s southern face.

A section of root mass that was visually identical to every other section. Yet Lune’s perception had read something in the structural pattern that distinguished it.

Kai pressed his own hand against the indicated section.

Through the Intermediate rank’s enhanced environmental analysis he felt it. A slight variance in the root density. A channel running inward and downward through the mass.

A natural gap in the interlocking root structure.

Wide enough for a hand and forearm. Possibly an arm to the shoulder if the angles aligned.

"The crystal formation is directly below this channel," Lune said. "The roots have been growing around the crystals rather than through them. The crystals formed first. The root system developed around them over time."

Life Crystals old enough that the root system had grown around them.

Kai reached into the channel.

The warmth increased as his hand descended. Not uncomfortably. The specific warmth of concentrated life-aspected energy radiating from a source that had been accumulating for a very long time.

His fingertips touched something smooth.

Dense. Heavier than it appeared from the size he could feel.

He worked his hand around it carefully.

The authority responded.

**Life Crystal - NF-089 Formation**

**Grade: 2 (Standard)**

**Special Property: Root Integration - Passive**

**Note: Crystal has been in contact with the root system for an extended period. Root energy and Life Crystal energy have partially merged. Extraction will produce a hybrid energy profile not found in standard Life Crystal specimens.**

**Estimated Value: Above standard Grade 2 Life Crystal pricing**

**Root Network Resonance: Active**

Root Network Resonance active.

The crystals weren’t simply embedded in the root system. They had been absorbing the root system’s energy alongside their standard Life Crystal formation energy. A dual-source accumulation.

He extracted it carefully.

The crystal came free with less resistance than he expected. The root channel had provided the perfect natural extraction path.

He held it up in the clearing’s diffuse light.

Green-gold. The standard Life Crystal green underlying a gold that he hadn’t seen in Life Crystal documentation. The root energy component visually distinct from the Life Crystal base.

Lune looked at it.

Her expression changed.

"It resonates with the network," she said quietly.

Not the realm’s Root Network. The local root structure of NF-089.

Kai felt it through the crystal’s surface against his palm. A faint rhythmic quality. The same character as the Root Node signals he had encountered in SF-447 and suspected existed somewhere deeper in NF-089.

"There’s more in there?" he asked Lune.

She pressed her awareness back into the cluster’s structure.

"Seven additional formation points. Similar depth. Similar size." She traced the access channels she was perceiving. "Three more extraction channels accessible from the southern face. Two from the eastern face. The remaining two require deeper access than hand depth."

"Leave the two deep ones," Kai said. "Take the accessible five."

He reached back into the first channel. Worked through it methodically. The extraction process was different from both lightning crystals and wind crystals. No separation technique required. No calibrated current or careful boundary identification. Simply careful navigation through the root channel and firm gentle extraction.

The root system didn’t resist.

It released.

As though the crystals had been held in place by the root architecture but were ready to be taken.

Kai extracted three from the southern face. Lune guided his hand position for each. The spatial awareness reading the root channel geometry from outside and translating it into directional instructions.

Turn left at the secondary root junction. Angle downward fifteen degrees. The crystal is against the channel’s right wall.

It was the most efficient extraction process of any expedition yet.

Yet Kai was only partially focused on the extraction.

The other part of his attention was on the Root Node signal Lune had described in the briefing. The signal that was different from SF-447’s node. Less isolated. More aware. Receiving something from an active living network.

"The node," he said between extractions.

Lune looked at him.

"Is it nearby?"

She pressed both hands against the root cluster’s surface and extended her awareness further than she had been using for extraction guidance.

Several seconds passed.

Her expression shifted.

Something in it became more focused. More attentive. The quality of someone receiving information that required careful processing before it could be communicated accurately.

"It’s below us," she said.

Kai stopped.

"Below the root cluster?"

"Below and deeper. The root cluster extends further down than the Life Crystal formation tier. Significantly further." She kept both hands against the surface. "The node is at the base of the root structure. Where the oldest roots reach their deepest point."

The oldest roots at their deepest point.

The Life Crystals had formed around the upper root system.

The Root Node was at the base.

The root system had been growing around both of them simultaneously for an unknown period.

"Can you read its current signal character from here?"

Lune was quiet for a moment.

Her hands pressed harder against the root surface.

Then: "It’s different from SF-447’s node."

"How."

"The SF-447 node felt like someone standing in an empty room waiting." She searched for the right description. "This one feels like someone standing in an empty room but they can hear something through the wall."

Hearing something through the wall.

The active living Root Network signal the node was receiving.

"Is the signal coming through clearly?"

"Not clearly. Yet consistently." She looked at Kai. "Whatever is sending it has been sending it for a long time. The node has been receiving for a long time. The pattern has worn itself into the connection." She paused. "Like a path that exists because feet have walked it repeatedly."

A signal pattern worn into the connection through repetition.

Kai thought about the authority analysis from the briefing preparation.

**Cross-Fragment Signal: Detected**

**Signal Character: Territorial. Not aggressive. Simply marking presence.**

The Vine Stalkers in VH-112 had acknowledged this signal. Cross-boundary territorial marking between fragment ecosystems. Something marking its presence across dimensional boundaries into the fragment nodes.

Something that had been doing this long enough that the marking pattern had worn itself into the nodes.

"The command variant," Kai said.

Lune looked at him.

"Its minor root network connection. The authority flagged it." He looked across the clearing at the creature. "These variants have a minor root network connection. They’ve been living above this node for their entire existence."

Lune followed his thinking.

"They know the signal," she said.

"They’ve been living with it since they were born. The territorial marking from the unknown network is part of their environmental baseline." He looked at the root cluster. "The cross-boundary territorial marking isn’t just reaching the fragment nodes. It’s reaching the creatures living above them."

The Vine Stalker variants’ cross-boundary acknowledgment signals to VH-112’s Vine Stalkers.

A territorial marking from an unknown living network reaching fragment nodes.

Variants living above those nodes spending their entire lives absorbing the signal as ambient environmental information.

The elder’s Vine Stalkers in VH-112 had simply acknowledged the cross-boundary signal. Because it was familiar. Because they had grown up with it.

Because whatever was sending it was old enough and consistent enough that every creature living above its node had simply absorbed it as part of what the world was.

Kai pressed his own hand against the root cluster.

Through the crystal he had extracted. Through the Intermediate rank’s enhanced environmental analysis. Through the Root Network connection that ran from this cluster toward the node below.

Faint.

Yet present.

A rhythmic signal character that was biological and intentional and had been running long enough to wear itself into the node’s receiving pattern.

He pulled his hand back.

"We finish the accessible extractions," he said. "Then we find a way to reach the node."

Lune looked at the root cluster.

"The access channels for the two deep-set crystals also lead toward the node." She paused. "They’re not separate paths. The crystals are on the way."

Kai looked at her.

"The two we left."

"Yes."

He looked at the root cluster.

Seven crystals total. Five extracted. Two remaining at depth.

Below those two, a Root Node that had been receiving a signal from a living network for long enough that the pattern was worn into the connection.

"We take the remaining two," he said. "Carefully."

Lune nodded.

Reached into the eastern face channel she had identified earlier.

Her spatial awareness guiding rather than Kai’s hands this time. The deeper access requiring more precise navigation than he could manage without her perception.

She extracted the sixth crystal.

Then the seventh.

Both the same green-gold hybrid as the others. Root energy and Life Crystal energy in combination.

Seven total.

The root channel after the seventh extraction was clear.

Open.

Running downward into the root cluster’s deeper structure toward the node below.

Kai looked at it.

Then at the command variant across the clearing.

The creature had stopped trying to reach the right root cluster. It was watching the team with the particular attention of something that had been processing the entire engagement and had reached several conclusions.

Whatever those conclusions were they didn’t include another attack attempt.

Nova came to stand beside Kai.

"It’s not afraid anymore," she said.

Kai looked at her.

"What is it?"

Nova was quiet for a moment.

"Curious," she said.

The same word she had used for the fairy scout in VH-112.

Curious rather than threatening.

Kai looked at the cleared root channel leading downward toward the node.

Then at the command variant watching them from across the clearing with what Nova perceived as curiosity.

Both things were connected.

The creature knew what was below the root cluster. It had been living above it its entire existence. It had absorbed the signal from the living network as part of its environmental baseline.

And now something had come to this specific location and cleared the path to the node below.

Something that had already demonstrated it could sever root connections and disrupt vine integration and resist binding sequences and coordinate in ways the pack hadn’t encountered before.

The command variant was curious about what happened next.

So was Kai.

"Sylvia," he said.

The warrior looked toward him from her position.

"Defensive perimeter. Close formation around the cluster entrance." He looked at the cleared channel. "We’re going deeper."
