Chapter 85: Chapter 85: What NF-089 Holds

The morning after the pack fight the fragment was quiet.

Not the quiet of absence. The quiet of reassessment. The plant mass around them continued its constant ambient movement. The ambient magical density continued flowing through the vegetation in patterns Echo could hear and Lune could feel. Birds or bird-equivalent creatures called from the upper canopy layer somewhere above the dense mid-level growth.

Yet the Vine Stalker variant signatures were absent from Echo’s range entirely.

"Still moving away?" Kai asked during the morning detection sweep.

"The command variant crossed my range boundary sometime before dawn," Echo said. "Standard variants cleared range during the night. I have zero confirmed signatures within two hundred meters."

The pack had genuinely withdrawn from the team’s established territory.

Not regrouping. Not establishing a new approach position. Simply gone.

Sylvia considered this with the professional attention she gave to tactical information.

"The command variant’s assessment after forty seconds of coordinated combat against that level of response was that the cost of continued territorial pressure exceeded the value of maintaining territorial control here." She looked at the root cluster area. "We’ve effectively claimed this zone through demonstrated capability."

"How long does that hold?" Kai asked.

"Territorial displacement in nature environments typically holds until the displacing party leaves or weakens significantly." She paused. "Yet the pack coordination is broken. The eleven individuals will need time to re-establish contact relay communication. Likely days at minimum."

Days of working time in the resource zone without pack interference.

The extraction work began properly that morning.

The seven Life Crystals extracted during the command variant encounter had been the accessible surface tier. The root cluster held considerably more formation points deeper in its structure. Lune had been mapping the full architecture since day one when she wasn’t occupied with counter-binding work or spatial navigation.

She presented her complete map at the morning briefing.

Not drawn. Described. Her spatial awareness producing a verbal architecture of the root system that was detailed enough that Kai could hold the structure in his mind while working.

Twenty-three additional formation points across four depth tiers.

The first tier was accessible through the extraction channels identified earlier. Standard hand-depth reach. The second tier required arm-length access with Lune’s positional guidance. The third tier was at the boundary of direct manual extraction. The fourth tier was where the Root Node sat.

"Can we reach the third tier crystals?" Kai asked.

Lune thought carefully. "With the right approach. The root channels from the second tier continue downward. The geometry is tighter. Yet workable."

"How many formation points in tier three?"

"Six."

Six additional specimens at the deeper tier. Combined with the twenty-three accessible across tiers one and two, the root cluster’s full extraction potential was significant.

Kai looked at the seven specimens already in the preservation containers.

The green-gold hybrid coloring. Root energy and Life Crystal energy in combination. A resource type with no direct market precedent in anything the settlement had previously sold.

Marek’s assessment would determine the value. Yet the hybrid energy profile suggested something above standard Grade 2 Life Crystal pricing.

How much above depended on specialist demand.

"We work top to bottom," Kai said. "Tier one today. Tier two tomorrow. Tier three and Node on day three."

Lune nodded.

The tier one extraction consumed most of the morning.

Kai worked the extraction channels with Lune guiding his hand positions from outside the root structure. The technique had been established during the command variant day. Now it ran with the efficiency of practiced repetition.

Sera maintained a continuous atmospheric read around the extraction zone. Her wind affinity providing ambient awareness of movement approaching through the vegetation before Echo’s hearing would catch it.

Nothing came.

The pack was genuinely absent.

The extraction work proceeded with the particular focused productivity of a team that had cleared its threat environment and could concentrate entirely on the task.

Nine specimens from tier one.

Added to the seven from the command variant day. Sixteen total.

The hybrid coloring was consistent across all of them. The root integration component varying slightly between specimens depending on how deeply embedded they had been in the root structure. More deeply embedded crystals showed more gold in the green-gold mix. Surface-adjacent crystals were more purely green with only traces of gold.

Mira would find the variation interesting when the specimens returned to the settlement.

The afternoon brought something Kai had been anticipating since the morning detection sweep confirmed the pack’s departure.

Forge approached him during the midday rest period.

She sat beside him on the root cluster’s exposed surface. The same way she sat at everything. Without asking whether the space was available. Simply sitting because sitting there was what made sense.

She was quiet for a moment.

This was unusual for Forge. Silence with purpose rather than silence as absence of things to say.

"The fire corridor yesterday," she said finally.

"Yes."

"I’ve been thinking about why it worked as well as it did."

Kai waited.

"The magical density here is higher than anything I trained for. That’s been a control challenge all expedition." She looked at her hands. "Yet yesterday when I released the corridor I wasn’t fighting the density. I used it."

"Explain the difference."

"Every previous fire application I’ve been managing the enhancement. Holding it at my intended output level against the ambient energy trying to push it higher." She paused. "Yesterday I set the intended output and then let the ambient energy reach its own level within the direction I set. I controlled the direction and the boundary. I stopped trying to control the intensity."

Kai looked at her.

"The corridor burned hotter than anything you’ve produced this expedition."

"Yes. Because I stopped fighting the enhancement and started using it." She looked at the northeast vegetation where the corridor had burned. "The control question isn’t about the intensity level. It’s about the boundary precision. Hot enough to burn what I aim at and stop exactly where I intend is better than exactly the intensity I planned but imprecise at the edges."

The realization of someone who had spent three days fighting her own ability’s enhancement and had found the correct relationship with it on day four under combat pressure.

Not despite the pressure. Because of it.

"That’s a significant development," Kai said.

"Yes." Forge said it without particular pride. Simply accurate assessment. "It changes what I can do in this environment. And in environments like it."

She stood.

Walked back toward the extraction zone.

Kai watched her go.

Sol had said Forge’s development wasn’t following standard patterns. Something underneath the surface moving in a direction that even Intermediate rank couldn’t fully read yet.

Whatever it was, it had expressed itself in a forty-second combat corridor that had broken a coordinated eleven-variant pack.

And in a quiet ten-minute conversation afterward where she explained exactly what she had understood from the experience.

The afternoon extraction produced twelve specimens from tier two.

The deeper access required arm-length reach into the root channels with precise positional guidance from Lune. Slower than tier one. Yet the specimens were consistently more gold than green at this depth. The root integration component more significant.

Kai examined the deepest specimen against the others.

The gold was almost dominant over the green at tier two’s lower boundary.

He ran the authority analysis on the deepest tier two specimen specifically.

**Life Crystal - NF-089 Tier Two Formation**

**Grade: 2 (Standard)**

**Root Integration Component: High**

**Hybrid Energy Profile: Significant**

**Note: Root integration at this level produces energy storage properties distinct from standard Life Crystal function. Crystal functions as both Life energy reservoir and Root Network minor amplifier simultaneously.**

**Estimated Value: 85-110 Divine Coins per specimen**

85 to 110 Divine Coins per specimen.

Standard Grade 2 Life Crystals from documented nature fragment sources traded at 35 to 55 Divine Coins in Aurelis Divine City’s specialist market.

The root integration component was producing a fifty to one hundred percent premium above standard pricing.

Twenty-eight specimens total across tiers one and two.

Kai did the mental calculation.

Conservative estimate at 85 per specimen. Twenty-eight specimens.

2,380 Divine Coins before Marek’s fee.

Yet the tier two specimens were valued higher than tier one. The weighted average across all twenty-eight was likely closer to 95 per specimen.

2,660 Divine Coins gross. 2,341 after Marek’s twelve percent.

Significant. Not the transformational figures of the Grade 1 provisional Storm Crystals. Yet substantial for what had amounted to three days of extraction work alongside the expedition’s combat development.

And tomorrow was tier three.

Six specimens at greater depth. More gold than green based on the progression pattern. Potentially approaching a different pricing tier entirely.

That evening the team gathered at the rest platform.

The command variant was still absent from Echo’s range.

Lune was doing what she did every evening. Sitting with her hands against the ground. Feeling the Root Network signal through the node below the cluster. The connection that had worn itself into the node’s receiving pattern through long repetition.

Kai sat beside her.

"Tomorrow we reach the node," he said.

Lune pressed her hands more firmly against the root surface.

"It knows," she said.

"The node?"

"The signal from the living network. Its character changed yesterday. During the corridor fight." She looked at Kai. "The intensity of the signal increased for approximately forty seconds."

The forty seconds of the corridor fight.

When Forge’s fire had burned at its highest intensity in NF-089. When Evolution Pressure had run at sustained Intermediate rank application. When the full team’s combined ability output had been at maximum.

The signal had strengthened during that window.

"The living network detected our combat output?" Kai said.

"Detected or responded to," Lune said. "I don’t know which yet." She looked at the root cluster. "Tomorrow when we connect to the node directly I’ll know more."

Kai looked at the root cluster.

Tomorrow the tier three crystals.

Then the node at the base of the structure.

And the signal that had strengthened during their most intense combat output that had been running long enough to wear itself into the node’s receiving pattern.

Something out there in the dimensional space beyond the fragments the team had explored had been watching NF-089’s node.

Had noticed something different about the signal during forty seconds of unusually high energy output above the node.

Had responded to it.

The Nine-Tailed Divine Empire was still a Town rank settlement with fifty-one citizens and twelve Spirit Fairies in a southern territory above a Root Heart convergence point.

Yet it was apparently interesting to something ancient and root-integrated that had been marking its presence across dimensional boundaries for long enough that the marking pattern had become part of the nodes’ baseline signal environment.

Kai looked at Lune.

"Tomorrow," he said.

She nodded.

Her hands against the root surface.

Feeling the signal that was different tonight from how it had been this morning.

More present somehow.

As though something had moved closer to the dimensional boundary between its space and theirs.
