Chapter 268: James, You Bastard! Put Me Down!
"Have a guilty conscience?"
James raised his eyebrows.
His expression was very cold, and his eyes scrutinized her.
He was so close she could even feel his breathing.
Yvonne’s expression felt uneasy. She quickly took a step back to increase the distance between them.
"How am I guilty?"
He noticed that she intentionally distanced herself from him. His eyes swept over her face and fell on his wristwatch. "Let’s go. It’s almost time."
He reached out to grab her hand, but she dodged him.
"What do you mean it’s about time?"
Hearing her words, he frowned. "My mother invited you home for dinner tonight."
Only then did she remember. "I didn’t agree."
He reasoned. "You didn’t reject."
"That... that’s because both of you left before I could even speak."
She stammered.
He narrowed his eyes and hooked his lips. "I don’t care if it’s too late or if you have acquiesced. In short, you have to keep your promise."
His tone was unprecedentedly domineering. He reached out his hand, grabbed her arm, and walked out of the door.
She couldn’t react. She felt that James had changed into someone totally different.
He dragged her out of the door and only then did she come to her senses. She struggled and rubbed her sore wrist uncomfortably, saying, "James Taylor, don’t be so unreasonable. I can’t go to your mom’s place for dinner with you. I already have a date."
"A date?" James’ face darkened. "That gigolo?"
He had overheard their conversation.
She was surprised. "What gigolo? You are so rude!"
"Rude?"
James sneered. "Then what is he?"
"James Taylor!" She was seething with anger. "I don’t want to argue with you.
Anyway, I won’t go with you."
After that, she turned around and was about to walk back into the hospital.
He reached out and grabbed her. "Are you really not coming with me?"
She shook him off.
"That’s right."
She answered without the slightest hesitation.
He gritted his teeth and suppressed the anger in him then took a few steps forward, carried her on his shoulder and left.
Yvonne was shocked. She screamed angrily, "James Taylor, you bastard, put me down!"
He ignored her, walked to the front of the car, opened the passenger door and threw her in.
"Behave yourself."
He fastened her seatbelt and walked to the driver’s seat.
Yvonne unbuckled her seatbelt and wanted to get out of the car, but she found that the door could not be opened.
James snorted and said, "Don’t waste your energy. I’ve locked the car door."
"James Taylor, you are violating my personal freedom."
She said angrily.
He ignored her, started the engine, and drove off.
Seeing that the car was gradually leaving the hospital, she closed her eyes and gave up struggling.
She tried to control her temper and said to James, "James, didn’t we agree to be just friends? How can you treat your friend like this?"
Her tone was somewhat helpless.
He scoffed. "Why? Are you telling me that you’re friends now? Why didn’t you tell me we were friends when you didn’t answer my calls a few days ago?"
...
Yvonne felt a little guilty for no reason, but she still denied it. "I didn’t mean to not answer your calls."
"Is that so?"
James frowned. "Then tell me, why didn’t you answer my calls?"
She turned to look out of the window awkwardly. "I didn’t hear my phone ring."
"You didn’t hear it ring on ten different occasions?"
He retorted.
She couldn’t answer that question, so she made it clear.
"Why must I answer your call? James Taylor, didn’t I make it clear to you? Don’t waste time on me."
"I don’t think it’s a waste of time," he said calmly as he turned the steering wheel.
"But I think..."
She said angrily.
He sneered and said.
"I’ll just pay for all your time."
As he casually spoke, it seemed he became the old shameless James again. She had a bad feeling instantly.
"James Taylor, I warn you not to be reckless."
He scoffed. "That’s none of your business."
He turned the steering wheel and said, "Since you don’t want to go to my mom’s for dinner, you can choose any restaurant. How about French?"
He made a U-turn.
She was so disturbed by him, she had no appetite, and said angrily, "I don’t want to eat. Let me get out of the car."
James sneered and ignored her.
Get off?
Once in his car, there was no possibility of getting out halfway.
She saw that he had no intention of stopping the car and was about to say something when her phone rang.
She answered the phone.
"Yvonne, where are you?"
Stanley’s voice came from the other end of the phone.
Given the current situation, it was probably impossible for her to have dinner with Stanley. She said apologetically, "I’m sorry. I have something urgent to attend to and can’t buy you dinner tonight."
Stanley replied, "That’s ok. Let’s do dinner another day."
She hung up the phone, feeling bad. She felt very sad that she had failed to keep her promise to buy him dinner and stood him up on their first date.
"What’s wrong? Was it that gigolo?"
James questioned.
Yvonne could not be bothered with him. She did not say a word and turned her gaze out of the window.
He didn’t care.
Not long after, the car stopped in front of a high-end French restaurant.
"Let’s have dinner here tonight."
As he spoke, he reached out to unbuckle his seatbelt.
When she saw this, she quickly unbuckled her seatbelt. While he was not paying attention, she opened the door, got out of the car, and fled.
By the time he discovered, she had hailed a cab by the roadside and left.
He sat there and looked at the cab in the rearview mirror. He couldn’t help sneering.
Even if she escaped today, there will still be tomorrow. He believed that he could win her.
Thinking of this, he took his time to call his assistant.
"Go, do something for me right away."
Yvonne had gotten into the cab in a hurry. She stared at the rearview mirror and was relieved when she saw that James did not follow her.
She glanced at the time and found that it was already past seven o’clock. If she called Stanley now for dinner, she wasn’t sure if it was too late.
Just as she was thinking about it, her phone rang. The abrupt ringing startled her and she almost dropped the phone. After she calmed down, she answered the call.
...
"Yvonne, I heard that you are working at First Medical Group. Why didn’t you tell me? Have you seen Stanley?"
Dorothy Smith’s excited voice came from the other end of the line.
Yvonne’s thoughts were instantly thrown into disarray. She sighed and replied, "Dorothy, today was my first day. Sorry, I was busy familiarizing things today. I forgot to tell you."
"That’s Ok. Yvonne, tell me, did you see Stanley?"
Dorothy didn’t give up.
She didn’t want to answer the question. When she was in medical school, when Dorothy knew that she and Stanley had the same professor, she kept pestering Yvonne to matchmake the both of them. However, Yvonne didn’t know Stanley that well then.
Moreover, she was now secretly in love with Stanley.
Dorothy didn’t give up throughout the years. Every now and then, she would ask around about Stanley.
Yvonne knew that if she told Dorothy the truth, she would definitely pester her to matchmake them.
What excuse can she come up then?
Although she had a good relationship with Dorothy ...
But, everyone was selfish.
Yvonne hesitated before replying.
"Dorothy, the hospital is huge and Stanley is a specialist. It won’t be easy to see him."
Dorothy was a little disappointed. "I see. Then... Yvonne, if you see Stanley, you must let me know as soon as possible. I’ll come over if I can."
Hearing Dorothy’s words, she felt a little guilty.
She didn’t know if she had done the right thing.
However, she knew that Stanley was the first person she ever liked, and she didn’t want anyone else to have him.
Then, what about Dorothy?
She arrived home, conflicted.
She stood in the shower for a long time, allowing the water to flow down from above her head.
It was the first time ever that she lied to a friend. She felt sad again. She closed her eyes. "I’m sorry, Dorothy. I hope you understand." James returned to the old house of the Taylors.
Seeing that he was alone, Mrs. Taylor frowned. "Where’s the person I told you to pick up?"
James took off his coat and threw it on the sofa, saying, "She didn’t come."
"What?" Mrs. Taylor stepped forward in surprise. "What do you mean, she didn’t come?"
James was a little frustrated. "I didn’t manage to pick her up. She didn’t come. That’s all. Okay, Mom, this is going too fast. We don’t even have anything serious going on."
"How is it too fast?"
When Mrs. Taylor heard this, she became anxious. "People who usually go on matchmaking blind dates usually meet both their parents in three months and get engaged in half a year. It’s all part of the flow."
"Didn’t you say it would take three months? It hasn’t been three months yet."
James frowned.
Mrs. Taylor was displeased.
"Why are you arguing with me about this? How old are you? Can’t you accelerate it?"
Dissatisfaction was written all over Mrs. Taylor’s face.
James felt helpless. He really did not understand why his mother was in such a hurry.
It was not like he couldn’t find a woman to get married.
"Mom, I don’t want to criticize you, but our family is not anxious for me to give birth to a child to inherit our family business, so why are you in such a hurry?"
Mrs. Taylor got upset. "What are you saying? Even if you don’t want to inherit the family business, you should get married and have children as soon as possible. Don’t wait for that person to get ahead of you. Otherwise, the position of the eldest grandson of the Taylors will be snatched away."
