Chapter 233: What A Joke!
Christopher was flabbergasted after he heard Nathan.
He didn’t expect that Nathan would defend Sophie.
"Dad, I know you would usually help her. But she almost killed me this time. How could you defend her?"
He retorted.
Nathan was expressionless.
"It’s not all her fault. You must shoulder a portion of the responsibility for this matter."
Christopher was in disbelief when he heard Nathan. "Why should I bear the responsibility for what she has done?"
Nathan was full of anger. "Don’t you remember what you did three years ago?"
Christopher was stunned. "How dare she bring up what happened three years ago?" He thought.
He glanced at Sophie menacingly with his sharp eyes.
"I’ve already explained to you what happened three years ago. This has nothing to do with me."
However, right after he finished saying those words...
*Slap!* A slap landed on his face.
"You beast, how could you refuse to admit your mistake? Let me make it clear today. If you dare to send Sophie to the police station, you will have to step over my dead body!"
Without waiting for Christopher’s response, he escorted Sophie out of the study.
Christopher froze. His face was burning with pain from the slap, but it was far less painful than the pain in his heart.
His father did not believe in him. Instead, he actually believed in an outsider. What a joke!
He clenched his fists so tightly that his nails were buried in his flesh, almost bleeding. After that, he gritted his teeth and turned around coldly. When he was about to chase after them, he was stopped by Uncle Charlie, who had received an order from Nathan.
"Chris, please calm down first."
Uncle Charlie persuaded him.
"Uncle Charlie, get out of the way!"
Christopher bellowed, as mad as a hornet.
"Chris, please don’t make things difficult for me."
Uncle Charlie’s heart ached when he saw the fingerprints on Chris’s face.
Anger surged in Christopher but he couldn’t bear to fight back as Uncle Charlie was an elder. He watched as Nathan took Sophie with him and left the study. Christopher had nowhere to vent his anger, so he kicked the vase in the corner and it instantly shattered into pieces.
Uncle Charlie didn’t dare to stop him. He could only step aside.
Christopher was silent and left the Bateman family’s old mansion angrily.
On the way back, Christopher was glum and silent.
Ever since he was young, his father had always defended Sophie.
Even if his mother quarreled with his father because of this and even threatened to divorce him, he still couldn’t forget Sophie’s mother.
Sometimes, he even wondered if Sophie was his biological daughter.
A child who was born without love would never be loved.
As these thoughts crossed his mind, he clenched his fists tightly and slammed hard on the car window.
Rob was so shocked that he immediately stopped the car by the side of the road.
"Mr. Bateman, are you alright?"
Christopher was silent but he slowly removed his hand from the window.
"Start driving!"
As his vision was blocked, Rob wasn’t able to see if Christopher’s hand was injured.
Instead, he noticed that the window glass was slightly cracked.
Rob couldn’t help but feel pain in his heart. After all, the window was made of bulletproof glass and that showed how hard Christopher punched the window.
Rob didn’t dare to probe any further and he continued driving.
After a while, Christopher calmed down and instructed Rob, "Don’t tell anyone about what happened today, especially Janice."
"Yes."
As soon as Rob finished, his phone rang. He mumbled onto the phone and looked at Christopher in the backseat apologetically. He hesitated before he spoke.
"Mr. Bateman, Sam just called to say that Ms. Gladwell already knew that you went to pick up Nino."
Christopher rubbed his forehead in distress after he heard Rob.
...
Not long after, the car stopped in front of the villa.
Christopher got out of the car. A thought flashed through his mind and he remembered that Janice knew that he had already picked up Nino behind her back. Then, he frowned at the thought of it and walked into the villa.
In the villa, Janice heard the door open as she was about to serve dinner.
As Christopher was entering the house, she quickly put down the plates and walked towards him.
She welcomed him with a smile. "You’re home."
Christopher was changing his shoes. Subconsciously, he placed his hands behind his back when he heard Janice’s voice. Then he looked at her and nodded.
Janice didn’t notice anything unusual about him, so she said, "Okay. Go wash your hands and eat."
Christopher was surprised. He thought that Janice would definitely complain since she knew that he went to pick up Nino. Surprisingly, she didn’t even ask about it. He didn’t expect this to happen.
"What are you waiting for? Come in."
Janice urged him when she saw him, froze in his tracks.
Christopher recovered from his daze and walked towards the dining table. He was surprised when he saw the dinner on the table.
"Didn’t I tell you not to enter the kitchen? Why are you cooking again?" Janice replied, "It’s okay. I just need to be careful. Go wash your hands." Christopher hesitated for a moment before walking to the washroom. However, he stood in front of the sink and didn’t move for a long time. He knew that he couldn’t touch the water since his hand was injured. "What should I do?"
If Janice saw the wound, she would definitely ask about it. He didn’t want Janice to know what had happened today.
But the wound was so obvious, so he was thinking about how to hide it from her. "Why are you so slow? Do you need any help?" Janice’s voice could be heard from outside.
Christopher replied and quickly turned on the tap. He casually washed his hands, opened the door, and walked out.
Janice had already placed the food on his plate. When she saw Christopher, she placed the food in front of his seat.
"Hurry up and eat. I wasn’t home at noon. What did you have for lunch?" Christopher didn’t sleep well yesterday night and he didn’t have lunch at all. In order not to arouse Janice’s suspicions, he replied, "I ate something."
Janice stopped asking, she raised her head, only to find that Christopher hadn’t even picked up his cutleries.
She frowned. "Why aren’t you eating?"
Christopher paused for a moment before slowly raising his left hand.
However, he couldn’t pick up the cutleries with his left hand at all. He tried a few times but he failed and he didn’t want to arouse Janice’s suspicions.
He tried to change the subject, "I want to take a shower first. You eat first." As he spoke, he got up and walked upstairs.
On the other hand, Janice stared at his departing figure and thought that Christopher was acting weirdly today.
She paused for a moment and followed him.
Christopher went into the bedroom. Instead of taking a shower in the bathroom, he took out the first aid kit.
He couldn’t keep hiding. He needed to tend to his wounds before Janice discover them.
With that thought in mind, he opened the first-aid box and took out the ointment.
Just as he was about to tend to his wounds, Janice came in.
By the time he realized it, it was already too late. He didn’t have time to put the first-aid kit away and was caught red-handed by her.
"What happened to your hand?"
Janice immediately rushed over when she saw the injuries on his right hand.
Christopher decided not to hide it anymore since he was discovered by Janice.
He explained, "It’s an accident."
Janice looked at the shocking wound. It didn’t look like an accident, it looked like his hand had suffered from a heavy blow.
Janice knew that Christopher wasn’t telling the truth, but it wasn’t a good time to probe further. She had to tend to his wounds.
So she stopped asking. Instead, she proceeded to spray some disinfectant on the wound.
...
"Does it hurt?"
Her heart ached as she asked.
Christopher shook his head.
Janice went to retrieve the medicine and applied it to his wound before wrapping it with gauze.
After she was done bandaging his hand. She glanced at him and probed. "Tell me honestly, where exactly did you go today?"
Christopher looked away guiltily when he looked at Janice’s serious expression. "I didn’t go anywhere. I only went to the villa by the lake. You know where’s that, right?"
He moved his face to the side.
Inadvertently, Janice noticed a few faint fingerprints on his right cheek.
At this point, she knew what had happened.
Who would dare to slap Christopher?
Who else could it be other than his family?
There was probably only one person in his family who would do such a thing.
She knew who it could be.
But she tried her best to hold back, pretending that she didn’t notice it and changed the subject.
"If you really want to regain your memory, I’ll stay by your side. Shall we pick up Nino after that?"
Christopher nodded. He was very grateful that she didn’t continue probing. If she did, he really didn’t know how to answer.
With that thought in mind, he reached out to hug her and buried his face in her neck.
He loved to hold her in his arms. It warmed his soul.
"It’s great to have you."
He said.
Janice was silent and allowed him to hug her.
She knew that something must’ve happened to Christopher.
She didn’t know what it was, but she had a vague feeling that it must have
something to do with her.
Thinking of this, she reached out and gently stroked the back of his head to comfort him.
"Come, let’s go down and eat."
It wasn’t until he felt the hunger wash over him that Janice let him go.
Christopher nodded and followed her downstairs.
Since his hand was injured, Janice fed him.
She held the spoon and carefully fed him as though she was feeding a baby.
But when she saw him eating obediently, she couldn’t but tease him.
"When our child is born in the future, you’ll be the big baby, and he’ll be the small baby. The two of you will sit in a row. I’ll feed him and you one mouthful at a time, and both of you will be my babies, okay?"
Christopher almost choked himself when he heard her.
"No, you’re the only baby. You’re my only treasure."
"What about our baby? If our baby hears this, he’ll be jealous," Janice said as she blinked.
Christopher smiled and said, "Our baby will be loved by his grandma and grandpa. It’s alright if I don’t dote on him."
"No, you have to love our baby more. I’m an adult. I can take care of myself."
"But I only have one baby in my heart."
Christopher said with a serious expression.
Janice thought for a moment, then said.
"Then try your best to fit both of us in your heart." As she spoke, she patted her stomach. Christopher couldn’t help but laugh.
Janice felt better when she saw him laughing.
The next morning, Janice went to the lakeside apartment.
When she left, Christopher was still asleep.
She purposely went there while he was asleep.
She had to find out what happened yesterday. She couldn’t allow him to be slapped for nothing.
She went there early to meet Rob.
Sure enough, she saw Rob at Sam’s house as expected.
"Rob, long time no see."
Rob nodded at her. He realized that they met each other not too long ago.
